, How is everyone finding Izu's latest body of work? Pains me to say it but I haven't enjoyed anything of his for a long time. While the flesh eater and ningyo sculpts were fantastic, I feel these days he pumps out way too much content with a lot less thought behind them. I mean I don't know, a lot of just seems contrived to me honestly i.e. more rotting zombies, Mazinger inspired breastplates, Mickey Mouse stuff, boxers which somewhat look like a Leeetoy outing, continued Nazi collaborations with Tan etc etc.
i genuinely enjoy his current style of painting and cutting holes into the vinyl. his current line up of small, zollmen inspired sculpts is so much better for my shelves than half the shit out there rn. good swasticker or not i wish it wasnt on the bot because i really like the zombie head underneath.
The Hitler shit I can totally do without. The OG use of the swastika I can look past because it’s still so prevalent in Japanese architecture, and their culture, and I genuinely don’t believe it’s used on these toys to be provocative. He’s already done that bullshit Hitler head, what would stop him from using a nazi swazi anywhere else? Plus, Zollmen gets zero contention for their use of it. His Toxi and Flesh Eaters stay with me as staple favorites, as does the Ningyo. The Irezumi pair doesn’t do much for me, but I do love when he puts the geisha head on the Ningyo body. Frankenstein and Skullman are fuckin’ great, and I love the textures and posture. The missing chunk in the ribs is an awesome, little detail. Can’t say the animal shit does anything for me, but I do like the little traditional boxer dude. As for his paintwork, I can unapologetically exclaim I love everything he touches. Even his early paints where he didn’t quite know what he was doing are minimalistically bad, but carry a lot of charm. He’s got a pretty unique take and signature to his paints, and I think he’s assigned them well to fit any of his toys he paints.
Whilst I personally have veered away from his sculpts, I can agree with you on his painting. In particular his kinda melted neapolitian pastel ice cream paint jobs are always impressive.
I'm a pretty big fan of everything he puts out, except the hitler head. I wish he didn't do that Hitler head. Kind of weird. That Kaiju Tan stuff already had a nazi feel to it. His paints can be pretty amazing. I've got a couple pieces that I find truly stunning. The ningyo is of course amazing. I really love that frakenstein zombie guy(looking for one). I've got both porcelain pieces and I think they look great in a different material. He has been putting out a lot of toys. Too many. Unless I could keep up, Outside of going to shows in Asia or paying crazy yj prices, his stuff is really hard to get.
How is he selling most of his stuff anyway outside the US? All I've really seen is colab stuff and the porcelain pre-orders. I realy dig the marbled zombie things he put out but I think that was put out on his "fuckflippers" account that he hasn't allowed me in, heh
Looks like he's just been doing a bunch of shows lately. I really dug the group show with Dehara at Angel Abby actually. Quite an interesting pairing.
I've been looking for those zombie creatures. I love the look of them. I didn't see anything on the fuck flippers account. I don't know how anyone scores his work outside of Asia. I also liked a lot of the toys from the Angel Abby show with Dehara. Crazy funny sculpts with penis' everywhere. Should probably post some of those in fuggliest toys. Toy wieners are always a winner on that thread. Most of his paint apps I really like but I saw the pieces he painted for planet asia for the vintage vinyl show and they looked like metallic puke. But it could just be the planet asia sculpts.
he hasnt posted anything but i am gonna get to the bottom of this asap. his zombies are up there in me wants
Those fuckers are a I FART A LOT to find too. I've been hunting for one since they came out and came up bone dry.
Yeah I've been on the hunt for a while as well. Plus that marble looks great. Last year he was at snatchpunch but I haven't seen anything
With this thread coming back to the forefront I figured I could give the two I own some new light/shooting/editing treatment! I was fortunate enough to get the Pogo tribute from Izumo himself at NYCC 2014, and the blue(third painted release) was sold to me by a friend for its original $120 retail. No idea what retail on these are now, but given his quickly climbed status I’m very appreciative of owning this pair! Spoiler Spoiler
I have never been a fan of Izu's work but these two.... a fresh breathe of shock to me. They are absolutely incredible.
These are really nice. The colors on both of them are on point. I stopped collecting this guy the second the hitler love fest began, same with all the others. Last time I checked, buying contemporary nazi things is supporting contemporary nazi things.
Not a fan of everything he puts out myself, but those two are incredible. I am fond of his Hedorah sculpt. I view it as a nice and subtle update to the original Bullmark. Yeah, I don't understand the desire to appropriate Nazi figures or symbols into anything. I can't say I feel personally offended by those toys, but I don't blame others who are. Regardless, I don't want anything like that sitting on my shelves.
That Devilman is insanely wicked. I really like the stoic stance of its body, while the expression on the face is very intense. The textures are so, so good! Hope to see the back and the wings soon! I only have one BGT figure out of the four I’ve owned, sadly. But I do cherish my Pogo Flesh Eater.
Has anyone gotten the squishy mixed parts and compared it to the og is there a noticeable difference in the vinyl.
I know I've been after it for a year.. Really looking for the black gold and red one.. It's huge and articulated like crazy.
