Are we due for a sale this month at B & N? Pretty friggin keen for the Showa set (OF COURSE) and Polyester actually includes scratch and sniff cards so that you can finally enjoy Odorama at the (dis)comfort of your own home!

Just got the Lone Wolf & Cub Criterion Collection from B&N, great sale! Now I just need a blu-ray player...
Suggestions? I don't do HD anything, and have no TV (never got one after college). IS there such a thing as one that could play through my old ass laptop, or my video monitor?

No need, I have a blu ray player - and this would probably be your best bet. Mail it to me, I will play it on my tv, we do video chat, and I will point the camera at my tv so you can watch it. Assuming you have a device that can video chat?

The Lone Wolf and Cub set is awesome. I sat and watched it all over two days. See if you can find the physical Easter egg the box set has!

Beautiful, Rei!!! We need to organise a group viewing.

This set is absolutely incredible. One of the finest restorations from Criterion I have purchased. It is so good to be able to enjoy these with the phenomenal quality they were meant to be seen in, after decades of watching across other media. Seriously, watching these films you can appreciate how they had such carry on influence on other filmmakers.

As to the physical player, blu-ray units are not expensive at all anymore, already being supplanted by UHD stuff, but without a television, you are a bit stuffed. None of the HDMI ports on most PCs will allow input signal, and sadly with the death of physical media, it is unlikely you can easily find a computer with a working optical drive. Do you have a tower PC at home connected to your monitor, or what do you consume (if any) entertainment on? If so, you could get a drive to insert relatively easily. Final option would be a portable player for the laptop, but I definitely suspect this is 1) harder to come by, and 2) not so great as a solution.

I have no idea on the reputation/quality of this, but hey, at least the price is cheap -

Thanks Steve! Wouldn’t a group viewing be awesome? A weekend of burritos, beer and bloody flicks! One can dream...
Thanks for the info; a great start. My lady is more tech savvy than me (although that’s relegated to computer stuff, not entertainment tech), so it’s probably all the info she needs. We usually just watch stuff on her iPod or one of the laptops. OR we just go outside. That’s all the big screen we usually need! We’ve also loosely talked of a projector & screen situation, we’ll see!

My understanding is that Criterion does a 24 hour flash sale in March ( I could be wrong)
If anyone hears about it, please post here (trying not to miss it this year)
The flash sales being different from the BN sales

    TLDR
There are usually sales four times a year around the following times:

    • February or March (1 day only) - Criterion website only

    • July (all month) - B&N website/stores only

    • October (1 day only) - Criterion website only

    • November (all month) - B&N website/stores only
Got this from the Criterion Reddit thread. I always miss out on these sales cause I never know the exact time the sale window is. Hope this helps!

Actually it's more like a big hardcover book with very nice graphics. The rigid 'pages' have slots for the discs. You are right about it being big. I keep mine on a bookshelf with oversized art books (not on my usual dvd shelves).

When's the last time you checked it? There was an issue with people keeping it upright on shelves like a book and the discs slid down into the holder and got lodged in the glue. I keep mine flat but others have removed the discs entirely.

Last time I checked was after I read your post . All discs were fine. I could see how discs could get stuck if you pressed them into the slot too far. Storing them out of the slots would insure they don’t get micro- scratches over time from sliding them in and out of the slot. But by then, industry standard will be 48K neural implants.
