i think everything is derived or inspired by past works but when new players come into the game so abruptly it gets you thinking about who theyre deriving their work from

Yeah, it is hard to see these sorts of toys as 'ripoffs' when so many of them have their original sources as bootlegs/model kits/manga, header, or poster art/etc., but certainly it is a pretty obvious attempt to ride on popular coattails, for a likely easy or safe cash in on a first attempt vinyl figure. I mean, sure I can understand it is a safer business model in what is otherwise actually very risky (something I am sure other folks from the board can speak to from experience) but ultimately the lack of creativity in coming up with something, not necessarily original, but at least what hasn't been 'done' before [in the medium] is, I think, more of a negative than any sort of benefit it confers. Personal opinion I suppose, but it is sort of an artistic copout (not to mention a bit of the annoying 'oh I was on to all this before it was cool' mentality) to claim your work was inspired by xxxxxx original source, versus the contemporary thing it is sitting directly next to. [You can apply this to any medium; literature, architecture, painting, cooking, fashion, sculpture, film - it amounts to the same thing.] This is especially true when it is a full on repro as such, versus a careful and skilled selection of inspirational elements, aesthetically incorporated or re-envisioned into a new format.

But it's art (in a manner of speaking), so this will all be subjective.

Too much of a coincidence? A new maker just surfaced at this time and their "new" project is based off this robot as well

Maybe this is the final evolution of toys. Everyone has reached the same peak and this bland robot is it.

I would assume that's the same guy. One account has "SAMSON" in the bio, the other "SAMSON_2019JAPAN". It boggles the mind how people are scrambling over who gets to suck his nuts first...

How does this happen over and over ?

I see being in the same vein, but Jesus this is just out of control.

Is there a design schedule with schematics that I didn’t get during my last Illuminati toy makers conference ?

The OG battery-op model kit is from the 60's .Midori is long out of business.
I went for these kits a few times and always lost, but I'm more into the weird drill tanks and spaceships.
I would have probably went for a half ass built up to restore. But they never show up. Mint in box mostly.
They were super cheap in the day as such mechanical plamodels at the time were sold as "educational" with a super cheap price point, so built up then usually trashed, hence the rarity.
Maybe some of these makers had the model as a kid and it's paying homage.

    Thanks Paul.

There are also the little Kaizo judo minis, which admittedly I find charming in their cheap toy aesthetic. But the reality is people are just riding the HxS coat tails and probably chose this one because it was an existing homage they didn’t need a license for and could claim they were also using the original model as inspiration too.

As with most things, I am out of the loop regarding Planet X Asia. What are the issues that people have with them?

Nothing besides several people here just not liking their designs and the frequency of new toys being released. The abundance of 3D sculpted stuff and the fact they produce in China rubs lots of people the wrong way too.

They did go after another small toy company publicly who was using the same factory but secretly fishing other toy makers rejects and test pieces from the fucking trash cans to build other people's toys and sell them on auction sites. So that pissed off people loyal to the guys who were stealing shit. Which is just stupid.

The guy who runs the Planet X Asia brand is a sweetheart. So even though I don't collect what they make it's still cool to see his stuff out in the wild.

Based on this book i bought on vintage robot toys :

HxS's Brutal A robot is most certainly inspired by this vintage kit "Black Ace"

While the new fellow everyone is trying to do is "Samson" (that explains the nick for the new ig players)
