But how many other hyped toys are getting photo-shopped videos on IG? Huh?

It's so dumb how people interested in winning the most overpopulated lotteries in the history of the hobby want to stand out from the crowd. Everyone knows the selection process is fair and random anyway

It's silly. Do they really think Hirota is spending hours and hours reviewing hundreds of entries manually, let alone selectively picking only those who kiss the most ass? I'd assume the most work that artists do when asking for your IG is if they don't know you and they pick you they do a quick check to make sure you are a toy collector in general but that is about it.

I wouldn't know, but someone makes the call on who to pick, and it generally isn't a random process. So people are doing whatever they can think of.

It's not unique to Hirota or even toys. A hiring manager has 400 very competitive CVs on their desk and can barely differentiate between the top 20 candidates. The one who gets hired just has something somewhere in there that stuck in the right person's head. What's unusual is to see people trying to prove they're worth taking money from, not giving it to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't know about that. The HxS fanbase IMO seems to be the most sycophantic. Out of all the hype makers out there I see a shitload more reposts, bad photoshops and floods of their HxS collections that coincide with a lotto. Hell, I honestly never even saw a Mr. X-Man on IG at all until this past lotto. Suddenly my feed is filled with shitty photoshops from Chinese collectors begging. It just strikes me as kinda gross and a little desperate is all

I remember the days when you wouldn't shout lottery details from the rooftops by posting how thirsty you are on Instagram as an "extra" to your entry

    BINGO!

The influx is quite silly. The idea that this will somehow give you an edge is laughable.

In general, everyone has talked about the latest HxS lottery but nobody has put the photos, I know some will say, so if everything is on IG, but in the end the thread is about sharing images and information. That this last set of HxS is expensive, yes it is true but I do not think that this trend of high prices goes back, it is something that you have to deal if you intend to collect this line. If I agree with the reatil prices that HxS it´s given to the pieces? No I'm not, but I do not agree either to stigmatize all the HxS collectors like some kind of snobber who just got on the Hype train, because here on the board there are real fans who love the HxS work from day one.

I took way too much pleasure in commenting "Dm NOT sent - price is crazy" on the instagram post to the man himself.. too bad it got buried amongst 150 comments sucking Hirota's asshole

No luck for me. maybe I can win someday...

    but

Now that the winners are announced, I can talk about what I think, without being called a brown nosing hype train maniac.

I LOVE the new Mr X Andro planet alien army beast set.

    The Good:

How can you not love the classic stretch armstrong head on a cool masters of the universe style body? not only that, he has fists that are covered with cool boxers hand wraps, he has a classic vintage cape! and to put a cherry on top he has a wrestler chapionship belt! the figure is too cool, to be true.

next, the ultraman head alien. I am sure there are plenty of ultrman fans here so no praising needed. Ultraman done in Hirota style, this one is a no brainer.

Finally the new demon horn Roswell alien with awesome lips. The mouth on this dude says it all. his facial expression is priceless, and the colors of the new dudes are just mind blowing good.

The bad : Yes, I hate the filthy rich brown nosing manics but let us not hate the art itself.

The price : I would of had gladly put hundreds of dollars debt on my credit card if I had won the set,

I’m stoked you won! I personally think it’s a pretty defining line between collectors that are genuine fans(of anything, really) and who’s just trying to show off and flex to make others jealous.

but other than other toy collectors, who would be jealous of a room filled with toys?
I know my students just think I'm a weirdo and my family thinks I'm wasting my money.

Who cares about family, other toy collectors are the only people who really care about you. We'd care more if you won though.

Funnily enough, I’ve had a good handful of people who don’t understand/like the hobby, but are genuinely jealous of me, and others, having something I’m so passionate about and have fun with. Plenty others think I’m a weirdo, but these are also people that collect records or clothing or shoes, etc. Toys honestly don’t have to make sense or appeal to anyone but me!

How can you tell when someone is showing off vs. when someone genuinely loves something ? This is the general “you” question.

I would have to think everyone has to like these toys at some point that continue to buy despite what ever.

Literally every maker has fans, and people that dislike them. The fans keep collecting and the people who dislike them will come up with any excuse they can think of as to why anyone collects that brand, usually it ends up in the “ well it’s just the hypz” category... I don’t know anymore. After a decade or this argument I just can’t get behind it anymore.

The IG post blitz during lotteies can get crazy, but every maker has fans that do this in one way or another and I just ignore it if I don’t like it for a day or two. Sometimes it even helps me notice something I may have not though. Maybe not as blatant as the HxS drops, but I’ve seen it with every in demand maker in one way or the other. They might not do it during every lottery, but they will take photos and show off their collection in a way they feel fit. What’s the difference? Both show the maker they have people collecting and enjoying their toys in how they feel is how they collect.

I don’t know. I just don’t see people doing this over and over to win toys to stock pile them to flex on the “gram” because that is the weirdest most niche flex of all time.

Maybe I’m in my happy old man accepting everyone stage of life ...

There's a third category of fans - those who dig the toys but can't justify paying $400+ for three minis or $800 for a standard size hunk of vinyl. As cool as the designs are - a lot of us can't justify dumping that kind of cash into a single release.

Not too sure what you mean here - I feel like I'm making a point you're already aware of here... I mean the biggest most obvious difference between instagramming a lottery post vs a shot of the toy in your own collection as a flex is that by flooding instagram with re-posts of an active lottery then it kind of diminishes everybody's chances at scoring the actual toy. The only reason why these newjacks repost lotteries is to signal "hey i'm cool, i'm into that sofubi life and i'm into that totally radical new toy that you like, see I like it too! so i must be cool too right? right???"

I guess because you and some others don’t feel the prices are good for you, these makers should just lowere their prices ?

Your opinion on why it’s too expensive for you is only your opinion.

Do you think your comment in the HxS IG post made a single bit of difference to anyone esp Hirota ? It’s selfish to think that because you don’t feel like it’s worth the price the maker has to cater to you. Esp when his prices rise and justfity the price. Maybe a lot can’t, but it’s obvious a whole lot more do.

New jacks posting for fame about that sofubi life to prove they are cool Vs. seasoned hardened toy collecting vets that are tired of these bastards fucking up their chances to win a toy they are mad about because the price is now way to high and they wouldn’t buy anyways...

    Is this right ?

@Rich you really have to stop taking things so personally man! It's bad for your health ;)

Not at all - the worst thing an artist can do is lower prices after setting a standard (which I have mentioned before in discussions) - if anything they are going to run into a little trouble eventually when the bottom falls out. The current popularity of these toys can't sustain itself much longer. And don't take it personally, this isn't directed solely at you.

Bro you're taking things way out of hand here - as if I would expect any real result from my post. I do however think it would have been refreshing for him to read something other than than "Want! Need!" x 100 times

Spoken like a true sofvi maker who is living the high life after jacking his prices up... Sorry Rich, but that is a direct stab at you. That sentence alone shows how you don't appreciate all of your fans.. maybe you just appreciate the fans that can line your pockets with sweet cash??

And no, I don't mean you should lower your prices to rectify the situation. I'm just saying some makers got greedy when the popularity spiked and pumped up the retail price. Doing that is good in the short-term but in the long-run it's going to bite you in the ass.

I feel like sometimes the fan IG postings that coincide with a lottery are more as part of a thought process by the fan that there is an "application" aspect to add influence rather than entering a true lottery. Like to the show-off idea: Sure maybe that is a deterrent to some artists, could be influential to others or maybe it has no impact at all on the outcome.

For the most part it is genuinely valid criticism here on Skullbrain by true fans that maybe never won a lottery for the artist and maybe don't stand a chance because of rise in popularity but doesn't mean they are dislikers.

Luckily for this next release (the Fink) I'm going to drop a bombshell of an ass kiss on Mr. Hirota-san so just prepare yourselves! LOL (just kidding)

Nope - totally incorrect! If they can't afford it then why would they care? Oh wait... things aren't so black & white are they Rich? I couldn't give a fuck about missing HxS releases at these prices - however I do feel bad for my friends who do enter these lotteries an get drowned out by 500 hypebeast entries.

    Dude fuuuuuuccckkk you !

I swear every time I post here you come along and pull some shit.

I don’t appreciate my fans, fuck off. Everyone of my fans damn well knows how much I put into my work and all to do my best by them.

I literally have sales of all price ranges from sludgie up the toys like berserker.

Every fucking time I post you turn this shit on me no matter where I post.

God damn can I ever talk about anything at all or do I just have to assume at some point it’s gonna be somehow pointed on me?

I think Rich’ comments were based on the subject content of this thread title. I’m referencing his brand/work in response seems silly. Yes we know he is a toy maker. Can’t he have an opinion as a collector( which he started out as and still is) without someone responding and using MVH as a example to try and validate your point? We all aren’t ever going to agree one way or another. I personally have seen a decline over the years of artists contributing to the board. I think it’s nice to see Rich, Rampage, Joe, Paul post and give some insight here and there. Hell the how to paint with v color thread is damn near constructed by those listed above.
