@The Moog And I’d say that’s a fair assessment! Flip side of the coin, though, there’s lots of artists that people respect that I think release some pretty bad stuff. It’s all so subjective, as constantly stated. But that’s the beauty of this thread, in my opinion. You can bring Siccaluna here and have my defense, but if someone brought in, say, Bear Model or a cool squeaker you’d most likely feel compelled to present counterpoints! Fortunately, I think people have more sense than to bring Bear Model here. 8)

Haha, absolutely. I think I'm pretty safe considering BM's release rate. Most toys that feature in this thread are new release, or fairly recent.

I suppose I just selfishly come here to vent and publicly show annoyance. How new release 'sofubi' is steadily climbing in price to match highly sought after and rare vintage pieces is baffling to me.

@The Moog What’s a discussion board without content for discussion? I’ve heard your sentiment from both many a collector and artist. It’s, in my opinion, an unfortunate step, but one that’s come from the mass exposure to the hobby of sofubi collecting by way of social media. Aspects of sofubi collecting has become pretty similar to streetwear and sneakerhead subcultures, in my eyes, which is both good and bad. I have my gripes, but it’s not like bein’ consistently annoyed by it will do me any good. Bounty Hunter, Obake Dogs, fight figures, vintage pachi; these are things that stay pretty under the radar for the most part. And I’m happy to continue searching and collecting those, while maintaining what little I can with current makers like Splurrt, Paul Kaiju, Shirahama, Spectrum Lab, Headlock, etc!

I totally concur with @The Moog

This is the 'Fugliest Toy' thread . . . not a 'Free pass because he's a nice/good/paid-his-dues kinda guy' thread.

@Anti Social Andy It’s not so much that I’m giving Siccaluna a pass, rather that it’s more acceptable/understandable by my standard for an established artist to be able to test the waters of increased prices on somethin’ more experimental with their toys. He hasn’t increased the price of his standard figures by hundreds, which i find admirable. It’s that versus, again, some newjack nobody comin’ out the gate with a $500+ figure that’s got no known background or establishment and has all the design elements of contrived, low hangin’ fruit. The fugliness opinion of Siccaluna’s mashups isn’t an issue to me; again, that’s subjective. I’m really just speakin’ on the price aspect. Would I buy it for that much? Shit no. Do I think Miyazawa - San has earned/deserves it if someone does? Absolutely.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- Kaws might’ve had some street cred years ago; but he’s been phoning it in for at least the last 10 years and people keep lapping it up. He’s “the Simpsons” of street art.

Haha I saw this and thought some hack Kaws bootlegger like FlabSlab just made a Picachoo toy and put Kaws Xs on it for comedic sake. Had no idea it was legit until you said this. It is so stupid. I’ll wait for the Kaws Mewtwo.

Yep. It wasn't clear whether this release is officially Kaws or some bootleg type deal, but either way its fucking boring. Like the Snoopy shit, or the Sesame Street shit. I assume it wont end until every famous character has had X's slapped on its eyes ... much like Ron English and his godawful 'grin' shite.

either scenario- bootleg or official kaws is equally likely and equally boring.

I guess that is the state I’d Kaws work, a bootlegger can design something in his style and its indistinguishable from an official product.

I know it's been said a million times but, just because you can doesn't mean you should.
