Diff'rent strokes fer diff'rent folks, and all. I respect your opinion, but I happen to adore the VP line. The chunky sculpts, the amazing rough textures, the variety of personality added to the standard monsters - for me it really works. These are certainly very different takes on most of the kaiju, but ones which I appreciate. They are almost pachi in their interpretation. Then I have to also say that their heft in hand and the overall quality, makes these very playable and fun toys. There is also the point that these VP figures came out at a time when most sofubi was barely even known or ignored, and there was not even an inkling that it might grow to encompass this entire new breed of designs and artists we have now. I respect where these came from, and I still love 'em. Goofy, of course, but that's the kind of toy I like. :)

To be clear though, these are all original Marmit sculpts, even as I recognise the Mamitora recycled the Barry body. I don't consider any of this era vintage, but see that the further divorced we get from it, how some might interpret it as 'vintage.'

When I first read this description of the VP vinyl I didn't really get it but thinking about it, you nailed it. I wouldn't call it brittle because that is too harsh and would be unfair, but 'crunchy' seems apt. I have a Hedorah candy case that is even more crunchy!

Yes, these new makers holding Lotto sales right out of the gate is total bullshit. The only reason lotto sales exist in the first place (in my understanding) was to give established makers with intense competition for their limited toys, a way to give collectors worldwide a 'fair' shake at acquiring a toy. When you're a new maker with no pedigree or back catalogue/credible reputation to speak of, there is absolutely no reason to hold a lotto sale. Unless of course you are aiming your toy squarely at the 'hype' market for monetary gain. The same goes for a new maker putting a $300 price tag on their first ever toy, its just greed - plain and simple IMO.

In the last few years i've seen a lot of new makers that are treating 'toys' as a business first and creative outlet second. Where as i feel, not even that long ago, it was the other way around.

Money and greed fuck up most things in life generally, so why should the indie toy world be any different? Its a shame, but there are still plenty of un-hyped toys out there. Plenty of creative cats quietly releasing great toys for fair prices and there are plenty of still-affordable cool toys available on the secondary market.

And don't get me started on these painters/customisers that try to triple the cost of a toy just because they've covered it with a coat of their technicolor vomit

We deffo can't have VP Baragon associated with some of the abominations in this thread...
He is the most loved crunchy brown poo sculpture in my collection.

Absolutely. I would say if a toy line is called Para Babies, it shouldn't be a problem if some of them appear a tad 'goofy'. Kind of the whole point, no?

Fully agreed. The one case I could see possibly being argued for first time lotto is when a maker comes along like Luke/GS, and starts putting out toys there at prices which are basically cost (or even less it would seem in some cases), and then the toys are in very small numbers which would like not even be able to meet a small demand (<20). In that case, since so few are available and they would all likely sell out regardless, one could go with a lottery model. The place where this entire case falls apart is, I cannot honestly see any maker, especially a new one, going this route. Generally the tiny runs are for the 'art pieces' and limited due to size and/or detail involved (whether this is justified or not, I won't argue here). For any standard toy, once you've invested in purchasing the vinyl, making the molds, having it pulled, and all the time and effort up to that point, it only makes sense to try and recoup those costs by producing more. And here I think we get onto another aspect which has really led to this whole diminishing returns in the hobby. People seem to purposefully make fewer toys just to generate the hype/demand, and then charge bucketloads to try and offset the costs. That is ass-backwards if you ask me, but it's all just one nerd's opinion.

Most definitely. While the Vinyl Paradise line was sort of a precursor to the smaller ParaBaby line, the point stands. And even if all these toys aren't your bag, they are most definitely not in the same category of ugly which this thread covers. These are the just the toys which I would have - and still do - love as a kid, reliving all the adventures of the many incarnations of Godzilla and his cohorts. Cheap and derpy, maybe, but oh so fun. I will die on the hill raising the VP line as great, even if I am the only one on it. :)

I think a lot of new makers assume if the public sees “lotto” the pupils will dilate with assumed hype attached to whatever it is they’re releasing. Just do a goddamn web drop and get your toys into the hands of interested collectors. *If* there begins to be enough interest obviously a lotto could be appropriate.

My favorite is newjack makers holding a lotto, shipping out to winners, THEN putting up lotto remnants in shop to just get picked up.

Well, don't take it as gospel or anything. From my recollection though (and figure stamps, which the VP line had to begin with), the Vinyl Paradise figures came out in around 1996, with the PB line following in 1998. However, there was some overlap in the periods of production, as I think the VP line wrapped up around 2001-ish.

Oh wait, why are we talking real toy info here, back to the ugly discussion! haha

Yeah, exactly what happened with that awful 'Mechacreatch' AKA 'Frankenstein's Ball Bag'. Remember him? Came here asking for opinions on his new toy, was met with mostly polite and constructive advice, but then threw a wobbler because it didn't get universal praise and called us all haters. He hasn't been back since!

Yes, here's some new paint applications on this confused cowpat of a toy. IMO no paint job will save it from the bargain bin of the indie toy world. Seems like he's trying to promote it solely on the strength of the guest painter nowadays.

@abelincolnjr because the designer is an amateur DJ. What's funny to me is that a lot of "urban vinyl kaiju" anxieties are about get-rich-quick makers pumping out incoherent designs to capitalise on hype. Not so for this one.

Turns out you can make a toy genuinely inspired by everything that shaped your childhood, but it's still an "everything" toy, so it still comes out looking like uh. That^^

Yes, there's a big difference between using other creators work for 'inspiration' as a jumping off point for your own original work and the cut and paste hack job that we see above.

Yeah. That toy looks terrible and the paint doesn’t help it’s cause. :/

My memories of that Vinyl Paradise line is seeing countless cracked and crushed Baragons and the Ultra kaiju that were based on him lying around the Club Daikaiju office. Some were returns, some actually arrived from Japan that way.

The vinyl quality on them improved a bit when they got to Ebirah and Megalon but they usually seemed to be misshapen somehow and required correction with a hair dryer.

There were a series of San Diego Comic Con exclusives that were sold through Club D and nobody wanted them. They sat around for years.

But hey, if someone else likes them, by all means, enjoy.

This looks eerily like Kim Jung Un.

He ordered hundreds of them too. They will be the Atari E.T. game of this era of sofubi

That's because the maker sculpted Kim Jung Un as a pop-culture reference... probably saw the Putin dolls were popular on Mandarake and went down that route.
