I liked Resolution because it felt like what was hidden behind all the mystery and creepy shit was a movie about friendship and loyalty and what that means to different people. The Endless kind of does the same thing. The world is bigger since Resolution was basically just two people and this new film has lots of actors in it but behind all the spooky stuff and science and mystery it really is about two brothers and how they interact with each other.

This writer/director duo has quite a deft hand at blending genres together in cool ways but still keeping some real heart in their films.

Anybody check out Spring, the second film by the Resolution folks? I haven't had a look at even a film still, but I know GDT is a big fan.

Streaming on Shudder, says the net.

Its been awhile since I saw it but I enjoyed Spring. Definitely worth a watch. Didn't realize their other two movies were worth checking out. They will be added to my watchlist.

Oh, shit yeah! I had it in my head that it was just a similar film and not by the same dudes. I think I even brought it up here awhile back. I dug that one a LOT.

Damn, I am so impressed with Moorhead and Benson! Missed them completely until the recent mention of The Endless... even ignoring the good word about Spring here way back when. Ooops!

Jebus, those two are the modern kings of naturalism, giving us characters that are so matter-of-fact in the face of absurdity to a level that I've rarely encountered. Thank you, internet strangers, for bringing them to my attention.

I still haven't dug into any net commentary about their films, and I'm presuming that the following has already been said a thousand times, but Spring is Żuławski's Before Sunrise. Best earned Hallmark movie of the week ending ever, too. I got plenty out of Cabin in the Woods, I'll admit, but Resolution opened and closed the book on horror trope meta commentary... still processing The Endless.

Damn! Best five hours and fourteen minutes spent this year.

Here was my take on Resolution from awhile back. Maybe I should give it another go. I often change my mind on movies depending on mood.

^^^ Horror was but an element of its interests, I'd say. I read it as a naturalistic drama with supernatural undertones and it did me just fine by those standards. It was about movies as much as it was one, I guess. I bought it for what it was, rather than imposing any specific genre needs from it... if that makes sense. Tone, daddy!

Pyewacket was both entertaining and odd. So the plot is pretty basic. Teenage girl upset at shitty mom decides to do a ritual from one of her evil witch books against her mom. Of course mom apologies and the kid regrets doing witchcraft. Normally that would be the lead in to a movie. Like the first 15 minutes. Not the case in this film. That stuff happens and then the entire rest of the film is just building tension and making you feel uncomfortable with uncertainty and noise and stress up until the very end when something happens. Really ballsy to try and pull that off I think. Not sure it worked as intended but I applaud the effort. Good acting and filming too. Felt like a real movie and not some no budget horror thing. Worth a watch but again, if you want lots of stuff actually happening and can't sit through the slow boil you won't get through this film.

How It Ends is a post-apocalyptic movie that just came out on netflix. I enjoyed the ride a lot but the ending wasn't satisfying at all for me. Most movies in this genre tend to be set long after whatever event destroyed civilization but this one is about what happens during the end and in the days directly after. They did a great job of making everything feel small and personal then slowly letting you see the bigger picture as the movie goes on. Effects were great, acting was great, atmosphere was really tense. I always loved Forrest Whitaker and he does a great job in this film. Netflix delivers on this one despite how I feel about the ending.

Personally I would have loved the film if it wasn't for what seems like netflix trying to set us all up for a sequel. I wouldn't mind a sequel but it would have been a great stand alone movie with a better ending.

Has anyone watched Calibre on Netflick (<this is what my mom calls it)? Have heard good stuff, but I'm not sure if I wanna give it a go.

From the group that brought you TurboKid. I’m stoked for this and before anyone complains about it being a rip of Stranger Things, this was in production prior to season 1 of ST being made. Plus, ST is a rip anyways haha

Been too long since I dove into this thread. Some great recommendations here, I caught Spring some time ago, but definitely interested in picking up Resolution and Endless now.

Anyone have thoughts on Hereditary? Without ruffling too many feathers, I'll just say I am not sure it lives/d up to the hype. But as a diversion in the genre from the clockwork of jump scares and YA audience targeting, at least I can say it was a needed refreshment (if not wholly novel in some respects).

Enjoying the A24 migration to Netflix and finally got around to watching Tusk.
3 years late to the discussion, but siding with @a.tom & @ultrakaiju on this one. Knew the movie received poor reviews, but besides that jumped in blind... and loved every minute of it. Judge away haters ;)

Not without its flaws, but Tusk scored major points for the sheer WTFness of the whole concept. Wayyy out of left field, but it worked. Solid acting and production value (for a low budget film) as well.
That said, I may be slightly biased from having seen Yoga Hosers first. Far-fetched premise that (unlike its predecessor) fell completely flat, imo. Movie seemed like nothing more than a misguided attempt to launch Smith & Depp's daughters' acting careers.

So 1 hit & 1 miss. I guess Moose Jaws (which is apparently still happening) will have to be the tie-breaker.

Yeah, get on those A24 movies. Under the Skin, Ex Machina, Enemy, just to name a few. Good to know they'll slide over there eventually.

It's pretty cool. Early Denis Villanueve flick. I actually watched it on Netflix back before A24 struck their deal with Amazon. I'm a sucker for doppleganger stuff. Shoot, now I wanna watch it again.

Ahh, I went in just a couple posts too late in seems, thanks Jonathan. So, other than hearing it was quite well received, I knew next to nothing about the film. Did not see a trailer or even read a synopsis actually; so pretty much went in as blind as could be (outside of knowing its rough genre). I guess it is just the eternal cynic in me, but much in the same way I had neither extreme polar reactions with The Last Jedi, I strangely seem to be the only one who falls in the middle of critical/audience reception for it. That's not to say it wasn't incredibly well done. Without a doubt it had some lovely cinematography and acting chops (though somewhat hit and miss). I just didn't get any of the 'overwhelming' sensation or fear most have seemed to take away from it. Without getting too much into the precise plot points:

I found the general plot very well telegraphed. The whole 'cult' aspect of it, the underlining social commentary on mental disorders and relationships, the eventual outcome, etc. I am not claiming by any means I could have written the movie from the first five minutes, but I certainly didn't find any surprises by the time the 2+ hours were up; but that also isn't to say it wasn't an interesting journey. There were some flaws with it, but by and large I was still pleased to not see the same old formulaic piece of modern film 'horror.' So I don't know. I was probably more excited to see A Quiet Place, which might well be a weaker film, but am not wholly disappointed I gave it a chance.

Synopsis - I think it's weakest point was the last 10-15(?) mins, where everything 'came together.' Not unlike the last 2mins or so of The VVitch, I think it just works better without lowering itself to the spelled out conclusions/tropes.

@smurph Glad someone else enjoyed Tusk. :) Though I have very little hope for either of the other two, and think they probably should not have been made even, I try and view it in a light of its own.

Interesting. When you mentioned Hereditary I immediately thought of A Quiet Place and The Witch. But I have the complete opposite opinion! I thought A Quiet Place was crap - from the get go, I just couldn't buy in. There was the skeleton of a good idea, but aside from the sound editing/mixing I thought it was a load. And...
I loved the endings of both The Witch and Hereditary. Watching H, I immediately thought of the end of W. The ending to H was a bit ham-fisted and clumsy, but I really like that both movies turned the usual outcome of horror and damnation on its head, and you walk away with a more uplifting feeling. With W I thought the ending was pure resolution, rather than a spelled out conclusion. Their "Christian" lives were so horrific (to them, not necessarily the viewer) that the catharsis of "turning away from god" was a much needed release and revelation.
If you are looking for a scary movie, I don't think either Hereditary or The Witch deliver. But as movies, ignoring genre entirely, I thought both were great - The Witch is one of the best movies I've seen in the last 10 years (or more).
