These Japanese dudes that make this racist black face bullshit should have to travel round the Deep South ,CHI, or Saint Lewis for a couple.
See that this is a real still relevant issue POC in America have to deal w/ ... get educated on the real.
It’s easy to talk shit a world away, but shit can get real, real quick.

Just throwing cultural diversity into the mix . . . from what I understand through reading and taking to people over the years, it may be the way Asian kids are taught history that makes 'em think Nazi iconography is OK to use in this 'playful' context.

As an example, the Japanese have always aspired to be the best version of themselves and strive for perfection in all they do. When old Adolf is promoted as an idealistic perfectionist, the (abhorrent) methods he used to achieve his goals seem to take a back seat and instead his focus and drive are the main 'bullet points' they hone in on . . . the 15-20 million who were killed in concentration camps, relegated to a footnote.

It's a cultural difference that's fucked-up to Western understanding, but so is having porn next to the comics on the magazine rack, used panties in vending machines and $2,000+ plastic dollys!

Seems like some elements of the US might be suffering from the same fucked-up attitude, but without the early-age educational indoctrination and/or idealistic excuses (it's a miracle they can put their MAGA caps on properly).

Not condoning it in any way, just highlighting that Japan is a very different and insular 'world' . . . and unless you've seen or experienced it, you might not perceive just HOW different!

That said, even without the racist overtones, the Longneck toy is just fugly regardless!

15-20 million across Europe... Cultural differences aside, it's remarkable how Germany was held accountable and is (rightfully) considered to hold a historic responsibility (let's not get into how well the "de-nazification" worked out after '45 or current affairs tho), while the Japanese government is still reluctant to even make fucking excuses. Which I find particularly relevant because an apology holds much stronger meaning in Japanese culture. Getting very much off-track, but I'd love to now how Mizuki's "Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths" was perceived in Japan at the time of release - interestingly enough, you can't find anything about that even on the Japanese wiki page.

And yeah that Menargo is shit.

I think that it's tough to generalise a whole country's viewpoint just because of what we know about them i.e. edgy kids cosplaying inappropriately, Government silence over acknowledging war crimes and a selective curriculum taught in schools. In Australia a lot of boomers seemed to handle the treatment of indigenous Australians in the same manner. . I have a lot of Japanese family and friends who know exactly what historical horrors occurred by their ancestors (who are all mostly deceased by now) because they took it upon themselves to learn. Let us not forgot that Japan is a country where post-war themes are massive in all forms of media and art. Cosplaying fuckwits aside, I have faith in the youth to learn from the past and hopefully make the world a better place in the future - not just in Japan but across the globe. Fingers crossed anyway.

Amended and ordered . . . anime and manga are usually off my radar but the 90% of the book being based on fact has me interested!

Now that is a great book. Brutally honest for a manga.

Using blackface as a colorway for a toy is just an artist exploiting a marginalized group from a place they have no grip on.
    shit's dumb and racist.

All that Nazi shit... They know better. IDGAF we have the internet. and enough media written, that there is no excuse for anyone to bump that shit.

Looks like the Longneck Menargo doll did serve the totem purpose of causing intellectual discussion after all.

@badteethcomics What is your opinion of this Menargo?

This book is amazing, even among Mizuki's impressive repertoire of work. I highly recommend the wonderful print version (English language) put out by Drawn & Quarterly*:

    https://www.drawnandquarterly.com/b...-onward-towards-our-noble-deaths-and-nonnonba

I know it has also been reprinted in a few other languages, including French and Italian.

    * a small publisher who have been spearheading so much in the efforts of bringing Mizuki to English audiences for the first time. And doing amazing and quality releases at that.

Hey, at least the tags look like actual tags and not laser-printing on top of wood disguised to look like vinyl. An absence of glittered lacquer in jet-ski-worthy gradients is also appreciated.

That’s probably the aspect I like most... the flat paint.
