This is on Netflix now. Kind of threw me off to see Dolph vaping. Liked his kit though. :) Other than that, it's pretty much exactly as Waterbear describes, although I don't think I appreciated it as much as he did.

I have a soft spot for low budget sort of shitty but really fun movies! Sure the serious stuff with actual acting and plots that make sense is great too but I find myself in the mood for mindless fun a lot lately.

Watched this last night I for sure like that Mancini is taking the time to build a really layered universe. like its a story with a lot of twists and turns.

I didn't realize that Mancini has written a couple of the scripts for the first and second season of Channel Zero. Dude knows how to create some creepy stuff!

The Cube and a few of the sequels are up on Netflix now!

I loved the cube and I am kind of shocked that it is 20 years old now. Geez. The sequels are more miss than hit but the original is pretty great.

The Babysitter, a Netflix, "original," is a fun little slice of horror comedy. Leslie Bibb and Ken Marino of Hell Baby and Bad Milo fame respectively, are in it briefly. Like most horror/comedy flicks it loses steam in the third act, but it had enough humor and gore to keep me interested.

Oh, did anyone see Bone Tomahawk? It's not straight-up horror, one of those genre-bending things. I enjoyed it quite a bit. If you like Westerns and slow-building horror, you'll probably like it, too. I guess it came out a few years ago, it may well've been touched on here, but it's kinda overlooked, imo.

EDIT: Eight hits, all from this thread, including one from the gentleman above. Well, I don't think giving it a plug is a a travesty. Going to go read what you all thought.

EDIT2: Couple folks saying they felt it was wrongly classed a horror, and I felt the same way, but my experience with horror is really scant, so I didn't feel I was in the position to make that pronouncement. Particularly when it's contrary to the media consensus (read: hype, I guess).

    Now:
I was literally reminding myself to come back and edit this to add in how awesome Jenkins performance was when I turned the page and saw this. The only thing I know him from is Six Feet Under, and I don't really remember noticing anything remarkable about his acting. I was impressed with this one. maybe you need to be familiar with that character trope from Westerns? I know it from listening to old time radio shows. Particularly Andy Devine, I guess in The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, and apparently he went on to do it in TV and movie westerns as well. Barney Fife probably has some of that in him. And Jenkins was able to take that goofy, comedic character and make it real-world believable in some balancing act. I dunno, it's pretty rare that an actors performance will actually impress me enough for me to notice. Last time was Tilda Swinton in Snowpiercer. I hadn't noticed she was a great actress till then (which, not noticing, that's fine, too).

    I liked it.

Kind of falls into that annoying teenage horror genre but done with enough gore and they killed off the stereotypical characters fast enough to keep it entertaining.

I really liked the babysitter, great halloween season surprise!

Just watched Brawl in Cell block 99, which looks like it was by the same guy as Bone tomahawk, it's terrible but in a great way, like shitty old prison B movie style. I get kind of bummed when movies are too tongue in cheek referential to old genre movies, like hobo with a shotgun (although I like it a lot more now than the first time I saw it.) and that stupid tarantino grindhouse shit. It's just too much of a fanboy wank fest sometimes. This one felt like the old movies though, more earnest in it's ambitions, but also just really shitty which makes it funner than it should be.

I saw that too. I actually enjoyed it as well. It wasn't good in the normal sense of the word but I was entertained the entire time. It was almost like someone decided to make Vince Vaughn into Marv from Sin City and base an entire movie around it. The violence though poorly executed(Vince just isn't very athletic)was nicely choreographed and the brutality and gore was exceptional. Reminded me of an action movie from before every film needed huge set pieces and cars crashes and giant explosions. Plus I have a soft spot for the sister from Dexter and prison movies are always fun.

Just heard about the Demons Rook (from 2012) yesterday and watched it last night, I love that shit! It's low budget, can barely hear any dialogue in some of the outdoor scenes, but no CGI and some fun demon battles and great gore!

Same guy that made the Void from the looks of it.

How high were you guys when watching Fremdscham in Cellblock 99..?? :? I actually liked Bone Tomahawk back then, but apparently it's the director's shtick to make needlessly overlong movies with some over-the-top violence in the last couple of minutes (and it wasn't even done that well this time). Bland, boring and cringy. Seeing a fucking icon of cinema like Kier having to earn his pension in shit like this truly pains me. Hobo with a Shotgun was brilliant imo, why anyone would prefer over two hours of nothing much to Rutger Hauer on a concise, stilistically perfect, utterly insane rollercoaster of outrageous ideas & neon gore is beyond me. Going to re-watch Riki-Oh tomorrow to cleanse myself...

Sorry, but no sir, I didn't like it.

I didn't even know who made the movie. All I knew going in was that there was a brawl in a prison. I was happy to see Vince Vaughn in something not as shitty as true detective season two and I enjoyed the gore above everything else in the movie. Yeah it was unrealistic but so is all the other gore I watch considering I live in this horror thread. I can't argue with it being boring between fight scenes because I was actually doing artwork stuff and watching at the same time so it wasn't holding my complete attention. I try not to compare one thing to another very often because if I did every TV show would be shit compared to Hannibal and The Wire and every movie that wasn't The Thing wouldn't be worth watching.

Slow to the party as usual, but I finally watched The Void. I enjoyed it. There's something about almost-abandoned facilities that I get a kick out of. They're empty and poorly light, but not completely trashed or overgrown. (Last Shift is another example in location only.)
    Awesome practical effects too!!

I also watched The Shrine earlier in the week. Meh. Slow, annoying characters, okay plot twist ending.

Both are streaming on Netflix....but you all know that.

I was regular high and I like shitty action movies, not like shitty Michael Bay action movies but more like shitty Wings Hauser action movies, or David Heavener, I definitely get into the cringy shit.

I had to Google to figure out where I knew her from. I was pretty sure she played a cop, but that's as far as got.

So, I was just squawking about Bone Tomahawk up there, unaware that the guy had a new film out (till I read about it between that post and this one), but I just finished and enjoyed it, and I will say that I watched it in maybe two installments, which is pretty rare for me (I have major issues focusing, and tend to watch stuff in 25 or so minute segments). Halfway through I was hooked and had to ride it out. The two most remarkable things to me were that it was as critically well-received as it was, you know, this kind of a movie (like @Count mentioned, there's an element of terrible). I think that probably has to do with Tarantino making this kind of thing acceptable/hip. I mean, Ebert would've liked it, Pauline Kael. But for a consensus to dig it to this degree?

Also, I was going to comment on the song choices when I noticed that all the songs were written by the director and another guy. And recorded by a few different artists, The O'Jays being the only one I recognized. Which explains why all these songs were so consistent in their... tone, I guess, which was a bit cold despite being soul/funk, and you never heard any of them before, even though it felt like you should've. I think that just added a subtle layer (in a movie short on subtlety), emotionally, I guess. Basically, I was struck by the songs that were used, and not in a way I think I had been before watching a movie

Other then that, I thought it was great. And not nearly as slow as BT, I didn't think. I really don't have too many reference points as far exploitation/B cinema goes, other than by way of Tarantino, so I went in pretty blind that way. But I guess I should be learning this directors name soon, because, despite the imperfections, I really like his material and what he's up too.

Yes the music! I hadn't looked it up after but I definitely had more than one "what is this?!" moment throughout the movie.

I always found the songs by David Hess in the original Last house on the Left really set the tone for that film in a very strange way.

I couldnt deal with Cult of Chucky... granted there was a few lines that had me laughing... I couldn't follow the story. Granted I got out of the franchise after Bride of Chucky (this was kind of too cheesy to throw me out the series) So I get how I could miss some stuff being out for 2 movies. I dont want to give off spoilers, but the plot line of "cult" had me going if this could be done, why was it not done when andy was little.
