I'd definitely be interested to see some of his other films. I just took a look at his IMDB and I remember seeing Suicide Club, but I think that's his only other movie I've seen. Tag definitely felt like more of a "sketch" than a "painting", but not knowing the language/culture well enough I also wonder how much subtext I missed that a Japanese viewer would pick up on.
I've recommended Tag to people for the first 10 minutes or so. That opening scene is entertaining without any warning. Beyond that, I don't know many people in real life that would stick with it. I enjoyed it enough though.

That clarified, ha, and as mentioned just before the page flip, don't hold Tag against Mr. Sono! He's a madman and deeply worthy of your time and effort. Also... I had the same brief bout with confusion after the first post, ha! Now I have to watch the 'merican one just to spite myself.
I also highly recommend Mandy! Currently my favorite movie. It's a damn shame that it's not playing everywhere...definitely a flick to be seen on the big screen with the volume way up. My long lost love for Nick Cage has been rekindled! I also highly recommend watching it high too, if you're into that. But maybe stay away from the psychedelics for this one
No to the trailer but I did read the book way back when. Waaay back when. I've liked what little I've seen from the series' writer/director, Mike Flanagan, for what that's worth.
Haven't seen the trailer but I've read the book a few times. It is still usually on the top of the list for the scariest book ever written.
Holy moly Mandy was excellent! Someone smarter than me should write something about all the gnostic mystical references in the film. So far all the writeups I've read have missed it. But its early still. If you are a fan of midnight movies check it out immediately. Most definitely not horror despite this being the horror thread.

@toothaction if you go by the definition of a horror movie being a film that seeks to elicit fear, it definitely is one. I might have overstated it not being a horror film haha. What I should have said is that this is a midnight movie first and horror movie second in my mind. It is bizarre and psychedelic before anything else. A drug film perhaps!
I saw the U.S. premiere of Halloween tonight. It's not as scary as the original but has plenty of good kills and lots of tension. Definitely see it if you're a fan of the '78 film. I liked how David Gordon Green peppers in references to not just the first film but other franchise installments as well, including Season Of The Witch. I did have some problems with the 3rd act which I'll chime in with once you guys post your feedback.

You're not totally fucking wrong. I didn't like the Suspiria remake at all. I went in with high hopes, avoiding all reviews, and knowing nothing about the film except that it was purposely not as visually colorful as Argento's original. What dragged me down the most was the entire Baader-Meinhof / RAF subplot.

Finally managed to see Resolution yesterday, after we were discussing it here in the thread. Did not disappoint. A few questions which I am hoping an eventual rewatch might shed some light on, but I'm also sort of hesitant to revisit some movies like this which will never again capture that first viewing mystique. Anyhow, thanks to everyone who suggested it; I really look forward to The Endless now. Despite the fact that it is Canadian (and you can certainly see it with a keen eye in parts), I am afraid I cannot fully recommend Summer of '84. I'll not mention any plot details to keep this spoiler free. I had a hard time getting into it from the start, and if I am honest it really smacked of trying to follow on Stranger Things far too much. It has some merit, and while you can see - what I think - the filmmakers were going for in terms of setting up just like an '80s adventure horror, I cannot believe that they really lived or understood the time, from what I saw on screen. A valid attempt, but ultimately one which suffered in execution and I think will fall flat with most viewers. Still, it is earning some positive reviews, and took away from attention from Sundance. Personally though, I have to agree with a reviewer from variety who claimed in was note clear from the script whether the movie was intended "to be played for satire, straight suspense, or a mixture of both." A movie like this you need to make your choice and own it. Just so many cliches, poor subplots, and lackluster character development. BUT, this movie committed the one unforgivable sin, it was soooo clearly not 1980s. Seriously, the set designers and costume personnel would have been much wiser just to hit up some local thrift stores and flea markets in Vancouver. In the end, a mediocre film, neither offensive nor highly engrossing or memorable. Save it for a Netflix/streaming queue.
It's hitting Shudder at the end of the month, and I'm going to watch it regardless of the luke-warm reviews here and elsewhere. I'm sure I'll most likely agree (especially if they didn't nail the look of the '80s as you're stating) with what's already been said here. But it'll be free to watch!
