How many franchises can you rip off in one toy? ...no, I mean really, has anyone tried to, because it looks like they’re really trying.

... he did a Kurt Kobain version of this toy and called it “Grunge Ape.” Cool, take your penis monkey sculpt and make it look like a suicide victim. Sounds like a GRREEEEAAT idea. Not in bad taste at all.

Sometimes I think this thread has desensitized me to ugly toys. But somedays I find gems like this. Click through for more angles.

I see what you are doing there. Absolutely not clicking. Don't want to know the 'artist', don't want to see more angles.

    Great find though! Freaking fugly.

That Tetran looks like the fuckin’ tape is still on. I might be goin’ overboard but the absolute disrespect to some of these sculpts is atrocious. bEcaUSe i’Ma ARtisT, bRUh! It’s like going into 5Pointz in New York with a bucket of paint and a brush and first time bubble letter tagging over prolific bomb pieces.

I will say that Hellboy lookin’ figure isn’t horrible, but it does look like a kid’s meal toy.

I clicked thru to see who ruined the Tetran and I should have known. Bad enough he pollutes the hobby with his own piece of shit toy never mind ruining other people’s toys too.

Must have used Monster Kolor or something cuz it looks like the paint came off with the tape edges? Not that clean lines would have improved it any..

I think a lot of the Facebook crowd have no concept of what you are talking about. It seems like 'custom' paint jobs are 'de riguer' nowadays for a whole lot of collectors. Its getting out of control and a lot of classic toys are being ruined, which is unfortunate. Here's one example i commented on recently:

@The Moog ”Updated?” What the fuck does that even mean? They’re vintage for a reason. The sculpt/toy isn’t a person aging behind the times that needs a cool, new outfit to catch up with modern trends. I’m gonna admit I feel like I’m gatekeeping like a motherfucker here, but some things you just don’t mess with, I guess. If it ain’t broke, don’t “fix” it.

Excellent way of putting it, made me laugh ...

Well, one person with taste agreed with me and four in total liked my comment, so that told that fucking twat.

You can see the fucking ripped edges of the tape. How can you not clean up something like that? Ever heard of using scissors to get a nice straight edge on your tape? And the tape even lifted off some paint around the edges. It almost looks like he painted everything silver first, and then put clear blue on top of it. (Or maybe he did, I have no idea how this shit works.)

This is just an overall travesty. I can imagine a lot of paint jobs and colors that could possibly complement this sculpt... and this is not it.

Also, which FB group is that? Or is it seeecret?

It’s probably Vinyl Kaiju Legion, of which I’m an admin, but rules don’t allow for criticism so perpetrators can’t be chastised. The “customizing” craze is everywhere; I’ve seen for a while now, also on other toy pages, rampant customization of Bandai figures especially, probably because they’re usually cheap. But now that it’s a craze and people can make money from it, nothing is safe. I collect diecast cars, and I love mine as they come. But custom cars are a huge business now.
It also comes down to a matter of taste. If a custom paint job compliments the sculpt and looks great, then who’s angry? The problem is there is no standard of taste in the world anymore. Anything goes...

I hardly ever comment on any of the fine works in this thread because the pictures are worth a million words... but this Tetran is just incredible. All-time fail and insult to the medium; insult to Gargamel. And ffs, these just came out!

It makes me sad and angry to look at it; this, truly, deserves the "toy ruining" label. It's not a matter of taste, here- it's sheer ineptitude, and then a complete lack of self-awareness of failing. Every artist makes a turd sometimes, especially when you're learning new technique, but to finish this and look at it and think, "Yup- another winner! Let's blast this one out to the internet!"... that's something else again. I'll stare at any of the crudely sculpted, five-faced, tri-donged technicolor barfs herein and dismiss with a chuckle and eyeroll- maybe get a bit of dander up if I get contemplative of how these artists are using up resources for these creations- but this one's immediately heartbreaking. Terrible.

I'll admit that I felt a slim sense of satisfaction and a bit of relief (and maybe an infinitesimal swell of hope) when I hopped over to those listings last week and discovered that his ruination hadn't sold.

The fact that the whole project was orchestrated by the maker himself is a whole other matter, though...

It's coming from inside the house!!!
