Why do you say that? Is it huge and costs over a grand? I kid I kid (sort of)

That thing has so many bad things going against it: the weird ass arm that looks like it came from another toy, the facial hair, the gorilla feet, the scrotum chest...but Groman's stuff I think is much more well thought out.

I hope the people that make that figure get dissolved into skeletons by the real Hedorah.

But, but, but..... it's got a third eye people! That is just so, like, amazing and deep, man. This is clearly some incredibly thought out, completely original toy sculpt. Unique and inspired. I bet the backstory alone is worth exploring in a novel. Probably worthy of something around the 500$ mark if you ask me.

This thing was brought to my attention by a friend. Initially I just assumed it was a licensed rendition of Hedorah, and liked it at first appearance. Didn’t even look at the actual post. It was swiftly followed by some criticism, as well as revealing it was basically a rip off, which led me to actually inspect the photos. It’s executed well in terms of its sculpt, but the fact that it has a third eye, Matango legs, Bear Model Hedorah arms, and a goddamn Matango sculpted into the chest, it’s just trying too hard. Way too hard. But not hard enough to not just look like an asshole ripped off Toho.

That fact seems to of been completely ignored by certain hedorah collector's on FB. I get the feeling a lot of them don't care about that kind of stuff.

@The Moog There’s a fine line that’s walked between pachi and ripping off, I’ve come to find. Thin, but discernible. This is blatantly ripping off, and quite frankly, disrespectful to a certain extent. Not only to just take a design and run with it without permission, but to also sculpt a direct likeness of another character into its body for reasons I don’t even care to know.

Yes, i find the whole subject very interesting. I assumed a lot of Pachi toys avoided that sort of criticism because they are often old and very little is known about the manufacturers, if anything.

@The Moog Absolutely. But what I appreciate the most is there’s generally specific characteristics or stylized changes about the toys that takes them out of that licensing category *just* enough to not be penalized, while being original, albeit often times badly. But that’s what makes pachi, pachi to me.

Indeed, its like a no man's land of toy making with its own language. I always assumed that 'Knock-Off (KO) meant taking an existing toy design and changing it just enough to avoid legal action but 'Bootleg' is a straight up copy (or counterfeit) that is trying to pass as an original.

@The Moog Exactly!!! I can honestly appreciate some loose, but obvious derivation in a sculpt when it’s applied in a way that clearly sets it apart from its source material. But I straight up thought this thing was a new Bear Model Hedo the first couple seconds I saw it until it clicked. It’s just in poor taste and form. It’s a bummer most won’t know enough to notice, or care enough to take it into consideration.

You know what is ironic, is that their profile photo is a bull mark mash of their own brand name.. For the most part that’s fine. Other artists have done it and it’s a playful homage.. But here, it sort of feels like a bit like an insult. With them, as Robert mentioned, having zero apparent permission to use these properties..

I liked the toy okay at first glance, but having these thoughts brought up, and taking a closer look with more consideration. Not so much anymore..

But the Matango just shows you how meta it is.

Honestly, you guys have nailed it already. Without the added bits to this Hedorah, I could easily see it being a new figure from Charactics, Bearmodel or even Marmit. But the whole story (or lack thereof) and licensing issue causes me a major frown. This has all of the ripoff aspect and none of the creativity on a pachi figure. Basically, it is a ripoff of existing toys, versus being a pachi take on the monster itself, which is just summarised in the aspects you've touched on. And even in bootlegging a toy, I feel like they missed the boat on this one. Either go cutesey, go monster, or even go derpy, but this, with the added skull and heart - then add to that the very generic sculpting and body - erg, I guess Hedo-heads will go nuts maybe, and i have not doubt they will make the money they want, but I feel a level of disappointment at that, when there are so many really nice - approved - toys to chase. Look at the hoops Jon had to do for example to get his - and completely unique - Goji passed through. And I think it really works as a new interpretation, and probably why Toho gave its blessing. This kind of smacks a bit too much of toy aping.

Not quite, its actually going for $180 apparently. Still sounds expensive to me though!

You need to divide that price by a factor of ten, and then I might consider it (but would still rather unsculpt those added details). This price tag tells you everything about it though, if you couldn't guess already (which we did).

Replace that Matango that is sculpted into the body with a "$" and I'm sold!

i'm sitting here as a kaiju one / instinctoy collector like... yeah i bought it. i feel personally attacked LOL

i'm honestly already thought about photographing some together. and i enjoy daruma z. not enough to get a second one, but i'm happy with it. it's nicer to use the alternate arm, as i think the machine gun arm is overkill.
