I think that it would be unsafe to buy an unwrapped one.

That pineapple thing seriously looks like a kids’ rendition of said fruit sculpted out of Play - Doh. If one of my nephews or nieces made that I’d high five ‘em, but this being made by a whole ass adult, on top of being bought for that much plus by more adults, is fuckin’ bananas to me.

As I understand it, the pineapple is a regular motif for him, he produces wooden sculptures, in various sizes, and colours. Quite large, and to be fair, quite striking.

This on the other hand I would wager, is from one of his drinking buddies who knows about sofubi. Probably gave him advice to release limited amounts of the pineapples in 'toy' form and make an absolute killing. They appear to sell out fast. Fans and their money are soon parted ... ;)

Its probably a relatively inexpensive way to own something by him, compared to his big sculptures.

I was going to say that the rough hewn texture of said pineapple was pretty striking. If somebody had a really nice Queen Anne or Georgian staircase it would be interesting to smash off the ornament at the foot and epoxy the vinyl onto the post splinters and all. Might start a fad with the architects and the designers, who knows?

In other news, Marmit's site has updated and he's selling that soldier figure. Name translates as "Gas Mask Soldier", which is what it was originally. It sort of makes me wonder if the other name was just a weird translation error. Because same as before there's no symbols or anything distinct.

In your opinion. Opinions are like arseholes - everybody has one. Boda will continue to be picked on here in this thread, regardless.

The pineapple is such a bummer because I'd be really into it if it was like $45

That was not a translation error. He typed out the word "Nazi" in the same character set used right here. It was not katakana.

Pretty sure the original sculpt for the pineapple was done out of wood using a chainsaw. Doesnt make it any better to me tho.

Not exactly sure what you see ugly in a big, highly detailed, precisely painted figure but whatever. Some people were born without the use of their eyes~

I don't mean on Instagram. I don't know if he put something into Google translate in order to get the English for his post. The name starting as one thing becoming another and then turning back into the first is weird to me

First rule of Fugly Club, never take anything posted on the thread personally. Even some of the actual makers of toys posted here took it better than you ...

IMO, a highly detailed, precisely painted figure is not incapable of being fugly. Most of the best sofubi isn't highly detailed, or precisely painted, that is more the domain of modern production figures or 'Maquettes' as retailers are calling them nowadays.

The excessive detail is hard on the eyes, this one is a prime example of 'Can't stop - Won't stop', (discussed on this thread before). Also, it looks very digital cut and paste, where they've mirror-imaged the left side to the right side. But overall it just looks like a hot mess, where they've tried too hard and didn't know when to stop. Less, really is more sometimes ...

Of course, if you enjoy your toy then more power to you. Who cares what people think on a nerdy chatboard that's been accused of 'gate keeping' in the past. Its just people's opinions, they don't change anything. They'll still keep making big busy looking lumps regardless.

Hey, I collect little girls toys from the 80's and mouldy old rubber squeakers. Do I care what anyone thinks about that? ... Fuck No.

The ~ indicates that I'm joking or at least not being serious. Also when I said "don't pick on boda" I didn't literally mean I want you to delete the post or anything. These are all just ways for me to say "I disagree with your opinion" in a joking sort of way.

I'll make sure to amend an "XD" from now on, so the tone is more obvious.

    XD

Edit: you didn't even mention the dick gun! Sloppy!

    Highly-detailed, precision-crafted shit I couldn’t kick into a burning dumpster fast enough.

I never felt such a visceral urge to just want to chuck entire runs of a toy into a wood-chipper. It’s kind of enjoyable to a point—like watching the trailer for Leprechaun 2 or something.

I get wanting to do something people haven’t seen before. It fails so hard (to me) because theyr’re so highly detailed and banal at the same time.

Here's a question: Is it only mechanical detail that bothers you like that? For example, if it was dense organic detail like scales, hair, wrinkles, etc would It be equally offensive? Do you dislike Shin Godzilla, for example? I've noticed a fair amount of people have this issue with mechanical detail but usually not when its something organic. Maybe because organic details tend to bend better?

I don care for shin godzilla either, but when it comes to hyper-detailed stuff in this new scene, it just comes off gimmicky to me rather than inspired. Scales are details, but it’s not like the scales are the point. This new stuff just strikes me different. It’s all subjective, and the whole vibe sucks to me.

the purple robot thing—2 heads, face in the body, dick part—but instead of organic, it’s mechanical. Not really doing something I haven’t seen done enough. I think there’s an element of “fugly” that concept plays a part in.
