Moore’s Swamp Thing is total gold! Have you read Morrison’s run of Animal man? Also a highly recommended DC series from the late 80’s.

Sting of all people? Never knew that. Haha. The Hell sequence was awesome, there was some real crazy illustrations in there reminiscent of the mind of M.C. Escher. An Etrigan cameo is always welcome as well, who can deny that fella’s charm?

Why yes I have. It’s one of my all time favourites. In particular Morrison’s uncomfortable ancedote about his cat which passed away. Pretty affecting stuff.

I’m sorry, can we just end this once and for all and admit that DC is the superior in the big two debate? In their heyday they released so many watershed comics that Marvelcucks can’t touch them (Semi-joking, I enjoy works from both companies).

Personally I would have to choose DC/Vertigo simply because I've read and enjoyed way more of their stuff over the years. Marvel have always been in the background.

So Tom Scioli is working on Fantastic Four Grand Design... there's rumors that Jim Rugg now has a Grand Design in the works (he has mentioned that he has had to abandon his new long-distance running themed comic)... hopefully this is a new category of Marvel Comics coming up. Which indie artists would you like to see with their own Grand Design series?

That's a tricky question, as the two GD titles so far are definitely passion projects, as I'm sure Rugg's will be, but it's not difficult to imagine Marvel just trying to assign salable properties to folks they deem hip. Doesn't mean I don't have a fantasy list of combos I'd love to see, though!

The first ones that popped in my head, some more tongue-in-cheek than others:

    Michel Fiffe, Daredevil
    Jim Woodring, Doctor Strange
    Noah Van Sciver, Iron Man
    Lisa Hanawalt, Power Pack
    James Stokoe, The Avengers
    Julie Doucet, She-Hulk (!)
    Benjamin Marra, Nick Fury
    Joe Daly, Conan
Dozens more, just about all of which I hope never happen!

EDIT: Fixed a couple of poor word choices and an embarrassing misspelling! Sue me.

Man Benjamin Marra has to get on board for one.. all of those Marvel Universe Handbook illustrations on instagram from a couple of years back were perfect training for it!

    ^ Secretly NSFW.

Yep, Mr. Ware is back. In case you weren't already planning on steering clear, chew on this:

A major graphic novel event more than 16 years in progress. Rusty Brown is a fully interactive, full-color articulation of the time-space interrelationships of three complete consciousnesses in the first half of a single midwestern American day and the tiny piece of human grit about which they involuntarily orbit. A sprawling, special snowflake accumulation of the biggest themes and the smallest moments of life, Rusty Brown literately and literally aims at nothing less than the coalescence of one half of all of existence into a single museum-quality picture story, expertly arranged to present the most convincingly ineffable and empathetic illusion of experience for both life-curious readers and traditional fans of standard reality. From childhood to old age, no frozen plotline is left unthawed in the entangled stories of a child who awakens without superpowers, a teen who matures into a paternal despot, a father who stores his emotional regrets on the surface of Mars and a late-middle-aged woman who seeks the love of only one other person on planet Earth.
In other news: I'm all caught up on that Hickman X biz. Damn, that kid has some big ideas! I think I'll stick with it for a while.

Yeah it looks great, I saw it in my local FP last weekend. I have all the ACME editions of Rusty Brown, but I'm assuming this big collection has new stuff / unpublished stuff?. How much do you think I will be doubling up on if I buy this new book?

@The Moog - Hard to say, Joe, as I don't have a copy in hand yet, but it's safe to say that if you've got the four hardback ANL issues that you've already got the bulk of the new volume. I know there are new pages, stuff written since Lint, and the story from The Book of Other People (and what a story!) is included, but beyond that your guess is as good as mine. More Chicago Reader stuff? Me, the sure to be elaborate folding puzzle of a dust jacket is enough to get me through the door, and few do endpapers as well as he does, so I'm happy either way.

Oh, heh, if you want to read an argument for avoiding the book, this person really hates it!

ANYWAY... If you really do need a more thorough report before you kiss your £20 goodbye, I'm dork enough to have already been looking forward to a side-by-side page analysis, so I can make sure to fire off a copy of my report in your direction just as soon as I've filled in the notebook.

Reminds me that I've been meaning to do a little photo report on Palooka-Ville and Clyde Fans for you, but here's the short version:

    Buy Clyde Fans!

    EDIT: Missed an ess. Argh.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about but I will almost certainly buy this new edition anyway. The effort and fine crafting he puts into all his books is hard to resist. It was £25 in FP so I didn't buy it on impulse, but its on my 'to get' list for sure.

And yeah, now I know there's more Clyde Fans out there I should make an effort to track it down.

I have the Rusty Brown book on the way to me, very excited to see more adventures of my fifth-favorite dysfunctional toy collector (the first for being the Eltingville Club).

I just moved last week and was boxing up all of my Chris Ware hardcovers. That damn Building Stories box doesn't fit in any boxes so it forced me to open it up and get lost in the art for over an hour.

Looking back on my time with Swamp Thing, two particular issues stand out (although it was all amazing):
The one where people tripped out by ingesting his fruits and the issue where he was basically a fucking chair.

I'm in the full swing of things again and going through Moore's other work, I notice the themes of drugs, magic and breaking free of societal norms come up often. Pause for Grant Morrison's The Invisibles and I came across much of the same. Now the surreal, drugged out "woke", enchanting and yet incredibly nihilistic stories these two authors concoct is really up my alley. In terms of literature I can't think of many authors that parallel this asides from say, Pynchon. Would there be anything else to recommend me, the young padowan so that I can further go down this esoteric rabbit hole or is this it, the peak of all things?

    Have you read Promethea?
It’s by Moore with art by J.H. Williams III, an absolute MONSTER of a comicbook illustrator.

He drew the first six issues of Desolation Jones by Warren Ellis. Which is great.

And now I’m thinking of Black Summer and No Hero by Ellis and Juan Jose Ryp.

Also, have you ever read Godland by Joe Casey and Tom Scioli? Surreal & drugged out, for sure. 8)

And when it comes to enchantment & nihilism, I’d be remiss not to mention Transmetropolitan by Ellis & Darick Robertson.

You might give Milligan and McCarthy a try, they came up with some pretty fun stuff together. For a more casually psychedelic experience, you might enjoy Joe Daly's comics; Vastly different approach, but a solid addition to a balanced diet. Have you stepped much into Jodorowski's world? Probably. You're already down with Veitch, so that's no help...

If you want to clean your head a bit with someone that's seen the fractals, but has ZERO interest in photo realism, or social realism, or realism, you might want to spend some time with Jesse Jacobs. Spare on thick narrative, huge on transporting you to a world.

As far as heavy hitting typers and their faithful pencil guys, though, I'll have to give some more thought as to who might be able to take you to the exact place you're craving.

I was avoiding mentioning Casey or Scioli, heh. Ellis is a guy that I'm aware that I'm supposed to have read hundreds of pages by.

On my way to completing The Invisibles and Promethea is lined up next. Looks like the culmination of all I want.

Dude I just had flashbacks because I must of read Black Summer nigh on 10+ years ago and Transmetroplitan with it's sci-fi gonzo journalism has always been a fave. Amazing! Ellis is a beast too, I'll give him that. Will definitely check out Godland, thanks so much!

DIdn't refresh my browser so I missed this... Yes I am definitely familiar with both Jodorowski and Veitch haha. I will add Jesse Jacobs to the reading list, do you have a recommended entry point? I await further word from you, comrade.

As far as Jacobs goes, he really hasn't published that much, maybe five fairly slim books. Safari Honeymoon is great, but I really like By This You Shall Know Him. Can't stress enough, though, how very much not like the 24-pagers we're talking about here his work is. Daly's closer, heh, but you could shelve him at the a more well adjusted corner of your Hanselmann shelf. Try his Highbone Theatre on for size.

This guy Adam Hines did a thing called Duncan the Wonder Dog about 10 years ago. That one might kick yr ass a bit, hard to say.

I think part of the problem here is that my head is swimming with too many things for too many reasons to pluck the ripest cherries from. Basically you should just come over and I'll keep handing you stuff until something sticks.

Looking for a memory jog, and because I was curious what the net might say, I found us

I think I'll stop typing now.

    EDIT!

Try to track down The Dregs. I'm certain you'd dig it. Look into Ryan K. Lindsay while yr at it.

Alright so before making the jump (That spoiler is pure class btw), do my following summations of series I'm yet to read sound correct based off the information I got off their respective synopses?

    • The Dregs looks to be a homeless neo noir
    • By This You Shall Know Him is metaphysical meditation on the nature of shapes, done so largely by illustration?
    • Highbone Theatre: Mumble core stoner comedy mixed with magical realism a la Hanselmann as you mentioned
    • Duncan the Wonder Dog is an allegorical work of fiction that asks... what if? (Seems that there is more planned for this series but as you mentioned the bloke wrote it about 10 years ago, I wonder if that'll ever come into fruition)
As a little detour, I might read Batman: Damned for my Halloween graphic novel experience. It looks to focus on the more paranormal gallery of characters within the DC Universe and I enjoyed Azzarello's Joker.

Well, I don't want to ruin anything further than the blurbs possibly have, so I'll just say your assessments range from close enough to spot on. You did forget cannibalism, though!

I've been reading Azzarello and Llovet's new smut-fest, Faithless. Underwhelming, kinda, but there is more than a pinch of drugs and magic in it.

Back on the dudes yr digging, have you read Morrison and friends' The Filth or Nameless yet? Ooof.

All this grit and dark corridors of the soul, man, what you really need next is this!*

*Tom's done just as many drugs as your boys Alan and Grant, he just excretes them way differently.

Shame to hear Faithless is underwhelming. The Filth yes, Nameless nein. Didn't realise there was life for Morrison post Batman run. Cool.

I'd have taken you up on the redirected recommendation link had this crossover thrown in a bit of Archie or He-Man for good measure ;)
