The first of the eight doses out there in the world is waiting in yr inbox, ser. Not nearly so satisfying as the actual floppy, sure, but I'm sure your monitor will be delighted and enlightened.

Anyone else care to have a look? The first one's free!

Excellent, much appreciated good sir. While, yes, I do prefer still having hard copies of things when it comes to books, comics, etc. (even, gasp!, movies) this is certainly incredibly better than not being able to check through this nice work at all.

I was actually just checking here to see if anyone was talking about Papergirls, I just picked up vol 1 after a very long break from reading comics and I'm really enjoying it. Picked up Vol 2 over the weekend but haven't had a chance to start it yet. I've heard good things about Saga but I flipped though it once and it didn't seem appealing. Is it worth giving it a real shot?

Totally yes. Same writer as PG, as you know, and it's just as planned out yet natural in feel. Actually, as is the case is most of the best team-built books, the visual writing is just as strong as the typed out bones, with both authors working together to make a most engaging and well told tale. Most libraries seem to be keeping up with the trades, so I'd say borrow the first one for free and see if you aren't cuing up immediately for volume two once you've breezed through the first six issues.

It's actually a great time to catch up on both series, as the Saga team are just about at the end of taking a year off from the book - us loyalists are patiently waiting for issue 55 to appear some time before 2020 hits - and Paper Girls' final issue is due to hit the stands at the end of next month.

Yes, go for it. I just found the 6th TPB last weekend. I've read the first three so far and I really like it a lot. Its a very creative and confidently made comic, I feel in safe hands when I read it, at no point am I let down in any way. Similar to the feeling I get when I read 'Finder' by Carla Speed McNeil. There's depth to the worlds they build and it engrosses you.

can’t recommend saga enough! and it’s been in a bit of a hiatus for the past year, so it’s a great time to catch up.

paper girls has been a fun read. one more issue to go! it’ll be a 30 issue run, so it’s a pretty quick read with a story that keeps moving.

also, i’ve already recommended it, but immortal hulk!! holy fuck!

    a few more recommendations:
-2017 mister miracle 12issue run by tom king
-2015 vision 12issue run by tom king
-2016 moon knight 14issue run by jeff lemire. need a bit of moon knight’s background before reading, so start with ellis’ run which is a good time
-x-statix (starts with x-force 116-129 then continues into x-statix 1-26, and if you like what you read x-statix presents: deadgirl 1-5). by peter milligan and art by mike allred!!

@RyanM - I think if it were going to be August then we would have seen pre-sale information on the site and elsewhere. They're putting out that massive paperback at the end of September, so I can't imagine that they'll start in with new issues before that happens. Who know, perhaps a year off meant a year off from anything to do with the book! Who knows if they've even gotten back to work on it yet, y'know.

Plenty o' comix to read in the meantime, though. Suggestion of the day ? The Dregs from Black Mask Studios.

I loved x-statix when it came out. Awesome characters, writing and art. I'll check out paper girls.

    Beto needs some love, too.

I'm pleased to see X-Statix being brought up here, as I've been meaning to ask about it. See, I completely missed it while it was happening, only just discovering its existence embarrassingly recently. I've pretty much ignored all X books since the later '80s*, but fell in love with Allred back in '89 - Graphique Musique, anyone? - and became a Milligan lifer** not too long after. The fact that I had no idea that the two had paired up for a lengthy run really speaks to the horse blinders I must have had on to the majors on the racks back then, frequenter of the shops that I was. Anyway, I now consider the series fully endorsed, thanks, guys! Kicking myself now for skipping a decently priced swing on the 'Bay at the omnibus a couple of week ago. Ah well, on the radar now!

Related: Through the magic of interlibrary loan I now get to slowly work my way through the Claremont years, via lapkilling omnibuses, free of charge! It's been forever and I'm pretty sure that I've never actually taken in the whole of 'em. I'm hoping to get reacquainted with the Brood by late August. Summer fun.

    * Any other recommendations? Typical me I've got Morrison covered, finally, but my only other modern X read was scratching my head through the first couple of Whedon arcs somewhere in the middle aughts.
** That said, I just read through his recent take on The Prisoner and found myself somewhere in between underwhelmed and actually disappointed. Best thing about it, sad to say, was the Kirby art on the variant cover of issue 1 that I found in the dollar bin. Oh well.

WALKING DEAD 193? I love it. No resolution (hopefully) I've followed this since it's inception and like how it's just randomly ending out of no where. It's fitting how unpredictable...I almost wish Saga never returns.

Another something that I was late to the party on is James Stokoe's absolutely spectacular Godzilla: The Half Century War. I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't given it a read, and if you were having a look back in '13 consider me jealous!

The copy that I got my hands on was from my local library, and I liked it so much that I immediately went looking for a collection to buy. Turns out both the trade and the wonderfully oversized hardcover are out of print, and folk are asking absolutely rude prices for them all over the net; like in the hundreds of dollars range. Eeesh. I mention the last bit in part because I just found a source for the hardback at cover price...

Anybody looking to pick one up? Forty bucks, less a little bit if you bite before the 4th is over thanks to a coupon. Message me for details if you're interested, maybe we can get a group order going?

There's always the option of reading it for free, too.

I'd probably be in for this. The artwork looks great, so if the remainder of the collection as good, I am down for some Goji reading anytime.

EDIT: i just checked the price on my local Amazon, and it is very much eeeep! Shame when this happens, especially for things relatively new and mass-produced. I suppose the market is the market. Le sigh.

As someone who has been following James Stokoe for years, I can say the story is AS awesome as the art itself. Secondly, he recently released an art book through Dark Horse called Grunt, which is no longer available directly from Amazon. This tends to be an early indicator of OOP status. Buy it now or cry!

EDIT: It's available again, but still, get it!

Agreed, Half Century is easily the finest example of affecting storytelling in any Godzilla pamphlets that I've read. That Canadian really knows how to spin the yarn! I'd say the same for his Alien franchise book, Aliens: Dead Orbit, but I've read far fewer tales from that long lasting endeavor to compare it against. Let's just say it rules, too.

    ^ A Xeno-free page.

I landed a copy of Grunt for a song a few weeks back, and one of the reasons that I was excited for the arrival was getting some sweet, sweet Goji pages... but as I was telling a friend last night, the book has everything but Japanese monstas in it! Must be the same licensing issues that're keeping the IDW collections out of print. Curse you, Toho!

It's probably a Toho thing; there's no reason IDW wouldn't want to do second prints and pick up all that money.
I enjoyed the Aliens: Dead Orbit mini, but really loved Wonton Soup and his Avengers one-shot from a few years ago.

In sort of homage/memoriam to the all-but-in-name-only loss of MAD magazine, I offer a humble look back, via Peter Gzowski and MAD's original and continuing publisher, William Gaines.

(sorry, I can't link these together, but full article here)

Very sorry to see it go. MAD was an integral part of growing up. Sure, it had it's ups and downs, but even non-readers can easily identify things which came out of its pages. Those amazing things MAD produced will always be keystones of pop culture through the latter half of the 20th century. Sadly, it lost its place, as many other print media did, in this new digital era; for that I am saddened but also grateful I got to experience it when I did. Thanks for the memories, all you amazing creatives who were involved!

A [likely less than?] classic Feldstein cover I remember.

The art book is great! I have been a fan of his since the Wonton soup days and I can’t say enough how happy I was to see him get some recognition for his art by getting this dark horse book. In addition to half century war they did an oversize of his Godzilla in hell issue. Plus let us not forget his image book Orc Stain... so good.
