Step 1: Find obscure vintage toy.
Step 2: Create new vinyl toy based on said vintage toy.
Step 3: Sell toy via lottery at reasonable numbers.
Step 4: Increase complexity of toy/paint and reduce production numbers.
Step 5: Increase complexity and ambiguity of lottery system.
Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 (optional: add new toy sculpts) until people break out the pitchforks and torches, or prostrate themselves before you.

    Pretty simple, really.

Pretty happy to be absent from IG and this board recently based on all of the above.

Awww, well we miss you Jared, and there are still some decent non-toxic discussions going on here and there (though admittedly, they do take some digging).

Is this the first time we have seen a contemporary sofubi maker in one of these fancy auctions? I don't pay too much attention to them but I've only ever seen Kaws, KR, etc.

    Here are the actual listings:

    https://www.phillips.com/auctions/auction/HK010418
    https://www.phillips.com/detail/HXS/HK010418/76
    https://www.phillips.com/detail/HXS/HK010418/75

(does this come underneath the 'don't post an active lottery rule? I mean anyone who is up for participating in this auction probably isn't too fussed about keeping the bids low..)

No, this same auction house actually held multiple auctions with a large number of 'new sofubi' figures about 10 years ago. You can see the discussion if you search for Phillips De Pury on this board. The prices were similarly absurd, a particular offender being the Secret Base chrome figure set, which sold for £4,000 (about $5,250 today).

Anyone go for the book? I wanted to try for a copy but had too many other things to take care of. The photos I have seen are all very nice, was curious if PM Ken did the photos?

New HXS flyer is pretty cool.

As for the high end dolls in auctions, maybe a minority opinion; these items lack charm and style of the first years worth of CKA releases.

There was a mysterious nature to them and in that time very little hype. Plus the retail was the polar opposite of these "deep pockets" efforts.

Even if I had the dough to get any of them, honestly would pass and drop the coins on HXS earlier releases. The Omake were so great.

Good for him though, to do as he wants, and certainly a "deep pockets" fan will be thrilled to throw down for any of them. Or will they?

I like the book it takes stabs at being a both a gallery expose and also helping to bike some fun imagery for the hxs lore it’s kind of the best of both those worlds in one book. I wish there has been some killer battle shots in it but other then that I dug it

Seems to me he has kind of painted himself into a corner, with his top priority being the perceived value. Shame, as he is one of the best to have ever done it, and operating his own factory could be one of the guys doing stuff like Dennis, doing open orders and tons of marble runs at reasonable prices for the real fans who are in it for his toys. Now he’s in a situation where he constantly has to limit his work and find ways to price and sell that will keep perception and prices peeked. I sold off all my hirota earlier this year, same reason I sold off my nags, it’s impossible to collect unless you want to play their game of inflating their ego and prices. Well I did keep the first CKA gorilla ju, that’s a hard one to part with, though it does leave me with a sour taste in my mouth these days too.

Best memories of being the only bidder on a Standard Camo Zagoran from a Phillips auction. Paid a cool $300USD and had the help of the extremely talented JoeMan ^^^ to post it to me while I was living in Australia. Yay for fun and good toy stories!
