There was a another new Super7/Secret Base collaboration released at Wondercon this past weekend:

Price was $65 and it was about the same size as the vintage Takatoku vinyls. Not sure why they used the VF-1J head with the VF-1S body, maybe that was intentional (the historical trend of "anime inaccuracy" in real robot sofubi) or maybe it's a Robotech thing.

Would love to see some bad guys if this turns into a regular thing. Zentraedi powered suits would be perfect for this format.

Hmm, very interesting. I would also like to see some figures to fill the gaps left by the Takatoku line (and not just a million billion Valkyrie repaints).

I am also puzzled by the 'Skull Squadron' VF-1J... doesn't ring any bells for me.

So anyone able to clarify the reason for the use of the VF-1J model?

@Roger Just curious, but where did you get the info on the involvement of Secret Base?

Don't know where that info popped up originally, but:
Secret Base/Super7 Robotech Japanese Vinyl - VF-1S (Skull Leader) $65.00
is attached to the product "tile" here: https://super7.com/collections/japanese-vinyl

A friend of mine bought at Wondercon and sent me a pic of the cardback, it had the info about it being a Secret Base collaboration.

Very intrigued about this. I used to love that cartoon when I was younger!

As much as I told myself that I wouldn’t collect any new sculpts/artists, I may have to break the rules for these..

Received the VF-1S today. I can confirm that the back of the card says that it is a collaboration between Super7 and Secret Base. I'm a little surprised that this was not released with more fanfare, given how hard S7 and SB push their other figures on Instagram, etc.

The size and style is very much like the Takatoku vinyls. So I'm kind of puzzled as to why the first release would be a VF-1J in Skull Squadron colors, given that I don't remember this design existing in the animation or otherwise. Moreover, Takatoku already produced the VF-1J (in its various pilots' colors) and a VF-1S.

Anyway, I'm happy to see this project crop up, but I hope the next figures cover some new territory (e.g., the trainer VF-1D or the brown VF-1A, if we have to march through the Valkyries).

Is the head a separate piece from the torso? I'm not up on my robotech/macross model designations, but I'd love to see a Transformers Jetfire version. :)

It appears to be a separate piece, but there is no neck articulation.

Late to the party on this, but definitely quite a surprise! Yeah, a VF-1J in that livery doesn't show up anywhere in the tv series or movie...but I don't think that really bothers me. I'm not super-hot about the sculpt--and that's the most important thing. Something about the derp level feeling a bit forced, if that makes sense. But I guess I would need to see one next to a vintage Takatoku one to make a fair comparison.

Just as a counterpoint, I absolutely LOVE what Yutani Shouten is doing with his Wonderfest Transformers mini sofubi. His figures match the vintage Takara aesthetic brilliantly. Takes real skill to be able to pull off such convincing "fakes". Much like Gargamel's Scopedogs, come to think of it!

Anyway, I think if SB/S7 start filling in holes in the original line (Kakizaki, Super Ostrich, Elintseeker, movie versions with FAST Packs...and then start doing them in other modes), I'd get more hype. Or if they pulled off some miracle co-licensing deal and made that Super VF-1S in Jetfire colors! Oh, but a Zentraedi foot soldier, and then the male and female power armors would be dope as hell. And, man, if these are branded Robotech, does that mean a Mospeada Legioss could be possible? A Southern Cross Hovertank???

You can watch the whole series on Netflix.

I wanna see more variety if possible. This is a first good step in the right direction!

So retro that it has fewer details than the vintage toy!

Did they ever make the Max version?

No, the glow version was the last one they did.

I'd love to see a glow version with a paint job closer to what was in the cartoon.
