I'm still learning but I was surprised at the final on this wind up toy. Had writing on the back and still went high!

I think its got to be. The wear marks match up (and the timing). If Yuji doesnt have one it must be insanely rare.

That Tatatoku pachi dino is really special. He has such a great look, and I am in love with that vinyl colour base. The very subtle teal and purple highlight paints work wonderfully. Really though, it is all about the incredible sculpt. Excellent texturing and detail, you can tell someone put a lot of time into getting this guy, and he has all the wabi-sabi nature of a hand sculpted toy which so many folks today could learn from. He is both an excellent monster, crude, and simultaneously expressive and derpy all at the same time. A toy I wish I could own. I am not surprised it went high in the end. I think he is pretty rare, I may have only seen him on one or two occasions in my time collecting.

This is the second figure of these that I have th lucky to see and the first time I see one for sale, I am also in love with the colors of this toy, it is so different from the color pattern used at that time for the Kaiju Sofubi.

Not sure who else was watching this auction for a really amazing and wonderful Kameba figure. This one appeals to me on a whole bunch of levels: for being a really fun crude sculpt of a classic monster, the amazing colours used, and it sheer specialty. Keen fans will recognise this as a very unusual colour scheme for Kameba, with the Hawaiian/'export' version on light bluish-green vinyl being the one commonly considered the rare variant. This one however is on the typical grey vinyl base, but you can clearly see right off the bat has a completely different, brightly coloured paint scheme from the norm. The orange and green are really fun, and work in a wholly different way then the normal 'dark' patterns used for a lot of the Bullmark Tohos. I have no idea what the actual story is with these variants (I'll share one more below), but if anyone does know, I would love for them to chime in. A very wonderful example, something special to see, and it ended up bringing out the heavy bids.

Bullmark 'variant' Kameba, sold for 131,000円

*unfortunately a couple of the images were already pulled from the listing, but I managed to save some HQ pics of the rest

Thanks to @deafmetal for digging through the archives for us and pulling out this other example of a Bullmark Kameba paint variant from 2011, which at the time sold for a whopping 261k yen. This one appear again to be on the grey vinyl, though it looks very bluish in these photos, so I might be wrong and it could be a different base; but has totally different coloured paints used again to the version above. I really love the colour treatments on this example also. But wow, what an investment these toys are!! :o

Great finds Roger and Steve! Thanks for sharing the photos! Thanks too Mark, for sharing the Blue Kameba!

Stevie, I am super intrigued by the Kameba variants. Are these one-off tests or a limited release a long time ago? That blue variant is gorgeous! I can't remember if @brianflynn has a blue one? He has everything! Still remember seeing his Sufenodon in person, and had to exercise extreme discipline to refrain from gluing my face on the display case glass (candy store syndrome). Ugh!

You know, I was thinking about this more and more, Grace, and I am not so sure the two examples I posted are different, i.e. specific versions. As I said, I really don't know though, but I don't think that there are such one-offs or test variants out there. I mean, certainly they were made in the factory for production samples, but would probably be so rare we wouldn't really know of them. I suspect this is a very specific release, but what it was for/when I have no idea. I really hope one of the more knowledgeable guys might know something.

I did some quick colour corrections to the image - which is admittedly so low def and poor it is hard to say - to get a better idea of the earlier example. I think you can see here that it probably is on the grey vinyl, and if that is the case then likely the colours are actually quite close to the one which recently sold. So these would be two examples (at least) of this rare type.

    * apologies as I just did this in Powerpoint, but I am sure someone with some proper software+skills could get it to match very closely to the colour timing of the other YJA image

I've never seen Kamebas like these before, either, very cool!

When it comes to Marusans/Bullmarks there are a lot of anomalous ones out there, like this green Varan I saw at the Bandai Museum in Tochigi:

I ran this by Yuji Nishimura and Masato Shono and neither of them had seen one before. Eiji Kaminaga told me that occasionally a factory would have to deliver, say 500 red vinyl figures with blue paint with a rapid deadline, and would run out of red vinyl and/or blue paint before they were done, so they would hurriedly finish up the run in whatever colors were available. Decades later, it makes "gotta catch 'em all" a pretty hard mission to fulfill.

WHOA, that guy is such a beauty! It looks to me like he is on flesh vinyl, which I am always a sucker for. That is such an incredible one Roger, thanks for sharing it here. That blue-green combo is always a treat when done well, reminds me very much of the Ron colour scheme, maybe this was a trial related. The silver chest gives it a really nice extra pop though! I am sort of surprised - and thinking of it, it would be great to see - that Yuji or someone hasn't taken on re-creating some of these ultra rare variants yet. Could be one of those projects in the works. :D

@ultrakaiju @Mr. Humphreys @Roger - Once again, The Beautiful Book of Monsters provides an excellent resource:

“Will these two be the existence of "Mega Rare" in the second half of the page? Most of Gezora's "blue gray walnut paint" is amazing, but I have never seen this Cameba's spray color. The road of soft vinyl is deep and too deep.”

“Kameba: Bullmark Orange & Dark Green Spray”:

Oh thanks Mark! You are absolutely right, this little tome is an invaluable resource. Really wish I had a copy on hand. I was searching for one not too long ago, but alas, they have gotten a bit pricey lately. Definitely worth it to learn about such gems though. Thanks for sharing the quick pics.

Thank you Mark! I know I bought the BBoM book, looked everywhere for it, but can't find it, along with Leaf Man and some other standard vintages. So frustrating!:x Hopefully they will turn up. Thanks for posting the reference!

I did look in the BBoM before I posted my comment. The one in the book looks like it has slightly different vinyl and paint colors than the one posted here but I guess everyone's mileage may vary.

I find that the poor lighting and photography of the YJA auction listings to be much more suspect myself. ;)

So cool Roger. I was admiring that piece, and the incredible condition it has lasted for. It barely looks used, let alone showing any age at all. I was thinking of the couple cardboard standees I have tried moving once or twice, and yeah, they definitely do not do well (in storage or travel). It's fun, looks great, has such bright colours, and is just a wonderful display. I actually love so much of the non-toy items, so I appreciate this one a lot and am glad you shared it. Someone stored and kept this really well I think, and while expensive, I would guess it is something pretty hard to come by at all, let alone in this condition; so to make a sort of cornerstone for a collection I think it's a nice grab. Now let's all celebrated with the Meiji ice cream!

Just a quick one from yesterday. Really nice Bandai giant size Ninja Arashi, which was going for a steal right up until the end there. Really cool to see one of these all the same, and with his accessories. All around in fair condition, the figure looks decent enough just some staining to his tunic (which could potentially be cleaned). He did have his 'buckle' emblem, but was missing the top two; but this is incredibly common considering these are just 'stickers' that would easily be lost in play, movement, and with aging. Lots of detail to love on this guy.
