Thought I'd start a new topic so proud pet parents can keep track of their family :)

After Henry passed in May, Emma and I were left with a big hole in our hearts (a 24 lb hole). We adopted Odin, and as sweet as the little guy (13 lbs) is, he has too much energy for Emma (pounces and play-attacks her constantly ). After searching and monitoring everyday on Petfinder, Adopt-A-Pet, FB, and IG, we finally found a Love Bug for Emma. He's even bigger than Henry!

Introducing Hubs (or Hubbee :)). He is 25 pounds of total love! The adoption description sheet said, "Big Love Beast". Oddly, he seems smaller than Henry, and I think it's because Henry was mostly muscle and Hubbee is mostly fat . He was posted on IG as an urgent case in Los Angeles. A family of 4 cats was surrendered to the LA Animal Services. They'd been there since the beginning of November. Unfortunately an elderly gentleman could no longer care for them, so his son brought them in. I'm sure it must have been heart breaking for the original owner . They are ALL very well socialized and total love bugs. Being at the shelter is tough, all of them caught upper respiratory infections (very common when many animals are crowded together in close quarters). One of the girl kittees also had diabetes, and it seems she lost the will to live, so sadly she was euthanized. It was a complete drama for me to adopt Hubbee. Since it was posted on IG, I thought for sure there would be others interested in him. After multiple phone calls to the shelter and multiple changes to the adoption availability date (they had to send a formal letter to the owner for final notification, before the kittees on hold could be considered for open adoption. The letter got mis-mailed a couple of times!) it was finally announced he was available for adoption on 11/21/19 at 8:00 am. I was really worried he'd be snatched up, so I had to, umm, "invent" an excuse to leave work in mid-week. I left at 2 pm on 11/20, made the 6 hr drive to LA, and was first in line for him at 8:00 am! Poor guy was huddled in the back of his cage (very dirty, poor thing) and literally trembling with fear and confusion :(. Well, they pulled him out of the cage and transferred him into my carrier. I made the long 6 hr drive back, and played soft soothing music to calm him. We stopped at a Pet Food Express near home, and I had to bathe him, he was really stinky and dirty. It took 4 soapings and rinsings until he was decently cleaned. He did NOT bite or scratch me, but struggled a lot. What a good boy! :D Here is a pic when we arrived home -- keep in mind that this is a DOG crate! He was somewhat dazed from the bath, but by the time we got him out, he was purring and head-butting us. He's still adjusting to living in the living room. Emma and Odin are wondering why they aren't allowed on the comfy sofas! Wish us luck, it'll take about a month to slowly introduce the kittees, before they get a full look at each other. Hopefully Emma and Hubs will become best friends, she sorely needs another calm love bug to snuggle and nap with :D. More pics to follow, once he's adjusted.

p.s. the photo doesn't do justice to his handsomeness. He's a bit dazed after an extended Oatmeal and Pear bath ;)

p.p.s. This is Emma sleeping alone on the couch (she takes up a whole corner!). Hopefully Hubs will join her shortly

Unfortunately, yesterday we had to put our husky down because he was starting to suffer from a chronic illness. I am so sad today..

    Goodbye Bode, my sweet direwolf..

You lived a long, fun-filled, adventurous life and now it is time to rest. We love you with all of our everything and we know that you loved us right back. We will never forget you and we are sorry that your last couple years were rough but alas, your suffering is now over.

We will miss you dearly and our hearts will hurt every time we think of you. Thank you for all of the great times and thank you for teaching us how to love unconditionally.

Rest easy, old wolf, you are not in pain anymore..

Bode got to spend his last day rolling in the snow, playing in the creek and eating lots of people food. He passed quietly at home on his bed with Gena and I right by his side, while giving him lots of love and kisses.

Welcome Hubs! @Mr. Humphreys That is such a great story, and I am deeply appreciative of the efforts (and costs, which are always heavy with adopting a new pet, especially from a shelter) you went through to give this guy a home. Luckily I know it will carry one to be such a great one with you and Emma as companions. Big nonchalant kitteh hugs to the new guy, may he enjoy many happy years in the new home, and also find as much mystery and awe of your toy collection as we all do.

Noel, I am so sorry to hear that. While I am sure the decision was for the best, and only made as a final resort, I know that it also doesn't mean it is any easier. Losing a lifelong companion like this is something we never get used to, and never move on from. May his memories continue to follow you throughout your life, and bring you thoughts of joy and comfort for times when you need it. Sorry, getting all emotional just writing this. Big hairy dog hugs my friend.

Thank you Doug and Stevie for your very sweet words :). Hubs had his big vet day on Sunday. He got injections for the URI and wormies, and his ears were just caked on the inside with dark brown goo. No sign of mites, just a lot of yuckiness. Multiple washing and swabbing cleaned out most of it, but he might have to go in for a second cleaning. The antibiotic injection for his URI, should also help with ear bacteria. Still waiting for the blood work results to come back in. Need to bring him back for a urine test (they weren't able to collect a sample ). He's doing MUCH better today. His runny nose finally stopped, and his eyes are clearing up and not crusting. He's ventured out on the couches and less time hiding under the couch and tables. He's a big faaaaaattie! :) He has some difficulty walking about. Not sure if it's because he's so lardy or he's still recovering his general health. He seems in much better spirits too, lots of deep low purring and no more frightened looks. Emma and Odin are still upset at not being allowed on the comfy sofas, and they know that there is another cat in the house . So far so good. Hopefully he will stay out in the open (not hiding) more, so I can snap a decent photo of him.

@noeleaser Noel, I am deeply sorry for your loss. I'm sure he was very happy to have you as his parents, and no doubt you showered him with lots of love, care, and great times. Losing my Henry this year re-opens that deep sadness. It really never leaves you, but over time, you start to remember more of the good times you had together. Our lives are made so much richer by our furry kids, but oh so sad and difficult when they do leave us. You made the right decision in ending his suffering (Henry was the same). So many parents try to hang on just to keep them around, but when they suffer, it's important to keep the welfare of the furries first, when making such a difficult decision. Bode's last day sounded so nice. I'm sure he was very grateful to be part of your family. Sincerest condolences . When you're ready, don't forget there are many needy dogs and cats (and other animals!) out there, desperately looking for good homes. Furry hugs sent your way.

@ultrakaiju I was all set to start unpacking all the buta and start stacking shelves (my friend assembled another case, and converted a bookcase into a beautiful toy case (he refinished, painted, and added heavy acrylic panels (to keep the fangs and claws away) with little crystal knob pulls, for each compartment (sort of like a legal bookcase). Hopefully I can work on some of that this weekend. Hubs seems pretty mellow, and not too likely he will pounce on toys. He might still try to chew them though!

Hubbee is settling in nicely, but he's a rough beast of sorts and likes to scratch things. Unfortunately, that means the couch :x. To remedy this, we ran down to Costco and bought lots of towels! The bright side of the coin now means I can pretend to be like JLo and have white furniture :). A bit ghetto, but the kittees like the extra cushiness.
Never knew that cats can look like giant chocolate truffles!
Odin is desperate to play with him, yet he's a bit intimidated and keeps 2 feet of separation. Fortunately Hubbee doesn't mind the extra "shadow". Emma won't let him come anywhere near her! :?

Hope everyone is enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday! :)
p.s. blood work came back clean, fiv/felv negative, nose is dry, eyes are clean and no more weeping, all the brown crud has been cleaned out of the ears. Looks like we just need to work on lardo reduction and socialization :D

Wanted to share with y’all about Nikki. She was such a special friend and a part of me and a good sport when it came to raffle games. I miss her so much and just imagine her spirit out there flying everywhere she couldn’t in life. I’m glad y’all were able to experience her spunky little personality along with me and the joy she brought with.

I would love to see a Half Moon Conure version of Konatsuya’s Pigora. I wonder if we can make this happen.

    ARISE OLD THREAD!!

So I’m pretty much freaking out right now. A pacman frog Facebook group told me that my frog has a bad infection. I thought he was just pink because he had a warm soak, but I checked him again after they told me. His entire underside was angry pink and I found a few little lesions. Been scurrying around the web making sure I get all the things needed.
If I treat with antibiotics he might have a 50/50 chance.
Sorry, just have to vent. I really don’t want to lose him.

Miraculously he is looking SO much better today. He still has open sores on his legs and every toe and finger is an angry pink, but the overall belly color isn’t anywhere close to what I saw yesterday.
He’s in a “hospital setup” (just damp paper towels). Antibiotics are coming in tomorrow. Prognosis lifted to 80% survival rate already, which is such a relief. I have to watch and see what happens to these little open wounds though, if they get larger then that’s a big problem. Hoping he can pull through.

Sprout survived the infection but refuses to eat. I think he may still be feeling a bit ill, but it’s been almost three months since he’s accepted food so I’m very worried. I’m probably going to have to try feeding a rodent, which I promised myself I’d never do again. :? It was a really gross experience. Thing is, no frog can resist one.

Thanks for the update Maddie! Too bad you aren't in San Francisco. Our Church has an abandoned school building, and the rodent problem is worse! We could use him for rodent control! I think you are going to have to feed him what he wants. Just turn the other way! ;) Let us know how he's coming along. He's a cutie! :dam:

My wife and I just adopted a doggo about 3 weeks ago! I promised her a dog in my wedding vows back in October since she's been asking for a dog forever...so here we are! Dog's name is Hannah Lily and she was waiting in the shelter to be adopted for 525 days!! No one wanted this lazy, chonky, goofball for some reason. She does have a special diet and skin issues but who doesn't! Her hobbies include laying on the couch, sleeping, being a good girl, and looking weird.

This seems really healthy. Maybe the next fad diet to hit New York? At least until our next Bubonic Plague outbreak.

@hellointerloper Good luck with treating your frog. I'm a big fan of that species, I used to have a male that would wake me up at night with his mating call. (this was fixed when I moved him to the other side of the apartment.

My newt is now about 29 years old. I added some plants for it to frolick in. Watch as it frolicks.

It is!! And she gives it up willingly! She has this move where she PLOPS her whole 79 pound body on your feet, we call it the "damsel in distress". She then rotates her body until you rub the complete underside.:lol:

P.S. I hope Sprout is feeling better and eats soon!

Sprout croaked a lot when he hit frog puberty, but has been pretty silent since. He does make a weird squeaky-toy noise when I have to move him though.
That is an incredibly old newt!! What species is your slimy friend, and what’s the lifespan? 29 is pretty surprising!
I’m not too familiar with newts, but in the pacman frog group I’m a part of, it’s become concerning how few people have frogs over 2 years old… whether it’s bad husbandry or bad genetics, I have no idea. Pacs are supposed to live 10-15 years, but they all seem to die young. I consider myself lucky that Sprout is turning 2 in a couple months, seems like I’m doing something right.

    General Sprout update,
Tried to feed him again but he spit it out. Looks like I really do have to buy a rodent on Thursday, he’s not responding to his usual favorites. Was hoping I wouldn’t have to, hah.
Otherwise he looks great. Big, green, and round.

Cynops pyrrhogaster, Japanese Firebelly Newt. I used to have two, both purchased in 1993, but one of them died three years ago. The record is 40 years in captivity. I give it plenty of live ghost shrimp and do frequent water changes.
Back in the 90s when I was working for Reptile & Amphibian magazine and going to shows on a regular basis, there was one breeder I always kept in touch with who told me that the main cause of death he would see in captive frogs was obesity. Not saying this is the case with your guy, but horned frogs are really easy to feed too frequently, and I'm not surprised many out there that are sold through the pet trade die young. The Philippe de Vosjoli book was the best resource out there on them at the time, I'm sure there are other good resources these days, too.
