Not a movie, but I just finished The Expanse season two and it is the best Science Fiction I have seen in quite a while - movies or series. I really love it.
I didn't read the book but I thought Annihilation was one of the most unique and visually satisfying movies I've seen in awhile. I saw Upgrade last night and thought it was great, I could see it gaining a cult following. The music that went with it was awesome!
I saw the preview for Upgrade when I went to see A Quiet Place but there was no sound in the theater. It looked pretty cool, and I like the lead actor, but you don't realize how important the sound is until there is none. Have been hearing good things about it though.
Why was there no sound, completely embracing the Quiet Place theme? That was another really good movie.
Our area had a major power outage earlier that morning--which was actually why I was at the movies in the first place--so the theater had had to reboot their system. Apparently this caused the no sound issue. I did take note of the irony as I sat there in a silent theater. I was ticked mainly because they had shown the trailer for Hereditary and you REALLY need the sound for that one!
Just gonna throw in on the last few posts- Annihilation is a fantastic movie, and if you enjoyed the movie check out the book as they are almost completely different but with complimentary themes and plots. The book is incredibly eerie and contains a lot of twists and surprises different from the film. I don't necessarily rec the other two books in the series though, the first was a clear standout and easy stand alone book IMO. Expanse I enjoy, also would recommend the books but not as much if you've already seen the show as they follow things relatively closely. Overall there's things I wish were done better and characters I didn't picture the same(who ever does?) but they nail enough of the important stuff to make it worthwhile. Quiet Place is fantastic in every way, just saw Hereditary over the weekend and it was well done and disturbing but doesn't quite reach the heights the incredible trailer promises. The first half is a standout to me, especially one incredibly traumatic sequence. About to check out Upgrade late tonight as I doubt it will survive the theater switchover this week.
Episode from Space 1999. The monster scene was always a favorite of mine when I was a kid watching this show.
Annihilation" is another gem from a phenomenal director whose been taking cinema to the next level for quite some time now.
Ozploitation is alive and well and living in theatres for another few hours... just got back from a screening of Upgrade and literally had the place all to myself. On the off chance that the film survives until tomorrow, give it a shot: it's an economical B with plenty of laughs and style that seemingly crawled out of an '80s rental bin without trying to yank yr nostalgia chains. Anybody here give Quarry a watch? One of my favorite programs from the past few years and it shares its lead, Logan Marshall-Green, with this neat little cheapie.
I too caught upgrade in an empty theater right before it was replaced. Really dug it. A big reason I checked it out was due to Quarry, was sad the show didn't get another season but thankfully the first is self contained enough to not matter. I watched Quarry all in one day(something I never do with shows) and madr me think that a lot of movies had been wasting Logan Marshal Green... thankfully Upgrade did not continue that trend.
It's a fantastic one season show about a young war veteran who just returns home full of PTSD in the 70s as he navigates his personal life, criminal elements, and increasing racial tensions. It's overall amazing with one or two minor missteps
What @RezE11even said @Brooklyn_Vinyl. It's OnDemand via Cinemax. Might be streaming through another service, but I'm not sure about that. It's a great show.
The most excellent lead actor, Logan Marshall-Green. It takes place in the Memphis of '72, by the way, and I can't think of a show that utilizes the peripheral music of the day in a better fashion, from literal record drops to bands in the back of bar scenes.
Gotcha, I guess that was mentioned previously but I have a disability when it comes to the names of actors. Thank you for all the info, I'll try to see if I can find a way to stream it.
Upgrade was great - some real early-Cronenberg style shit going on there! Have there been any other interesting sci-fi films released this year?
SOLO! I'm in the camp that liked Annihilation a lot. The other camp has plenty of supporters, though.
After becoming rather obsessed (possessed?) with the Southern Reach trilogy and finishing it before I saw the film adaptation of Annihilation, I really did not enjoy it. Visually - very awesome but story wise it felt like they were trying to pack too much in and left out some of the key parts for me. I think the whole trilogy would be better adapted to a 10 part mini series or similar.
Torn about whether or not to drop my pennies for a public screening of The Predator. On the one hand, I'm a big fan of Shane Black, on the other hand... like it's not going to be a frustrating mess.
