Not a horror mover per say, but the stories in the documentary The Wolfpack certainly detail some real-life horrors. The brothers in the film create simply amazing costumes and scene recreations from any number of classics, too. Don't know if this is the appropriate forum for this, but I started doing a podcast with my buddies. Our thing is mostly watching the movies no one else has time for. My girlfriend HATES all things horror but we went and saw Krampus on Sunday. We both liked it and neither of us thought it was scary at all. It was a fun movie but being that it is PG13 you can see where they really held back on trying to make it a "horror" flick. I don't know your wife, obviously, but if my girlfriend could watch it (and she doesn't even watch commericals for horror movies or scary tv shows) then I am sure your wife could get through it without even a little jump in her seat. For those who haven't seen it, go see it! Its a fun holiday movie for sure! Bring the little ones along as well! Ok, maybe not.
I think she's actually showing some interest in Krampus now, so who knows!! I've missed posting about a bunch of stuff I've watched, but my old-man brain can't recall any of it at the moment. I did catch a rather funny oddity called The Nest from the '80s about a horde of killer cockroaches. Good stuff!
Not a fan of modern horror, but I do dig Rob Zombie flicks. Classic horror all the way, especially pre-1980. Too many to list.
We briefly discussed Larry Cohen a few pages back, so I was happy to see that a couple of his classics were being shown on TCM the other night. Recorded both It's Alive and God Told Me To, and am finishing them up now. It's been a very long time since I'd seen either, and it's funny what you appreciate later in life. Both of them have opening credit sequences that are very simple, yet utterly effective. And the Bernard Herrmann score for It's Alive might be the best thing about the movie.
Finally saw Crimson Peak. It was beautiful but other then that it didn't offer much of anything. My least favorite Del Toro offering so far. Just felt like a predictable timepiece love story with spooky stuff that didn't fit. It was gorgeous though. Devil's Backbone is still my favorite out of all his stuff. Saw that new paranormal activity flick too. More of the same but at least they tried to tie things together with an explanation. Wasn't any better then the others so if you aren't a fan of those don't bother with this one.
Catching some more oldies but goodies of late. Bought the Blu-Ray of Black Christmas, a movie I've wanted to see for at least 25 years. Why I never rented it back in the glory-days of VHS is beyond me. Of course, since the corner video stores disappeared the movie became harder and harder to catch. Arguably the first "slasher" flick, it definitely presents numerous horror tropes that became ubiquitous shortly thereafter. The most audacious move of the film is to not reveal the killer in the end. You can see how Halloween directly or indirectly ripped from this film, and it's also notable for being one of the first flicks to use the "babysitter-and-the-man-upstairs" urban legend. That brought me around to watching When a Stranger Calls Back. Much like the original, the first 20-25 minutes actually freaked the shit out of me. Whoever edited the film ratcheted up the tension so effectively I was white-knuckling it for a bit there. Can see where Scream may have gotten some its inspiration from. Of course, like the original, the movie delves into a boring, melodramatic middle third, but ends on a decently spooky note. Watching Superstition right now, which I don't recall seeing or hearing of back in the day. Nice little haunted house flick with some inventive gore. Plus, you can't beat Billy Jacoby!!
Couple things just became available on Amazon Prime, Bone Tomahawk and Goodnight Mommy. Goodnight Mommy is okay. I think most folks here will have it figured out by the first five minutes. But there is some definite creepiness going on here. Bone Tomahawk was interesting if not overlong. One of my least favorite performances by Richard Jenkins though. Something about it didn't work for me. Boy howdy, that one scene was hard to stomach.
Haven't seen Goodnight Mommy yet, but I did enjoy Bone Tomahawk. To be honest though, I think it is mistakenly being classified as 'horror' by a lot of people. I think it is, at heart, just a western (and the director has said as much). Granted, there were some scenes of a graphic nature, but it is far less so than say, a film like Reservoir Dogs or the like, which no one really classifies as horror. Anyways, I am only bringing this up because it seems a lot of people who are going to see it are expecting it be a horror (though I am not sure what kind) and are thus disappointed after seeing the film. In actuality, I think it is a decent film, there are a lot of areas where it fails to come together, and I too was disappointed with some of the performances, but I do think it deserves a lot of credit for delivering a western, a well-executed production, and getting together what it did for what seems like more of an independent release. I also think it unfortunately, probably because of this, flew under the radar for a lot of folks. Anyhow, while I might not give it an enthusiastic two thumbs up, I think it is worth a watch. But again, leave expectations as to what it is [about] at the door.
BT is certainly not a horror film, but since it'd been discussed in the thread already I thought I'd throw my two cents in.
100% agree that Bone Tomahawk isn't a horror flick but it was ok, Id definitely say its worth watching. I'm a huge horror nut with some of my favorites being Argento films, the older Halloweens and the Evil Dead movies. Finally got around to watching a few that I've been meaning to over the weekend. One being Goodnight Mommy which I thought was ok but did have that scare factor as previously stated! Also watched Babadook which I had watched months ago on my computer but the quality was shit so I rewatched it and I really enjoyed it. Great one to watch home alone with all the lights out if you want a good scare! Lol
Finally saw HEADLESS last night. That movie was so wrong but for whatever reason I couldn't stop watching. Bizarre stuff from beginning to end. I am still a little disturbed today honestly.

I am way too bad at knowing what year stuff was released to make that list. I saw - The Abandoned - finally. It started out really good. Maybe up until the last third of the film I was highly entertained. Spoiler The twist at the end ruined the whole thing for me. It was one step above the horrible cliche it was all a dream kind of ending. I would recommend it just for the first 2/3rds but the end was shit.
That will be fun. Such an odd movie, but so good. Supposedly it'll be double-billed with Phantasm: Ravager, the final installment to the series.
Yeah, Phantasm doesn't have a firm grasp on logic, but man, what a kick! Caught Alice, Sweet Alice yesterday. I could have sworn I'd seen it as a kid, but I guess I was thinking of Don't Look Now because of the yellow raincoats. Great flick, with a thin layer of sleaze, and tons of Catholic contempt going on. I could swear the girl who played Alice was in a ton of other '70s stuff, but apparently she'd only done two or three movies.
I had been wanting to try out shuddertv.com--basically Netflix for horror fans--but wasn't too thrilled about having to watch movies on my computer. Then I found out it's available as an add-on subscription through Amazon, which means I can stream it on my TV! I'm kicking things off with Dead and Buried, one of my favorite movies to rent back in the halcyon days of VHS.
