I think the actual sculpt is pretty damn impressive, and I love the play on words with the name, but I can’t quite say I like it as a toy. I find this one to be a little overly textured, which makes anything outside of an anatomy - like, detailed paint to be lackluster.

I also still think it’s wild so many of these new toy makers, dare I say “artists”, are releasing their first toys, made in China(only mentioning for the sake of cheaper factory costs), and yet, they’re charging between $120 to $500 per release. Newjacks, no prior workings or built up fanbase, and they’re holding lottos, just to [in my opinion] embarrassingly put remainders up on a site or sell by DM.

Of course its all about personal taste, but I was referring much more to the paint application than anything else. The sculpt is fine, but to me it screams total rip off Kumon / MVH / Pushead.

I'm just not a fan of this new trend of gaudy 'Technicolor Yawn' style paint apps. It just looks like a kid painted it with poster paints, to me. Or put paint in their mouth and spat at the toy multiple times. Just because you say you're a customiser or painter doesn't make you a good one.

These people don't understand the term 'less is more' clearly, but still collectors with deep pockets are falling over themselves to score these puke covered toys, so I'm obviously out of the loop.

A recent example of the kind of paint apps I'm talking about. IMO it looks tacky, cheap and has no class. There, i said it.

This just popped up in my Facebook feed.. it's not really Skullbrain material but I'm sure most of us spent the last 15 years reading Juxtapoz anyway.

Ron English does it again (and again and again and again)... this is a terrible mash-up

^^ Wow, 'Bottom of the Barrel' scraping has commenced aka 'Paying the Mortgage'. Why not just add some X's for eyes? Oh, sorry, that's another 'Artist' isn't it. My mistake.

    Fucking lazy shite.

The fact that the anatomy of the skull NEVER corresponds to the head irks the shit out of me.

Ron English is the poor man’s Kaws when it comes to toys in the sense, that, all he does is take something pop culture related, practically change nothing about it, then slap some stupid ass trademark “artistry” on it. In this case, that shit eating, godawful skeleton “grin.” I think his actual artwork is incredible, but his toys have always been derivative trash to me.

Can we start a “Fuck Ron English” thread? I have SO many negative things I want to say about his fucking toys.

Feels like he's been releasing the same toy since I've started collecting vinyl toys about 10 years ago. I never liked anything with the "Grin" back then, and it's only gotten worse.

Heh, i still have a GID Ronnnie Rabbit and two MC Supersized from back in the day. That's the best it ever got, it was all downhill from there, when it comes to his toys.

Maybe American Depress on its own wasn't so bad I think, but it's just tiring at this point. He is still hitting us on the head with the same message, and it's not even a little subtle.

Also, i forgot about the original sunflower (without spongebob or the skull). Then again, that was also a very high price for more uninspired design. I think they were $500.

I was chuckling to myself about how the horrendousness of his toys has become kind of a running gag here, then realized I own that very same Rabbbit...

Mark Nagata enjoys any paint job as long as he is cool with the “artist”. He will also paint any toy is what I’ve gathered from his IG.

I find myself hating the vast majority of metal related toys.

It is a shame McCready is all tied up with his own issues.

I feel like this existed, but all I could find with a cursory search was this, which was - for better or worse - not far off based on the direction it took:

Phew, the less said about that stinker the better. I thought it was more of an art piece than an actual toy, and in my opinion, not much of an art piece either.

I suppose if people in the toy industry keep giving you opportunities to make toys (with minimum effort on your part) and collectors keep buying them, why would you derail that train. I actually think Ron is a damn fine painter, and I used to respect Kaws back in the day but nowadays they are interchangable. Its lazy shit, gentlemen. Have some fucking pride in your work.

The only two Kaws toys I think are worth owning are the original Companion and the Kaws Kun. The 5YL Companion is alright, but there isn’t as much personality to the chacarter for me with that iteration.

I lost respect for Kaws as an artist when he was lashing out and bitching at Jason Freeny, an artist who’s known for splitting toys in half and customizing them with his own very detailed and original bone/anatomy, for doing his take on a Dissected Companion. Kaws was upset that Freeny was getting recognition “off of the backs of other artists(something to that effect).” But that’s literally Kaws’ entire career. Coming from a dude that sells hundred thousand dollar paintings of Spongebob and The Simpsons with X’s on the eyes, that’s real fuckin’ rich.

Where the fuck did that happen? I wanna troll that douche bag now. I’ve met Freeny a few times and he is super nice plus talented.

Yeah, i missed that at the time as well. I remember reading a Clutter magazine article where Freeny hinted at some people getting pissy about his dissection work, i assume he was talking about Kaws and the like. I'm pretty sure he didn't name any names in the article.

It was on Freeny’s IG page. Maybe two years ago? The post all of the craziness was on was deleted, I think. But I saw a few of Brian’s comments, and Freeny’s replies. Obviously Freeny hasn’t at all stopped since!
