Matrix' Reboot is Potentially Happening. Ugh.

    quote:
In our hearts, we all knew this day would come. Warner Bros. is planning a reboot of The Matrix just 18 years after the iconic sci-fi action film dazzled audiences around the world, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The Matrix films were lauded for their creativity, special effects, and distinct cyberpunk and manga influences. In total, the trilogy grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide.

The Matrix will join other famous film properties -- Star Wars, Godzilla, Planet of the Apes, and Terminator among them -- receiving a recent franchise reboot or "reimagining."

Others include RoboCop, Star Trek, Ghostbusters, and Jurassic Park.

Read about it. The first Matrix was amazing. It was so ahead of it's time. But the other two ruined it.

Yeah, I can see (and heard) the argument to redo the other two as they were a mess.

I enjoyed the Animatrix though. It fleshed out some of the Matrix universe with sidestories, plus it had the origin tale of the whole mess.

Finally watched Europa Report on Netflix last night.
It was pretty good. It was a decent tale of space travel and the difficulties that astronauts/space travelers could face. This was along the lines of Moon or Sunshine, as opposed to the recent Life or any other killer alien flick. It also had Sharlto Copley, so that's always a plus.

There is an image in one of those stories of a robot pulling a guy out of a mech suit, and his limbs stay strapped into the suit, so he's completel dismembered as his torso is pulled out. That image has really stuck with me for years. It definitely triggered a true deep seated nightmare scenario for me. Now that's some good filmmaking!

I enjoyed that movie quite a bit. Felt like a halfway documentary until the last 45 minutes.

Has anyone seen Hunter Prey? It's an older movie(2010 I think)with a tiny budget but I thought it was really well done. Only had 2 to 3 weeks to shoot the entire thing which makes it even more impressive. I think it was on netflix years ago but it's gone now. Whole thing is on youtube though.

I watched Kill Command over the weekend on Netflix. It's a standard cast-whittling-down kind of film, but I enjoyed it. Decent enough CG and the military characters were somewhat decent/competent in it. (Dare I say badass? Well, one was.)

I thought someone else here saw it too, but I can't find the reference.

Random thoughts for the morning after:
The whole being "chipped" idea with electronic inserts into the brain for medical or military reasons was totally taken from Ghost in the Shell. One character even syncs up with the scope on his rifle, a la Saito.

Any comparison beyond this isn't an even a fair fight between GiTS and this film, but some of the novelty of the night before wore off.

Also weird I watched this the same weekend the live action GiTS came out. Still need to see that too.

I went to Ghost in the Shell (with very low expectations), and I loved it. It's beautifully shot, the background details are frankly amazing, and the story is not nearly as asinine as some have painted it to be. I can only surmise the naysayers are the same kind of people who hate whatever's not the same as in the original material (to which I'd say HAVE YOU READ THE GitS COMIC?).

Indeed, the anime varies wildly to the manga . . .

I have to agree, i loved it too and i wasn't expecting to like it so much. It seems like a very long time since i used to watch the original movie on VHS so i was dealing with nostalgic feelings, kinda like how i felt when i saw Watchmen in the cinema. There are a huge amount of visual details either directly taken from the anime or inspired by it, but they also went their own way when they deemed it necessary . . .

All the actors did a good job in my opinion and the soundtrack was pretty good, too. It was great to see Takeshi Kitano again, and i liked the fact they did'nt try and force him to speak English. He speaks Japanese the whole way through.

I wonder how it will be received in Japan? I'm hoping it does well. I would love to see Appleseed made into a live action movie as well. That would rule.

I have to say the language part was the only thing that peeved me. Without spoiling anything, I would have assumed a lot more diversity than English + that one guy speaking Japanese, especially with the actors that speak with a thick accent. I mean, it's one of the points of the film that anything can be learned in seconds... And walking around in most large cities these days, you'll overhear conversations in a dozen languages.

I guess they still cater first and foremost to the anglosaxon public...

Been binging the new MST3K series on Netflix and I am loving it. If you're a fan of the original series, you'll probably love this one. I'm actually almost enjoying it more than the original.

OK, I saw Colossal a couple months ago now, and here is my opinion:
It was well made, but I didn't like it, and ultimately it was forgettable.

I just watched Gantz:0 on Netflix. It's a CGI film based on the manga, Gantz (duh, but it is a different title from the film), and it is exactly what I thought and hoped it would be.

Gantz is a ridiculous, violent, messed-up-at-points manga, but it is well-drawn and entertaining. This movie captures that vibe much more than the live action films from a few years prior. (I saw those but can't remember much other than thinking the second went elsewhere.) The movie pretty much covers the manga's Osaka arc with some modifications to the characters, but nothing too radical.

The CGI is incredible. Environments and lighting are spectacular with a few moments where I wondered if I was actually watching CGI, but with most movies of the type, the humans are a little clunky. Think Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, but newer.

    Dumb? Yup.
    Fun? Yup.

I did a more manga-based post over here:

Haha, i felt the same way except i did like it well enough. It was fine, but i did'nt think it lived up to all the hype.
Kevin Smith wouldn't shut up about it . . .

I was expecting something a lot more nuanced and arty.

'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets'
    Upcoming Luc Besson flick . . .

I'm curious about this one mainly because i've been collecting the English translation graphic novels of 'Valerian and Laureline'
for years. The series has recently been republished (in English) by Cinebook but ive been trying to find them in their earlier
    translations by Dargaud International.

It looks like the film has updated the look from the comics 60's/70's style, but it still looks pretty cool.

Nah, mate. I've been preoccupied with changing jobs. My brother said he read the reaction to it was not favourable, people calling it a bit lacking in substance or something. I still wanna see it though . . .

Origin Ward The Osiris Child was absolutely great. It felt like a big budget science fiction film and had great acting and wonderful practical and cgi effects. I am shocked they pulled this off for well under a million dollars. I enjoyed it from start to finish. A real low budget gem.
