Being close to the production companies is essential, specifically when he is starting out (which I'm sure he is already aware of). As you've mentioned, London, and the surrounding area (Home Counties) is where a lot of the industry is located. A good friend's son is 5-6 years ahead of your son in the industry and after trying to grind it out (post grad) in the South West, he moved to London after 12-months; since then, he's gone from strength to strength and hasn't looked back. Mates from Uni are also a big help - when one gets an opportunity, they often recommend their friends and this not only helps the companies find talent but gives the grad opportunity.
I just watched 'Sorry to Bother You' on Hulu last night. Been wanting to check it out sense the trailer came out in 2018. It's about a black guy who gets a job as a telemarketer and discovers he has a "white voice" that he uses to make sales with. Dont want to spoil it for anybody but HOLY SHIT, M. Night Shyamalan doesn't have anything on the twist at the end. It has a little bit of dark-ish humor but it's a funny movie none the less. Highly recommend it.
Been watching Frontera Verde on NF. I've been liking it - especially Yua and Ushe, master and apprentice who are the forest's (the Amazon) protectors.
When I came out of the theatre after seeing that, I felt such a surge of hope for the future. Excellent film. Also, new Harley Quinn cartoon anyone? I'm loving it so far
Oh, and we just wrapped up High Score Girl on NF tonight - very adorable, and loved all of the old school video game history that it revolved around.
I loved watching the show, but a little voice in my head wondered if it veered too close to nerd wish fulfilment. What's your take?
Possibly? But I don't think so. I watched it with my wife who doesn't have much depth/breadth of knowledge about video games (and I only know slightly more than she does). But she loved it as much as I did. The way that the video games were incorporated into the story was a - nay, THE - huge reason the show was awesome. Stylistically, having the actual game footage (8/16/32 bit, cell-shaded, polygon, etc) in the CG animated world was really fun. And I loved when game characters would talk to Haruo! It was a story about a huge game nerd, so I don't think it would be possible for them to go too deep video game history/trivia - it's all absolutely necessary given who the protagonist is. However, if you're talking about having two ultra-gamer girls fighting for Haruo's love...I still don't care! I thought both Ono and Hidaka were awesome, and felt empathy for both of them when Haruo was oblivious to their feelings. I like that it didn't set them up as rivals in the viewer's eyes where Ono = Good and Hidaka = Bad. After we just finished it up my wife looked it up and another season is in the works!
Maybe I cared too much, then I'm so used to seeing really disgustingly toxic gamers online that I probably jumped to the worst interpretation without thinking. Thanks for inviting me to reconsider. Think I'm going to give the series another watch now!
@---NT--- I watched High Score Girl some time back this year, though I can’t quite say when. I, too, loved it. I basically saw it as a story of two individuals that were somewhat defined by their competitive spirit and love for video games that turned into a catalyst for a growing relationship between each other that otherwise wouldn’t have developed, had it not been for video games. A lot of self discovery, but also discovery about one another through certain situations that develop as the story progresses. Your interpretation of Ono and Hidaka is spot on in my eyes, as well. Though I can’t say I fully believe Haruo was 100% oblivious, but just to the extent of feelings(believing Ono had none, and not knowing Hidaka had that strong of). Last I read the series was supposed to return next month in the 20’s, but it’s been months since I checked. Lighthearted, super fun, very well done(especially with actual game footage on arcade cabinets), and a good amount of heart string tugging. “Don’t Fuck With Cats” was a WILD ass ride of four episodes. Recommended.
Yeah, oblivious wasn't the right word regarding Haruo. He just didn't know how to understand or what to do about his own feelings, or how to interpret the feelings of those around him - very much a coming-of-age story. It reminded me a bit of those special Simpson's episodes that would tug at your heart, like when Lisa bought Bart's soul back after he sold it to Milhouse - mostly good fun and laughs, but balanced out with just a little heart-swelling. And the little bits of violence really rounded it out nicely! Also, if you guys didn't watch through the credits, most episodes had a little bit of info/trivia at the very end!

I wish every single person who hangs out on this board would watch this movie. One of the best art docs I've ever seen, and beyond just being an incredible visionary artist, Szukalski was such an important influence on so many in the comics and lowbrow art scene in CA.

@toothaction For what it’s worth, I solely watched this documentary because you posted the trailer here. This man is brilliant. I’m not by any stretch any sort of art buff or appreciator. I’m admittedly dumb as shit and take everything I see at face value. I don’t analyze, I’m incapable of reading into art(not that I’d even want to), but I loved everything this man stood for. Spoiler Sans his bizarre and gross spout with anti - semitism. His story, whether you’re an artist or not, and his legacy is incredibly inspiring.
I’ll check it out. I watched some of the latest season of The Toys That Made Us. I’m glad they extended it past the original goal of just 8 episodes. It’s neat to see the behind-the-scenes of the major toy lines. I wonder if they’re going to get into Soft Vinyl at some point. The episode I watched tonight had pics of some of the old Super Sentai toys, but didn’t talk about them at all. The focus was on the 90s Power Ranger toys.
@Smotemotem Unless they make an episode on Godzilla toys I don’t see them jumping into sofubi or soft vinyl. Even the Toho and Tsuburaya toys that made it to the US weren’t of the same derived material as was made in either Japan or China. But I could still see them doin’ an episode on Godzilla toys that could potentially feature sofubi, by way of Marusan and Bullmark, but not have it be the focus.
I was pretty keen to watch this after hearing about it last week... there are some interesting segments, especially from a collector's perspective - however this film takes a dive into docu-drama quite quickly and shifts focus onto this guy and his estranged father during the second half. Was an ok watch but I probably wouldn't go back and ever watch it again. At least it's not as bad as the fucking narration and editing on The Toys That Made Us
