Not to beat a dead horse but I've heard talk that the Sea Head lottery was really just a preorder. Does it seem like a lot of folks won?

Out of curiosity, how many Skull Brainers entered the Sea Head lottery and won. I never reposted the image but I did enter the lottery. And I won. But I've already spent a bunch on toys this month. If this has a large run or is an open order, it definitely doesn't feel worth it. I mean, what actually feels worth five hundred bucks? I think this toy has a lot of cool things about its look. Kind of like elegabs new sculpt. I agree with everyone on here about these new artists and their huge price tags. There's so many new toy artists and overpricing their toys are a cause for a quick demise. I have a feeling very few people are buying Kaiju Tan. And I know the price of that weird slug monster and Olentramba(?) have had to come down due to few people buying their work.

This is what I'm wondering. Not going to pay five hundred dollars for chinese vinyl that hundreds of people will get

But you are willing to pay it, if only a handful of people get it?

The real question is whether you’re going to go thru with your payment after winning the lottery? Regardless of your feelings about it now, you’ve already won so you should follow thru with your commitment. You can always try to pass it on afterwards, but refusal to pay after beating out others in a lottery is a Big No No and doing so can also black list you from lotteries by other makers who might catch wind of you doing so.

Yeah that's pretty odd. If a bunch of people missed out and are disappointed then it's worth $500 dollars but if a lot of people who actually like it are able to get it then it's a Chinese vinyl ripoff. I guess if people see toys as a commodity or investment instead of a toy that would make sense.

    This thing...

Which came out of the gate with a $500 price tag and had a Japanese e-mail account for contact info but people are guessing it's Chinese made and someone here who won the lottery is no longer interested in paying for the toy since the rumor mill is saying lots of people won the lottery.

I get that, although I never reposted his image, making it so I felt like I didn't complete the entry for the lottery. I don't know. I also understand how annoying it is for creators to have people back out of buying something. But that's their right. Anyone can change their mind on a purchase, especially if it could put you in a financial strain. But the thing for me is, I collect art toys. Limited in number and high in quality.

Thanks @Waterbear. It really helps to provide context for these things. Believe it or not, there is a whole section of people who don't chase/follow the latest hyped toys from IG, so most times I feel lost (well, that's not really the right word, because I don't feel like I am missing out either). In any case, the hobby has changed considerably, that much is clear. Whereas SB used to be about talking about vintage Bullmarks, new M1 releases, and so forth, now it only focuses on - I should say offers passing reference to - xxxx lotttery; so hopefully a few people can appreciate this point of view, too. Without coming down one way or the other on the argument, I just think more framing would [in general] be helpful, versus all this wink, wink, nudge, nudge that has become the typical SB 'discussion' in 2018.

What do I know, I'm an old man, get off my lawn, etc., etc.

My bad @ultrakaiju, thank you for the nudge. @boon velvet I didn't enter, so my concern was more that calling a preorder a lottery would be misleading, which is bad for a new maker's credibility. But I jumped the gun considering this is just rumour at the moment; I should have waited.

I mean the other thing is to an extent, people thinking that lottos should be basically kept behind closed doors until they are closed, so it leads to an extent of the hinting at lottos, which is what typically happens. I do agree though, that the discussion of the stuff you're mentioning has definitely decreased. Regardless, I think that the makers entering the market with 500$ price tags for the first release, of their first toy, are absolutely insane, like there is no rhyme or reason to charging that much, other than the fact that they simply want to.

Those are the decisions you come to BEFORE you commit to a purchase. I’m surprised you don’t know this by now. You don’t enter if you cannot pay. If you actually entered, and I don’t care about reposting an image or whatever, if You consciously entered hoping to win , by entering that lottery you are at that time saying that you will buy that toy (special circumstances not correlating to the situation before you entered being the only reason backing out may be excused and that’s still to the artist’s discretion). The balls on you to think you can make up your mind Afterwards. Haha, how entitled you are that the artists whose toys you collect don’t deserve any respect for their time and hardwork.

If you Have Actually canceled out of a lotto just because you changed your mind, the only Fuck You here deserved goes to You! If every asshole thought like that , makers wouldn’t be able to do this.

This pisses me off just as much as flippers and the like. I am in no way defending flippers, but as a comparison, at least the artist is being paid and for what they are asking.

If that is a practice of yours and not just for the sake of a bullshit argument, I have 0 problems passing your name along to the makers you collect, as I hope someone would do for me. It’s not worth dealing with.

Oh, no worries, I’m sorry if you thought I included you in that.

No, I was strictly responding to @taviq, whether he’s trolling or not is left to be seen.

The times have definitely change ed, but I guess it was only a matter of time . What you’re talking about isn’t gone, Stevie, but there is certainly an overwhelming amount of people collecting certain pieces and hating on the rest. And strictly from a sense of status perspective where it’s no longer for the love of the toy but for what it represents, and yeah, that’s sad to us. Then because it goes hand in hand that they then must show it off by posting a picture online, so the internet has become flooded with these types. The tried and true just doesn’t seem as big in comparison because we don’t feel the need to have dick measuring contests all the time like these folks do with their clout.

The only true positives are that regardless of the reason people buy, at least people are buying, allowing soft vinyl toys and their creators to continue on. Which means more sofvi for collectors to choose from as well.

It is disheartening when those in the limelight don’t seem to measure up to their hype and those too that start making with a pretty obvious strategy of trying to undermine the scene ... There must be a ceiling at some point (I just hope some can remain affordable).

It's frustrating because the attitude of I'll pay ridiculous money for something if it's ridiculously rare even if I don't actually like it isn't uncommon and it creates so many shitty things in this hobby. Lots of artists obviously inflate prices and decrease quantity because that is what people chase after. That is the opposite of what we need. The guys/girls keeping prices fair and numbers in double digits should be rewarded for doing that, not punished by speculators and people chasing toys like they are three-legged buffalo nickles. I know a handful of artists who stopped doing pre-orders and open runs for this exact reason. Making toys easy to get somehow lessens their brand in the eyes of collectors like this. That is a damn shame. This new toy is a perfect example. Stupid price tag out of the gate, giving so little information that it creates an aura of mystery around the toy and the creator, shitty rules for even trying to enter the lottery. That is exactly what these type of collectors create. They are just as responsible for this toy and how it was sold as the creator is.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that SB has given up on M1/Bullmark/Marusan/Gargamel/RxH/the good stuff - it's just that the scene has become saturated with all of these fools trying to make a quick buck off imitation toys. It's gotten to the stage where people don't really want to discuss the 'good stuff' here to keep the vultures at bay.

Or maybe we are just out of touch here at SB.. I mean these comments on this fuckhead's instagram suggest that we really "missed the boat" on this one..

    "Cool toy of the year"
"Longest 7 days!! Good luck to all awesome diehards collectors here."
    "Best hair style of 2018!"
"Pls!!! Make it enough for every cool collectors who 100% in love with SeaHead!"
    "I need it!!! Please!!!!"
"This is one of the creations just cant miss it in life! Really looking forward to m"

I guess we just don't know awesome sofubi when we see it around this place...

I agree and I wasn't really talking about SB in general. That is why the one guy here saying he was going to refuse payment for his lotto win because he thinks too many people won seemed so out of place on SB.

Man, this place gets so hostile so quick. Look, I think the questions I'm asking are valid. Whether lots of people won this lotto. If this is a preorder or a huge number I think that's something the buyer has a right to know. And circumstances regarding money can change fast.
I DO know not to enter Lotterys I can't afford. I've never knowingly skipped out on paying when I've won. (Though I've discovered some in my junk mail I missed.)
@boonvelvet your she headless horseman was my first buy at sdcc a couple years back. I'm looking forward to your future pieces but comeon, I don't need to be treated like an asshole

@taviq if this was an Elegab lottery or something and you piked out - that's a problem because Elegab is a nice guy who makes great toys.

I don't think anybody would miss a beat if you piked on this motherfucker who lied about being Japanese and faked an open pre-order as a lottery. Fuck him - you'll only be blacklisted from his list. Do you really want to support a guy like this in the future anyway?
