That is definitely a very cool - if pricey - plastic head. You are absolutely right, I could easily see someone with the skill and creative vision expanding his anesthetic into a full body. That actually makes me think of something else I have always wanted to see: a crazy horror-themed series of characters like this, with swappable heads (and maybe all body parts), similar to the Madballs figures in the 80s, and the way you could snap on/off limbs from MOTU style figures. If I had the time and artistic talent, I would love to make this happen.

thats insanely ridiculous for that plastic head. they were dimestore candy containers, i have two others from this set, they came in a ton of different colors. a few of the heads resemble (if not totally rip off) some of the Ma-Ba zombie sculpts. I'll take some photos of mine later. They are scarce, but not too much to warrant that price.

Yep. A most lovely toy. (And talk about a burst of bidding towards the end of the listing!) Would be fantastic to have one in the collection, but wow. I just love the heavy silver paint application, and of course the sculpt itself is amazing, but it is a heck of an investment for a pachi toy. I would gladly, and very happily, buy these guys up in bundles even without any connection whatsoever to HS (and the history) or the hyped toy world; just because I love ape toys. Even as Made in China dimestore specials, produced in the oodles, I couldn't love it any less. But sadly, one of those things that I will just have to resign myself to appreciating in photos. Very cool auction though, and nice to see one out there.

I also saw this auction and I noticed the similarity with the figures of Gorilla Ju, but I have a doubt is a vintage bootleg or a latest production bootleg:?:
It's a beautiful piece, but a little expensive for me :(

It is an authentic vintage bootleg of King Kong. HS based his middle size Gorilla Ju and the standard size after that pachi. It's tied to HS not mainly because he did a re-sculpting of it in the standard size and than did almost a replica in the middle size. But because Hirota father sculpted that pachi KK. It was even mention that even though his father sculpted the pachi KK he did not own one.

I was watching that auction. Lately I've been pondering the deep cash aspect of the hobby. All do respect for those that can buy items that sit on the shelf but wow....

Never knew this! Thanks for the lesson. Really cool to think of the impact the father's old work had on the son many years later.

Yeah, I know the buyer. Its going to a good home. Collector extraordinaire.

One of the small transparent Mazinger Z guts vinyls went for 46,055 yen! So glad I got mine when I did.

ma-ba ソフビ マッド博士 ゾンビーズ 4体セット マーバ
    went for 76,000 yen

a very rare series 1 ma-ba zombie came on auction recently.
In Japan the 3rd one from the left seems to be the hardest one to get.

The Ma-Ba toys are pretty fantastic. I would happily have a whole series on my shelves. Luckily the collectability and pricing of them keeps me from having to hunt yet another toy line. But boy they are lovely designs. One of those toys I would definitely add on my 'time machine pickup list.' I can see why the third one might be really sought after, it has really such a wonderful horror/'gruesomeness' look.

Those are pretty awesome. Do you know were they made? I can't convert yen in my head (don't buy much from Japan/Japanese sites), so the first time I looked at these I figured they would be worth considerably less than that.

They are indeed great. These MaBa zombie guys came out in 1987 (you can just make out the date on the bottom left of one of those packages), and was a combined effort between Mattel toys and Bandai (hence Ma-Ba). They came out in the 80s right around the time the 'ooze' craze was really taking off, hence you can see the 'slimed' photos of those toys on the packaging. I am sure there are some more comprehensive sites detailing the whole series, but a cursory explanation pf the history of them can be found here.

Oh, wow, there's some really nice ones on that page, too. The grim reaper guy is sublime, followed by the cyclops and Black Lagoon-type guy. They're all great! So, that page indicates some of these were released in the US, they just didn't take off. That's kind of surprising, actually (that they were released here, not that they didn't sell). They probably ended up dying slow deaths sitting on the clearance shelves at K-B and Toys 'R' Us, no one recognizing their wonders. I've actually found a couple interesting things on those clearance shelves.

Thanks for hooking me up with that info!

yeah, it really is unfortunate. Equally so, in that I really miss the days when you could get away with selling these types of 'gross-out' toys [that hadn't yet been cutesy-ified] in regular toy shops. You know, before parents would taken it upon themselves to lose their minds (oh, please, won't somebody think of the children!) and when the stores would automatically give in to this mass misplaced hysteria. I am glad that they got to see the light of day, but miss the age of these too.

Not to mention you used to be able to get toys that shot projectiles and stuff! I had a Shogun Warriors Dragun that shot throwing stars AND threw battle axes! Loved that thing to death. In retrospect it's pretty remarkable that I owned something that was that distinctly Japanese at that early age of an age.

Some ones I hadn't seen yet in that pic. The two green ones in the front row are both look PHENOMENAL.

yeah, there were two series of gacha toys for the series as well. im not complete on those either, but they seemed to be a little more lax with movie rights- the green ones up front kind of resemble tarman from return of the living dead and the other is kind of carpenter Thing-esque. i've got a sheet of sticker/seals a la bikkuriman that have artwork for unreleased ones as well, including gremlins, friday the 13th, and a couple others. pretty extensive and fun

They both looked familiar, but I couldn't come up with anything specific. Well, except that the "Tarman" one reminds me a lot of Powell-Peralta's Ripper logo (which has been around since '78, amazingly enough). They just have similar "I'm harmless, really!" expressions.

A most adorable and ancient looking Booska pendant, ending at 19100 JPY. The item description translated as "Cisco Marsan Booska Pendant". Does anyone have any info on this cutie? Was he a regular toy release or some sort of specialty toy. So cute, and love those bubble bee bee eyes! :)

It is a nice piece and interesting for the foot stamp, but a little bit expensive.
