I was not impressed at all last night. I know Lynch's style can be very disorienting and disjointed but so many things felt forced and to be honest just boring overall with 2 hours of what the fuck is going on? Forced cameos that didn't add anyhting to the plot. I don't need to be spoon fed, but give us something centralized besides Cooper's rogue doppelganger being a serial killer. Felt like a bad student art film. I hope this gets better because right now I want those 2 hours back in my life.

So far it's better than season 2.
It is what it is - I like it slow with nothing going on anyways.

I think the first two hours were perfect. The soundscapes were thick and tense. It was visually stunning, but the pairing of Mr. Badalamenti and Mr. Lynch really help form audio atmospheres that I've missed for quite some time. It was weird and sexy and confusing and honestly just held my attention really well. I can see how this might not be for everyone, but it feels like it was made for me specifically. I dig it. Getting ready to watch episodes 3 and 4 rn.

If you don't like Lost Highway/Mullholland Dr. era Lynch, then you're not going to like the show. It is NOT the kitschy Twin Peaks from the nineties. My wife and I loved it. I'm watching part three right now, and the beginning is actually more akin to his early shorts. I mean, he's going all the WAY back with his images and style here. If you belonged to his website in the early 2000s you can sense some of that stuff here, too.

I anticipate there will a LOT of disappointed people.

EDIT: I also pretty much love that the CGI stuff is super cheesy!

But I love Lost Highway and Mullholland Drive (own both) and I'm not looking for kitschy 90's Twin Peaks either. Still thought last night was two hours of garbage. To each their own I guess.

I wasn't directing my comments at you Lixx, just a generalization really. And of course I realize that that generalization won't be true for everyone.

Oh no I didn't think that was directed at me I was just reiterating what you said as a "well that describes my view to a t!" but still I didn't like it. Hoping it will grow on me, as I'm always wary of slow starts. That could change with a few intro characters, and something else besides Cooper has a evil twin plot. I'd rather see a new story that connects to the old one (and fill in some gaps from the first time) than a continuation of Cooper/ Laura Palmer forever.

Well, the evil twin plot starts to get sorted out early in the third episode, but it still takes awhile for things to get going. There are more tangents outside of Twin Peaks, and only a few scenes in TP in EP 3.

I have a strange history with Lynch's output. My first exposure to Lynch was actually seeing The Elephant Man when I was 11. Loved it. Didn't know Lynch from Lucas at that point. My sister and I tried to watch Eraserhead when we were teenagers and couldn't do it. It's now my number one favorite movie of all time. I fell asleep during my first viewing of Blue Velvet, but love that movie to pieces. I still don't care too much for Fire Walk With Me, or Wild at Heart (was really disappointed with that one). Lost Highway also took a few views to appreciate. So I'd like to think I'm not just a sycophant who will excuse every misstep as genius, but I really did get a super deep Lynch vibe from the first two episodes. I think he's taking his sweet ass time to get back deep into Twin Peaks, but there is more of it in EP 4. Not sure at this point what's going to get Cooper back there, but I've no doubt it will happen.

Two words for EP 4: Wally Brando.

Yep, me too. The first season of Twin Peaks was a very important TV landmark in my life, so I'm very biased, but i really got good vibes from those two first new eps.

I was living in N. Ireland when the first series aired, and I remember my Irish girlfriend and i rushing home to catch each episode. We never missed even a minute, we were so obsessed. We didn't have a VHS so there was no taping it . . .

I remember loving the second season just as much, but a few years ago I rewatched it and was surprised how patchy it was compared to season one. Lots of filler, and meandering plot lines . . .

Seems like they have stripped Peaks back to its essentials, or I'm hoping so, judging from these two eps. I now have high hopes for this new season.

Seeing many of the original actors from the show, reprising their roles, was a fucking joy . . .

Rewatching the second season was painful for me. So many of the side-stories were just groan inducing. The putz who had Laura's diary, and the whole "whose baby is it?" scenario were so, so bad. It rallies at the end of course, but man, it has some lame stuff in there, too.

As a non twin peaks watcher and not very familiar with lynchs works would you guys recommend watching this? I'm about 45 min into the first episode and some of it seems intriguing but I gotta say the acting is pretty bad, so far. This could David Lynchs style so please forgive me for saying that but I can't really get into anything when the acting is bad making the characters unbelievable.

I just got to the part where Steve-o gets taken in cuffs from his house! God damn, Matthew Lillard looks old as fuck![spolier/]

The bad, or over the top, acting is part of the Lynch style. Sometimes though, it's because he uses non-actors (this happens in EP 3 & 4 of the new series with a certain female FBI agent). For me, Wild at Heart has a LOT of this bad/over the top acting, which is probably why it's one of my least favorite Lynch films.

I think sometimes Lynch's rhythm makes the acting seem bad when it's really not.
Most of his stuff has an unnatural timing of the delivery of lines. I think he enjoys living in that silence between dialogue. Something very comfortable about it, to me.

I like what I've watched so far. Not what I expected, but I'm going to keep my expectations to nothing now. I'd rather just watch it unfold to whatever it is. Loved the NY box scenes. Great industrial sound effects on switches and elevator doors, etc. (very Eraserhead in that way).
But of course I want more twin peaks, not these other cities..

I really enjoyed the first 4 hours... seems like it's building towards a truly epic conclusion. So far it's been a concentrated dose of my favourite pieces from other Lynch projects

This is much better stated than my comment. Lynch came to film through art, so I think he sees actors and acting as brush strokes on a canvas. Although there have been some really amazing performances in his movies (Blue Velvet and Mulholland in particular) a lot of it is more stylized for mood and effect.

I thought it was very much the style of Eraserhead....which I dig, but I really still have an itch for some more connected dialogue mixed in. I saw it as a collage of events that would hopefully sort themselves out in the upcoming series. It was like, okay, here is Cooper in the lodge, backwards talk, giant, all that stuff, Laura Palmer, right off the bat. Then the log lady, and the one armed man show up. Then Bob was mentioned, Shelly is still hot, James is still a douche, the Mill is shown to let you know that will still be going on, and then it ends with a Twin Peaksy song. It was like a satisfying bite of all that is Twin Peaks, but then you realize it was very Cliche, and didn't fill you up and you're still hungry. I also didn't like that the whole OG series was based around ONE murder. Not to be a spoiler but Cooper is piling up bodies like cinder blocks. I was more intrigued when it was hard to die in Twin Peaks. There was like 5 deaths in the first episode. Twin Peaks never needed to be a bloodbath to be interesting. It originally started quirky, but got stranger and stranger, and Laura's Death took on an occultish vibe which really captivated and disturbed people. By the time you got to the Black Lodge you were terrified back in the day. Now it's just thrown right in your face, like Natural Born Killers or something---and it's not shocking, it's just whatever. I'm still all in, it's better than 100% of the crap on TV....but it was not a masterpiece, I'll give you that.

I loved it. Jagged slices of darkness interspersed with kitschy throwbacks from the show. Lots of Eraserhead/Mullholand Drive/Lost Highway peeking through, which were far darker than the original television series.
The soundtrack was incredible, especially the night driving scene from Ep. 1. As someone who loves Lynch but has mixed emotions about Twin Peaks as a whole, these first two episodes have me hoping for a masterpiece in opaque horror. We'll see how everything plays out, but I am definitely along for the ride.

Gloriously janky special effects; cavernous and immersive soundscapes; glacially paced, theme-filled set-pieces; outer, inner and netherspace; bio-hazard grade vomit and no less than 3 Coopers running around the lot of it? Sold and sold!

Biggest gut-laugh of the year to date: Albert preemptively knowing to bring a photograph of Mount Rushmore.

The sound is phenomenal! No one does it better. And as you mentioned @toothaction the cheesy CGI is just so perfectly bad. Can't wait till June 4 so I can see something new. And knowing there's 18 hours of this stuff is kinda heady.

    ^^ Totally.

Its funny, i was just trying to explain this to a work colleague. He asked me if the new season would make any sense, if he hadn't seen 1 & 2.
I told him in the long run he would be much better off watching from the beginning because he would get far more out of the new season if he did.

He came back in this morning and the first thing he said about the very first episode was the acting was a bit cheesy . . . .

I choked myself I was laughing so hard at that scene. And not because he was funny, but it was so out of left field. I hope we see him cruising on his bike with some real cheesy graphics.

^^ I dunno, Wally Brando kinda left me cold - and i like Michael Cera.

I think that was the problem, i just kept thinking 'Oh, what is George Michael from Arrested Development doing in Twin Peaks?'.
To be fair, i was tired the night i watched it and kept spacing-out. I need to watch it again. I did think the pacing was all over
the place in ep4 compared to the first 3, though . . .
