"cute " vinyls

They're a lot more spread out in a few rooms and my current camera is rubbish at indoor shots unfortunately. I've got them grouped on top of my cupboards, fridge, basically any elevated flat surface. I have a wall of hanging clip huggers and plushies that I've never taken photos of. My fridge is literally covered in vintage plastic fridge magnets, which I love. My kitchen is pretty fuckin crazy looking to be honest ...

 

I think it was this thread but I saw an old post from PK with a full shelf of vintage elephant rubber toys and got this one on eBay

 

Nice, I don't think I've seen that one before, love the green colour. Certain animals feature much more than others for vintage squeakers. Cats, Dogs and Ducks of course. Rodents and Rabbits, and Elephants also seem very popular.

 

If you search “Sanitoy elephant” there are a bunch listed and I’ve seen blue, green, and pink painted versions. A nice, fairly large, cheap, cute toy that you can easily obtain - what more can you ask for?

 

My latest Combex (4" high) taken from a vintage teething ring. The dealer that sold me this also sold me the orange one. She commented that maybe the mold was different for the orange version, because there are more details on the tan coloured one. I replied it was the same mold for both but the quality and colour of the vinyl just shows off the details better. The orange vinyl is the most common colour Combex used as far as i've seen.

Tan were the earliest Convex from 1958 through the mid 1960's. They also used white at that time.

Orange are from the 1970's.

The paints are very sharp on early species whereas later ones are sloppy, tho charming.

Black is the least common color they used. Have only seen cats and the Golliwog in that tone.

With all the resources on the net, Combex is still one of the most elusive companies to get a full understanding of.

The folks at the modern facilities did not seem to have any information nor a "vault" or archives so it's frustrating to collect but cheap, generally

Not vinyl, but cute. KUDDLEE UGLEE from the 80's, with a nod to 'My Pet Monster' with the purple plastic chain. Made by Tara Toy Corp.

 

I've been searching for this vintage squeaker for about 10 years, and held out small hope of finding one because its very rare. His name is FLOOK by an artist who went under the name of TROG (Wally Fawkes) and he was the main character in the Daily Mail comic strip from 1949 to 1984. The woman who listed him on ebay didn't know what he was, so i got him for a reasonable price.

I found a larger compressed paper version a long time ago (which is even rarer) but that one is very fragile and i wanted a more durable version. Score!

Really charming character design, I almost enjoy the compressed paper sculpt more but its hard to choose! Thanks for sharing and congrats on the score @The Moog.

 

I know what you mean, but I think the more realistic fur on the vinyl version makes it my favorite. Its a shame the comic strip has had very few reprints, its currently considered a bit of a 'lost' classic. Maybe a proper reprint series will happen in the future, who knows.

I wonder if putting a light coat of some sort of fixative would help preserve that paper version longer?

 

Yeah, its an idea but he's really desiccated. I fear that any liquids would change his colour, or make him go mushy. I've toyed with the idea of getting a perspex box made to exact dimensions, so he slips right in all snug and protected. Probably be expensive bespoke.

 

Amazing! when you think you've seen it all, there's always something else. it's a great character design and I can't say I've ever seen a toy made of compressed paper. Was it a window display piece or something?

 

I'm not sure, but that is a possibility i've not thought of before. Other than the fragility of the figure, being an advertising display piece would certainly explain why its so rare! Who knows, it could just of been a readers mail away offer, something like that . . .

 

Vintage Chinese plastic, more like little ornaments than toys i suspect. I found the sleeping one last Friday in an old junk shop for 20p . The other two i've had a few years, i didn't know there were other sculpts out there.

 

Newest vintage bear purchase on the left by Chiltern. One on the right by Combex.

 

Babu Bear coin bank made of soft vinyl. I think its Korean.

 

These were on a big bunch of vintage key-rings all clipped together, the woman wanted 50p each for any keyring but a young lad was trying to buy them all in a very pushy and arrogant way. Luckily the woman was having none of it and sent him off with nothing. I then got to search through them all, and bought a few, these two are my fav's from the bunch.

 

He is marked Japan on the back and Reliance on his foot

 

1950's vintage plastic teddy bear (6" high). His legs are jointed (and they move back and forth when you turn his head left and right) but the arms are held together by elaborate hooks and elastic threaded through the body. No idea why, i would of thought it would of been simpler to just do standard joints on the arms too. All the elastic does is make them a bit loose.

 

Vintage 1950's ring toss duck and clown. I found the duck years ago and the clown more recently.

Took me a looong time to track down a full set of these:

Wanwan Sanjuushi/Dogtanian, Popla 1981

 

They are well worth the effort you put in to find them, absolutely wonderful. I have a few smaller Dogtanian figures myself, but they're not in the same league as these.

I used to enjoy the TV show back in the day, it was a lot of fun!
