Hope this isn't too morbid to ask, but it'll happen to us all when we eventually leave planet earth! Just wondering what you have planned for your toys in the end. Sell them before you go? Give them away? Deed them in a will? Find a museum (are there any that have Kaiju collections?), do nothing and eventually have them end up in a trash landfill? Inquiring minds want to know, especially if you have no family (immediate and/or distant).

For those who have large and most likely toys of considerable value, it can be a serious thing to think about. I'm sure us older collectors have thought of it at some point. Hoping to hear your thoughts! :)

    Intentions (for now)

    * Tiger 7 with gloves and backer card goes to @Alebrije (Roger), for his great love of Tigers, and I did promise him one, a long time ago.

*Tiger 7 of choice (aside from the gloved one), orange or yellow head, goes to @ultrakaiju (Stevie!), because I promised him one a long time ago!

    * Red Moguera Toygraph Racer and any other Racers I have that he needs to complete his collection, goes to @Mr Fox (Simon), because he loves those Racers with a passion, just as I do.

*Entire Buta collection is still undecided, but if something happens before I can decide how to distribute them, I would respectfully ask that @akum6n (Daniel) be the custodian. He was the first person who welcomed me into the world of Kaiju. On my first visit to Super 7, I must've looked dazed, and he kindly introduced himself and we started talking toys (l'll never forget his kindness). I would like the butas to stay as an intact group please. If the collection needs to be transferred, I trust in his judgement to find the group a new home in the USA or Japan.

I'm planing to give some to my daughter, and she can sell them or keep the archive going. I'm thinking specifically of my own designs. I don't think I would want to burden her with dealing with my entire collection:)

It may be a bit morbid to reply with, but I’ve got it in my bones I’ll be gone before the missus and maybe even my parents. So I’ve requested she sell ‘em all and distribute funds between her and my parents. I’ve also contemplated sending certain toys back to their respective artist origins, and maybe some important ones to close friends.

This is really an interesting topic to bring up here, Grace. It's something I've thought about a lot through the years actually. Particularly as we've sadly mourned the passing of some great members on here. I know the question is posed in an almost speculative or existentialist form, but actually, I have considered that we could use s specific method on the forum to sort of describe our desires. Not saying everyone (or anyone) would need to put down anything binding here, but if there was any way we could offer assistance to our loved ones after passing it could be appreciated. I am making a [very broad] generalisation here, but it's safe to say that for a good number of people, they might have little to no understanding of these silly vinyl dollies people have spent decades (and sadly, oodles of money) adopting from around the world. People are obviously free to do with as they see fit, but I am sure most of us agree it would be nicer to have stuff not just end up in a landfill or charity shop (though at least the latter might bring joy to some random people, and could even spark new collectors). The sheer volume sometimes can be a really daunting challenge for people to take on, even if they have even a cursory knowledge, but especially being on the outside. This goes for anything, not just our silly toy collections. Anyways, early morning rant, but just because you've sparked something that has entered my mind quite a bit over my collecting life. I'll leave it there, but it's definitely not an easy question.

You can't take it with you*, and my desire would be to that my toys continue to give joy to someone, in some form. In the same way that a good portion of them came to me through someone else (even if, or maybe especially when, it was a Japanese kid). They made me happy and got me through some very tough stuff; it would be amazing if they could go on to continue to have a life and influence on others out there. And maybe even spark that initial curiosity which grows into love for kaiju, tokusatsu, the legendary Tsuburaya/Toho, or just toys in general. Even just a small seed that causes someone to think, and maybe look into one of these things - doesn't have to be soft vinyl collecting - is basically missing accomplished.

*Well, to be fair, depending on your own belief system perhaps you can.

I'm glad to see the responses so far, thank you guys for chiming in! Thank you Stevie for your thoughts and idea of at least documenting our intentions in some way here! :) I think it's a good one! Especially if we haven't gotten around to making a will. Having something written here will at least give some clue for how the toys could be distributed!

Personally, I'm not a spring chicken, and seeing the toys (at least what made it to the shelves so far!) everyday, if only glimpses, as I dash out the door, makes me happy . Stevie, I feel the same way. I've collected toys both in good and challenging times, and they're reminders that there is happiness in times of darkness. As trivial as it may sound, they keep you going, they're reminders that the child lives on in all of us.

I'm the last in my known family line. I'd love to see the Buta collection stay intact, as well as the Tigers and Racers. I can't see selling them yet, and would like to see them until I check out. Don't have many close friends, and none of them know about Kaiju toys. I did tell one of my closest friend, not to let them go to a thrift store! :D He has some inkling that they cost more than a dime :lol:. So, I'm struggling with what to do. I would like them to continue to make others happy, long after I've gone. Pondering, pondering, pondering!

P.S. Please note that none of my toys are for sale! I'm still enjoying them, and I'm NOT dead yet!

Another point I've considered - and please, I am not quite there yet, so don't flood me with PMs just yet - is that I might like to enjoy seeing some of the happiness these silly toys can bring to others (while I still can), that is their base intent after all, so I might one day consider just massive purging to other members of the community on here, so that my collection can live on in other people's enjoyment. If/when that will happen is something for down the line, but the important question about plans for an unexpected event still stands.

And yeah, for the other bit, I've got a fairly good mental list of who might enjoy some of the stuff I've collected for the years, folks I've had good conversations with and appreciated as friends and fans in this community. But it is just mental right now, which probably is a lot of the challenge for figuring stuff out to someone else.

Yup!!! Just added my "P.S." codicil too!

P.P.S. I miss Lixx/Chris in all of his grumpiness glory. He would've definitely gotten a Tiger.

Having helped clear out my late Mother-in-Law's home a couple of years back, I wouldn't wish the burden of disposing of all my crap on anyone, let alone my wife and kids.

Other than the few toys I've had a hand in, most of my collection is largely meaningless to them and whilst I admire your philanthropic approach to distribution, as a more pragmatic Yorkshireman, despite still picking up new stuff that appeals (slim pickings these days), I've already started selling off sub-collections and will probably continue in the same vein, ideally until I'm down to a core collection, probably of fight-figures, the genre that pulled me into this madness to start with.

That would at least be more manageable to archive for sales purposes, either en masse or individually.

All my toys will become grave goods and will be buried with me, so I will need to be buried in something the size of a skip or dumpster.

Thank you Andy! I agree, it's a lot of work distributing toys. I've only listed a few promises I'd like to keep (no intention of listing every single toy) , and at least a fallback plan for the butas. The rest are still going to be a quandry. Not ready to sell off anything yet

p.s. @The Moog , an archeologist is gonna have a conniption one day, when he digs you up a thousand years from now!

Have you seen the cost of skip hire these days?

How about semtex in the first course of brickwork to bring the entire house down on you, your collection and everything else instead?

Just spit balling ideas, happy to help!

But seriously, having no children I would probably leave the books/graphic novels to my eldest nephew, because he loves reading. The toys/manga would go to my youngest nephew because he loves everything Japanese, and he's the only one that has shown any genuine interest in my toys.

Whether either of them would have enough room to store it all is admittedly a problem!

I have to admit, I've come close to the big dive, but when I pick up a toy, my gut says "no way! not yet!" I suppose the embrace will eventually come, but not yet (it won't matter if I get hit by a bus tomorrow, it'll all end up in a rubbish yard! :))

If I’m aware I’m dying, I’d sell them all myself except for a few special pieces that my sister might want to remember me by. (Assuming she’s alive, of course.)
If I kick the bucket randomly my relatives will be here begging someone to help them sell it all.
There will be no kids here either, actually looking into getting sterilized soon. My sis is probably not having any kids too.

I'm never confident in long term stability. I'm definitely one of the type that feels it could all come crashing down with one bad turn of luck, so any thoughts I have on this now could change in a second. The way I like to see it going, if it's a situation where I can see the end coming, is that I slowly sell off everything other than the core collection. It feels like that should stay together, for a few reasons. I'd like to arrange it all into a couple of semi-weatherproof containers and leave them up in the woods on the hill behind my house, which isn't exactly easy to navigate and probably would remain out there for a while. I'd hope the next person to find it would be at least a little confused and charmed by the whole thing. This is kind of a pipe dream/kid's type of idea, easy enough to do but I'm sure it sounds better on paper.

There is a "toy museum" housed within a large antique/flea market complex in Quechee VT (@ungawa222 has to be well acquainted with that?), which is someone's massive personal collection on display. I kind of like the idea of donating Zazahn stuff there, too. Providing that guy lives longer than I do and the "museum" sticks around. I love the idea of an unexplainable sub-collection collecting dust at a side attraction inside an antique barn.

The whole thing will most likely end up donated to someone as a lot, though, if I can manage it.

@Anti Social Andy the situation you describe w/ your mother-in-law is something I'm getting really anxious about concerning my stepdad (and my own mother). They're getting up there in years, and have always been one notch shy of hoarding. So much paper. Newspapers, old documents, stacks and stacks of cookbooks, piled into corners. Everywhere. My stepfather has even made it into a joke—"you and your sister will have to deal with this stuff, I'm not getting rid of anything". They are semi-rural, so I'm wondering if a looong managed bonfire is the way to go when the time comes.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of the clearing was cathartic and helped bring closure to the family. In later life she went the same way and got great pleasure 'bargain-hunting' at all the local charity shops and had piles of scarves, wooden ducks, costume jewellery, old books and a whole bunch of randomness. We all wore one of her crazy scarves to the funeral and once the wake dwindled to her immediate family, they broke out the sherry and allocated and shared out some of her 'treasures'. It made a bad day into a good day, reminiscing about her antics, remembering her fondly and laughing at the craziness!

There was a whole ton of 'less fun' stuff to get through after that . . . but again, it kept the family distracted and too busy to dwell.

I think creating a spreadsheet with pictures, names, and "value ranges" for each toy is important if someone were tasked with selling it should we die. I know my wife has no idea about the names of any of my toys and would not know where to start.

I agree. I think people outside of collectors think you can buy these toys for $10 at Target. I would hate for my collection to be given to goodwill along with old dishes and kitchen stuff.

There was a thread discussing this in some depth earlier in the year. From memory, there was an app that seems ideal for this task.

It's on the Winter 'To-do' list.

It does seem like a lot of work! As I get older, for me, I'd rather enjoy the toys, not spend time tracking them, this is said from the standpoint that there won't be anyone to redistribute the toys afterwards. I gave up on a detailed toy ledger 2 years ago, life is short. But, some love tracking the details, and it does give your survivors direction on what to do. I remember Lixx was keeping a detailed database of his toys. I hope his family is enjoying his collection, he had fabulous taste in vintage and modern, and imho, he had one of the best collections I know of.

Andy's idea of purging and keeping a core is sounding more logical. It's just hard to let go! :x
