    toys can’t be art ?

He sculpts it, pulls the vinyl and paints it.
    Vs.
He buys the canvas, stretches it, paints it.

I agree with you. I’m just saying the more people who recognize that, the more we will see trends from the “fine art” world apply to toy art. People have been dropping this kind of cash on sculptures for millennia, and toys are another kind of sculpture. The state of toys as art has not changed, but the public attitude seems to have changed a lot over the past decade or two.

    Hypocrisy? In the collecting market?

Heavens to Betsy, I do declare I'm getting the vapors!

    As was intended!

Life isn't black and white, unlike this lovely young lass on the fainting couch. It's a fine balancing act.

Hirota decided he will really only sell to the same small handful of people repeatedly and that's his decision. Pushead sells openly but gives preferential treatment to those he feels have earned it, however that is determined. I mean, isn't one of the benefits of being a business owner the ability to run it how you feel is morally right?

There is no right and wrong with a maker, with IMO one exception: don't be shady/lie to your customers. You may not agree with Hirota's sales techniques or his pricing, but I don't think he's really lied to people, which is more than I can say about a lot of people in this hobby, collector and maker.

Since we're on the topic, I do really like a few toys from what's been shown so far, but on the whole it looks like a weak showing. The rusted one-off style in particular isn't doing it for me. Plus, just the fact that this highly exclusive "Spectre Semen" colourway made the cut:

Someone's going to be grinning ear to ear at the opportunity to pay thousands for what looks to be one of the ugliest toys at the show.

Should’ve hired Dril One for that custom. At least he would’ve made it legit and look super good.

There's a certain type of sofubi painting that's prominent with the makers in Asia... Shitty textures, gross colours, overly detailed like some Warhammer bullshit... At least he's smart enough to cater for the collectors sensibilities over there. These paint apps belong with the other toys in this style over in the fugly thread

I agree with you about “overly-detailed” paint. It looks great on a miniature, but there are certain traditions that should be honored with kaiju toys. It just kills the nostalgia factor, if you don’t.

If he tells people he painted it with his own puke and jizz they would pay twice as much.

edit* Now this toy is a skeet 8)

I dont know why he’s going down the rabbit hole of this whole rusted/oxidized look, so many artists have done it before. Hirota is uber talented and could take his paint apps in many different directions-this seems stale to me.

A few of the pieces look really nice, the Brutal A’s and even a few of the “distressed” toys, but this one looks kinda like a seagull with an upset stomach had its way with it.

Hey- it worked for Shig

I think Hirota himself has done it better before with the verdigris Itamu! That's what baffled me about these.

The 'nooks and crannies' of the Itamu hold paint and add to the effect way better than the smooth surfaces of the Mecha Gorilla's.

Is it the one off, or one getting off to the one off...?

I don’t find this thread brutal. There’s some light criticism and poking fun of this particular paint app and the current state of his sales and methods, but no one here is shitting on the man himself. Quite the opposite I've read, in fact. His toys are heavily praised here, just not the prices, which I find sound.

I for one think my opinion of toys, artists, etc is just one worthless opinion amidst a sea of voices......but yeah the endless insta-spamming leading up to the big event is bound to generate some discussion here. I definitely suffer from SSF* this time of year.

Not sure its strictly a pun, more a play on words. But it got me.
