Deciding if I want to make my first trip to CA in many years to head out to DCon this year... but, since I just got a new apartment and haven't even moved yet, 2018 is going to be an expensive year for me. Does anyone know when we can expect a full artist/exhibitor list? I would rather make my decision for that with this in mind, if possible. The DCon site is still pointing to the 2017 list, but with tickets going on sale tomorrow, I would hope it is sooner than later.
Honestly, if you've never been that should be reason alone to make trip. Dcon has become THE toy event here stateside. Even if a couple of your favorite artists aren't present, guaranteed there will be plenty of those you like who are. If memory serves, full vendor list usually doesn't hit until a month or 2 before the con. Maybe a little later this year considering the massive expansion. On that note, I wouldn't be stressed about tix. They will not be in short supply. You could even purchase at the door (for a slight markup). All said, this year will undoubtedly be no exception. My only concern is how much the price will be hiked on VIP's this year, with the Friday addition.
^^^ What Mike said @Madmax405 Fwiw, I feel your pain about this being an expensive year. Looking at Dcon as the one nice break from all the woes and stresses 2018 has brought thus far. Event tickets can be put on the backburner. If you make the leap of faith and decide to go, I'd highly suggest doing some footwork now with pricing out flights and lodging as those options will diminish in time. Plenty of reasonable hotel rates at this juncture... guessing you'd prefer to not be stuck dropping $500/night at the Hilton next door. Yeouch.
I was looking today and I saw plane tickets for ~325 each and a decent looking hotel for around 100 a night. Two of us means i'm looking at 950 for 3 nights plus another 100-200 for a rental... its really not that bad. I just know I have expenses coming up in the next 2 months that are going to include things like, repaint the whole apartment, buy a new bed, etc etc, and they definitely add up. I have a decent amount of money saved up, but I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to leave dcon without spending another 2000-3000 on toys. Obviously, my new apartment has to come first.
Planning ahead is key if you are not a local and do not have friends. If you have friends, you can always room together to cut down on cost. Like Sam said, no need to buy tickets right away, they aren't going to be selling out instantly. I just booked a flight there for $79 and I think a return flight is $93, both direct, so timing is everything. Some of the best people I have met, I have met from here, so if it's not toys, it's at least good company. I personally wouldn't think too long and hard about it.
I will be with the girlfriend so not really looking to split a room but damn Kay really... $160?! That's half the amount I am looking at. Can you find me one of those deals from NYC? I am only seeing the $330 flights. Maybe I've lost my touch.
Well Max, it kinda helps that I am central cause my flights to NY with planning is about the same lol
Not if I see you at DV first. October is before November! Edit- well i guess that doesnt make sense... u would still see me at dcon. I'll see myself out now
Oooof Kay... why you gotta call me out like that? Also, I want the name of your travel agent. Those flights are a steal!
LMAO!!!! I didn't mean it like that!!! Just saying sometimes that's the case for some people. I didn't particularly know many people my first time attending I use SW if I can, with the headquarters being local to me and me flying out to bigger cities, it just works out really well that way. So if I don't make it out to an event, it's basically due to poor planning on my end,
No offense taken, of course. Saw the opportunity for self-deprecating humor and couldn't resist. Still blown away by those prices though... Nonstop SW flights to CA from here easily run over 2x that. Guess there's a lot to be said for the closer destination proximity and the company looking out for y'all Texans
I saw a ton of places around 100 a night on expedia if you dont want to go all out but also dont wanna chance it for an extra 30 or 40 bucks a night. Think thats what i'll do.
there is some real suspect ones in that area bro. i learned long ago as a young lad, showed up down south a day before i planned, went cheap for the night, and it was literally the worst travel experience ever lol. im not even sure if airbnb is a good option at this point. we usually book 6-8 months in advance for those. hostels? might be cheap if any in the area, I did that in San Diego for SDCC last month, wasnt bad at all. its a matter of looking up the reviews no matter what you choose.
I'm looking at something equivalent to the radisson anaheim in buena park... im pretty sold on going.
after party has been a Hard sale when it was free to attendees and vendors... i know i did'nt go last year, now $35... that's a easy pass for me. Chevy Metal or no Chevy Metal.
The Dcon venue is across the street from Disneyland and area hotels might sell out and/or go up in price as the date gets closer. The major problem with travel is it's the weekend before Thanksgiving and some people will be already heading out for the holiday so airlines rates are jacked. And Disneyland will be packed as usual. @foto junkaay I'm SO jealous at your airfare. I booked mine weeks ago, AUS to LAX, and paying over $360 plus baggage.
