Yeah I’m just gonna step back. Should have just kept my opinions to myself and not posted at all.

    Sorry guys.

Just to be clear, I don’t have any issues with anyone. Don’t have any issues with skull brain as
    a whole.

Rather just talk with you guys in person at a show or convention than through text on a board. Seems it gets twisted more than I mean it to.

To be clear though my original post was more about who cares and let artist work with what ever medium or brand they want to. But that spinned out of control fast and I dont want to be the cause of a derial in this conversation.

    Carry on.

Don't pussy out @Rich ! Stand by whatever opinions you personally have.

It's honestly a shame that Clutter didn't invite more artists to participate in this. I would have been all over it if guys like MVH, CAST, Splurrt, Paul Kaiju were involved - more variety would have made for a very cool series.

That’s the lamest shit anyone can say. I rather just not come here and cause any issues.
It’s not being a pussy it’s just trying to be respectful to others.

Is it really? I thought self-censoring is just a tad teeny tiny little bit more lame

I’m not personally bothered by this at all. These are all great artists, and if I collected these toys I’d be pumped about em. I didn’t know sofubi people frowned on western vinyl until I joined this board. I just figured I never really liked it, but it didn’t matter cuz I’m not really their demographic. That being said if my favorite artist Michael (draculazer) did some, I’d prolly still snatch em up!

Who's the guy doing MMA shit? I was just trying to be supportive.. but I guess you read it in the voice of Conor McGregor cutting a promo? It's always interesting to read the opinions of the guys at the forefront of the sofubi scene here - just trying to encourage you to post what you want and not 'take it back' a few posts down the line.

@Rich Definitely don’t keep opinions to yourself, dude. I just read your initial statement as you not liking opinions about the new KR stuff being expressed at all, but I clearly read into that wrong, which is my apologies. Even if you would’ve highly disagreed with the opinions, I’m all for welcoming that. That’s what the discussions should be, but kept civil, of course.

Text is easy to misconstrue, which is why I have zero issue owning up to mine with your initial comment about the thread. I don’t think the intended vocalizing who cares and artists/chosen mediums was lost. Keep the conversation going. I think this is one that bridges quite a bit between Skullbrain and the KR forum. But this place has always been heavily critical, dare I even say praised for it at times.

@Waterbear In short, fantastic points, dude. You pretty much embodied my whole collecting history and how I even came into sofubi and Skullbrain. Hell, I’d wager some of the street figures I love most would be considered “urban vinyl(puke)” by the average designer vinyl collector, and that’s not a bad thing. It creates dialogue!!!

I'm pretty sure Bwana's are these snake arm guys. I like the recognizable Bwana goofiness in the design, but the paint job... :( And just to be clear, it's that the paint has that stamped-on look, which I think is pretty unavoidable on [expletive deleted].

Nope I don’t do that “MMA shit” I fight Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. No striking just grappling and submissions, also which I never brought up, so I don’t get why you even brought that up to begin with. And I don’t like Connor at all. Your showing your ignorance in trying to insult me yet again.. which is twice now. I don’t get how you can call me a pussy than immediately toss out a compliment as if it’s gonna mask an insult. What ever makes you happy...

I have no reason to back peddle. I took it down because obviously it was taken wrong and a few posts only added to the confusion and grew argumentative which was never my intention. I kept up what made sense and send a DM to the person who I felt I needed to contact directly.

All that said no hard feelings man. We good we good.

It’s all good man, no worries. Obviously what I said and what I meant didn’t come out right because your not the only one who read it that why. So I fucked up, and just pulled it, and left the last post that pretty much sums up my opinions without any of my nonsense. However if anyone really wants to read what I said I screen captured the comments for posterity.

I’ll just take a seat though, I’m cool with just lurking again and keeping my mouth shut. Opinions change and so do arguments. I rather just focus on trying to add to the community in ways I can rather than words on a message board I seem to trip over. I’m better at that, lol. And I’d much rather see you in person and talk like we usually do when we can. Much more fun that way :)

That would be a shame. Just because some people don't understand or acknowledge that popular toy makers get just as much hate as they do love and it can be brutal to deal with on a regular basis doesn't mean you should walk away from skullbrain. Sought after artists don't talk about it because it would probably come off as just not being grateful but there is a constant negativity that comes with that popularity.

I have handled lottos for a couple of really popular toy people many times and it's awful. For every genuine fan who appreciates the work you get a dickhead who will lie, cheat and steal to get their hands on a fucking toy. Everything from straight up begging and giving you sob stories ripped from the lifetime network to offering you triple the actual price then openly talking shit about you because you declined the offer. Plus the straight up scams where they claim things didn't get delivered and when you show proof they change the story to say it was damaged in transit. And of course everybody hates paying the steep shipping cost you have to use to thwart the scams. It makes it incredibly difficult to be open and honest and appreciative with fans online. In person it's way easier because you can see who likes the toy and have a genuine interaction instead of just reading what someone typed.

I've known several people who make popular toys that avoid any interaction on SB and for the most part on IG too, not because they don't want to share their opinions and ideas but because they don't want to let assholes change how they see fans and toy collectors in general. Not knowing when online people actually give a damn about you or if they just want your toys to show off or even profit from makes it really easy to question people's motives. It's an actual thing and a shitty problem but no one ever talks about because they would most likely just get insulted for complaining about it all.

Dude, you couldn’t have said this any better. To be honest though this is what I signed up for in the career I chose so it’s better to keep all that stuff to myself, and most artist feel the same. But man o man since you have seen it first hand you see just what it is. Now image dealing with that then coming here to make a comment and getting that same type of reaction on an open forum ( not saying that’s what happened in this case but alsways the fear that it can). I’m a person too and make shitty mistakes also, but since I’m a maker I’m held to a higher standard where everything I say is taken to task. So it just became and I feel still is better to just read and keep my opinions to myself most of the time.

I think this discussion is veering a little off track - which is fine - but let's try and keep all the personal stuff out of it, okay? People are always free to post about toys; you hate it, you like it, whatever, but that is not the case about referring to other people. Making some valid criticism against toys you happen to not dig is cool, but also don't just come to spout pointless negativity. And if it is not toy-related, targeted at individuals because you've got some beef, take it elsewhere.

Re: platforms. If the exposure of these artists to an otherwise unknowing populace brings them attention to their full range of handcrafted, creative, and very deserving wares, helps them support themselves and maybe even introduces others to a broader world of art/toys, and it is a choice that they all undertook happily and willingly, then I am all for it.

And as always, people who don't like these can happily ignore Dunies as they have likely always done.

I think collectors have tended to deify sofubi makers and elevate the toys "above it all" over the last decade. But that has been in collectors' minds. In general, toy makers want to sell their stuff and become well known. This "urban vinyl vs. sofubi toys" divide is not a real thing. It's something a few collectors came up with around 2005-06, and it stuck. It also alienated a lot of western toy collectors who found themselves unwelcome when they tried to branch into sofubi. That probably hurt the chances of some sofubi designers to branch out.

This new series (and a ton of crossover figures and gallery shows over the years) shows that it was always an invented divide which, basically, tried to make sofubi toys seem more elite or precious. There have always been great artists working with all the platforms.

Practically all the Sofubi i admire the most comes from Japanese TV, Film and Manga. Or directly inspired by it.

Sofubi to me has always meant -made in Japan by Japanese people. Of course there are a few Gaijin who, because of their talent and awesomeness as artists, are an exception to that. But overall, even if a non-Japanese maker has their work produced in Japan, I still don't really think of it as Sofubi.

    Maybe that's wrong of me.
