Just wait til all the popular toy artists start sticking those cheap ass Apple Air Tags inside their toys so they can see if it ever leaves your house!

I mean there are already artists asking for a driver's license with a threat of a lawsuit for re-selling, so why not a tracking chip?

"By entering this lotto you do hereby agree to have the location and movement of this toy tracked in perpetuity. If you move you must fill out Sofubi Location Transition Form 87-9B for approval. Est. processing time of said form is 12-16 weeks. If found in violation of the agreement a remote detonator will be triggered. We are not responsible for any injury or property damage from the result of any sofubi-related actions"

The whole NFT on a blockchain to verify authenticity is stupid. The creator could just as easily create a database to confirm ownership/authenticity. it doesn’t have to be on a blockchain. The whole idea of putting it on a blockchain is just to add a bunch of hype and use current technology to make things more “futuristic.”

That shows a fundamental lack of understanding as to how the whole concept of the blockchain works. It's automation of tracking. Your system requires the artist to update it manually and allows users to opt into it, letting them break the chain of custody by simply not reporting it. It puts the onus of responsibility on the artist and the buying fan to verify authenticity and manage the system for every single transaction that occurs in the aftermarket, by hand, including multiple overseas fans introducing language barriers too.

A blockchain automates that entire process. The aftermarket becomes effectively bootleg-proof if you simply demand the NFT with it as a buyer. That also makes ownership transfer visible, so you can find flippers. It's secure (generally) automated transfer of verified data.

If an artist wants to curate their community a bit, eliminate possible flippers, provide authenticity and limit bootlegging opportunities, they can use NFTs to do so. It's not a bulletproof solution, but it provides transparency where currently there is not. There isn't a good answer that pleases all your possible buyers if you're hype, so ultimately artists should just do what makes them most comfortable instead of listening to a bunch of whining, petulant man-children you can never please.

You can attack the situation that NFT finds itself; hype to such an extent you can NFT dog shit and make a few bucks, but that doesn't make blockchain a viable option depending on what an artist wants to do. But the great thing about NFTs is if you don't give a shit just don't participate; it's entirely voluntary.

But even then, what's the problem? Beeple is now a multi-millionaire that is in full control of his own destiny. If you want the image but don't care about the NFT, just use the high res image he provides. If you can't afford the NFT aftermarket you have chances to buy larger runs, lottos, etc. And if you can afford the aftermarket and are willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for the bragging rights to an image without the copyright, then go right on ahead. Hell, some fans who got NFTs for a dollar sold for tens of thousands and paid off medical bills.

As far as I'm concerned, what people like Beeple are doing is the greatest artist "fuck you" to the 1% they can. "We're going to take all the money you will throw at us so you can have gloating rights to a fucking JPG". Even if you hate NFTs you should love NFTs because they'll help more people than they theoretically hurt, which ultimately just the 1 final person holding the bag.

But I guess those parts of NFTs you can ignore to make the same tired and lazy point as everyone else.

Despite my wariness of tech-bro hype, everything Chris said is true and NFTs could be pretty cool in a while.

I still like the old 'keep your damn headers' route, but for someone working in tech I'm bizarrely conservative about the whole thing.

Aren't NFTs and Bitcoin and the like extremely energy intensive? I believe that the long-term ecological cost is extremely harmful and I don't subscribe to the notion that "they'll help more people than they theoretically hurt" from that angle.
But hey, I buy vinyl toys that are shipped to me from Japan and will melt in a few decades anyways, so I'm not sure I have much of an ethical ledge to stand on anyways.

    comparative to what though?

I recently re-financed so let's compare an NFT of the deed of my home vs. what I recently had to go through. The energy usage of the deed to my home NFT would have to be measured against hundreds of energy sources in the transaction used to process my deed the traditional way.
The main problem with the blanket "blockchains use so much energy" is simply because it is easily quantifiable and what it would replace is not, and if it was we'd be having a talk about how much energy could be saved moving to a proof of stake transaction processing model

I will not deny that unless you are living in some sort of technocratic utopia, the dream world scenarios people envision with blockchains is a bit...sadly optimistic. But the thing is it is important we have that very frank, honest, and fact-driven conversation in the dialog. We're talking horse-to-car technical transition here

I remember when these were just toys we collected. Not “art”, just toys... I miss those days.

Any time I see the point brought up about NFTs and crypto mining being energy intensive and bad for the environment, they never hold it up to anything else. Show me how much energy NFTs burn every day compared to something like Candy Crush. Or posting a meme on Instagram. Or keeping Skullbrain running.

I appreciate the conversation that can and has been had about “toy vs art”, but I feel like it’s gotten pushed WAY too on the side of art with the hype and prices of certain toys(eastern and western), and not for what I’d consider any justifiable reason. When artists can elevate themselves to the place of galleries and provide gallery work that separates themselves from their toy work, like TKOM and his big ass sculptures, and even Kaws(though I can’t stand anything he does), I see the distinction. But people hoarding and holding Kaws 5YL’s and certain Be@rbricks to highbrow art standards because Ronnie Feig and Ben Baller collect them is...weird. And gross.

I like to think that deep in the bowels of middle earth forests are being raised by orcs and goblins to keep the evil machine that is Skullbrain running. I’m an optimist.

I have been wondering for couple of weeks about the carbon footprint of this hobby. Raw material is fossil fuel, then casting it requires energy, then plastic bag and header; then shipping...

The energy use of bitcoin is concerning and valid but also probably overblown. How much energy is consumed via cloud computing centers so people can upload their 1000th photo of their grandchild to facebook? Also with regulation, social pressure and time, bitcoin mining will either move entirely to renewable energy (which has an environmental cost as well) or potentially be replaced by another cryptocurrency. The current shift in hashrate from China to other countries is already a move to renewables, in part.

Ethereum is moving to proof of stake rather than proof of work consensus mechanism, which translates into a minute fraction of the energy use of bitcoin. Many prominent cryptocurrencies currently existing and/or in development that are worth a shit (read: not dogecoin) utilize proof of stake.

So to conflate the energy use of bitcoin with other cryptocurrencies besides older proof of work blockchains is inaccurate. A lot of folks in the media do this.

Blockchain and cryptocurrencies are the future, but the whole market is still a highly manipulated gamblers paradise right now, even though there is much more infrastructure and liquidity than the 2017 bubble. It will end badly, again, and then go higher during the next bull cycle.

Also bitcoin to the moon, lambo lyfe, etc, etc

Y’all drop the “this is horses to cars change!” Line and almost in the same breadth forget to acknowledge how much more damage a technological advancement such as cars has damaged the world in comparison to its previous iteration.

The brad troemel report on nfts is a good starting point on how y’all are playing yourselves. High art or not
