I’m blaming the pandemic for pulling the trigger on this unreasonable toy...
and I am really glad to have one of those desu-goji in hand. I really like this sculpt!

Awesome sculpt! Are these vinyl or resin? I'm assuming vinyl toys, but with that price tag I'm not ruling out resin. I really like his KKJ (the Godzilla/ goldfish combo), but I just don't have that kind of spending money on a single toy. But I really do like his detailed sculpts! And that desu-cookie is deliciously fantabulous! But, alas, I will have to admire them from afar with those prices.

(Does anyone know why those prices are so high? Does he do super limited runs or something? Does he do everything himself? )

It is soft vinyl like material. It is actually more squishy than Japanese vinyl and smells differently.

Fun fact: Akametenshi wrote a message to -I assume- all people who purchased that Shin Desu about his pricing.

He sculpt and package the toys himself and use his company, which design cars and bikes, resources to produce the toys... So basically, after work hours, some of his employees need to stay put and make the toys, using the same machines as they use for they cars!?!

I find it both endearing and ... a tinsy bit crazy. To me, it speaks to the love Akametenshi has for the hobby. It is a -crazy expensive- side love project for him and part of it is to stay in control of the production from the sculpt to the boxing to their new owners.

Would love to share the entire message. Not sure which thread to post it in.

    Edit: spelling

Awesome, and thanks! His godzillas are fantastic, and that does make more sense (I think) as to why they are so pricey. Maybe someday I'll be able to get one of the KKJ (Godzilla in Koi suit) figures. Thank you for the explanation. I'd love to find out more.

I could have worn that I saw a thread specifically for his toys, but I tried searching and cannot find it. Do you know if he makes toys in Japan, America, or another country? We can maybe start a new thread for his line?

Got him a while back but got slammed with work and studying for finals.
Was more of a local pickup from a friend. Was a major grail for years. He’s got some scuffs but I don’t care, he’s so pretty.

@IzzyRodriguez great Dorbel adoption! I adopted the Sienna, Brown Hong Kong, and Green versions a long time ago, and still love them.

    FYI, a little history here:
    https://coartmag.com/news/feature/jim-woodring-dorbel/
    [IMG]
*I think they were described as "wickedly mischievous!"

These are the variants I think:
    From:
    http://trampt.com/platforms/637/dorbel/items
    and
    http://www.woostercollective.com/post/dorbel-figures-by-jim-woodring

    Dorbel in GREEN
    Dorbel in BROWN (HK edition)
DORBEL in GRAYSCALE (Super-7 Magazine edition)
Dorbel in PURPLE (special artist crossover, colored by Pete Fowler of Monsterism
DORBEL in MONOTONE BLUE (Popsalute edition)
DORBEL in MONOTONE SIENNA (ABC Express edition)

The original Strangeco website had pictures of all of the variants, but is now sadly missing. A big congrats on your Dorbel :dam:

Not the usual Skulldrain fare, but I love these guys. The matte/gloss paint contrast takes 'em to another level.

With hindsight, Strangeco put out a bunch of killer (Western) toys in their time.

Loved the entire Woodring line of toys (still have both sets of egg-capsule newts) including Frank+Pupshaw+Pushpaw, Mr. Bumper; Rocketworld toys, those alligators by Nathan Jurevicius, some Biskup and Baseman capsule toys, but missed out on the uber cute Friends with You plastic toys (ok, don't ban me! ;)), lots of fun stuff!

So cool to know more about Dorbel, @Mr. Humphreys, thank you! I knew of most of those color ways except the purple and blue monotone, AAAAGH! So pretty! I would love to find any other ones! I had a chance on eBay at one point at the Grayscale but alas, I had no funds at the time and it was a pretty penny.

I actually learned from a conversation with Tim Biskup that they actually released Pollard and Dorbel on the same day and even called each other upon discovery! (No ill-will of course, they both appreciate each other’s work and kind of laughed about it).

@IzzyRodriguez please post your Dorbel photos in the Strangeco topic, which is in serious need of a revisit! :)
    http://skullbrain.org/bb/index.php?threads/strangeco.4210/

I'm also looking for the monotone blue Dorbel. Quite hard to find, apparently only 50 were numbered and issued. Thank you for the info on the Pollards, good to know! I also have an Artist Proof of the little blue guy, very pretty too! :D

I went all in on Dorbels, had every variant. SUCH a great toy, perfect 3D translation of Jim's art, wonderful texture, great color combos from variant to variant* and clean, clean paint apps. StrangeCo really were doing it well, when they were doing it. I wonder now who sculpted Dorbel for them... I'll have to listen to that interview, too.

*The only thing I ever took issue with was that damn gold tooth on the purple Nathan J-designed colorway.

@Mr. Humphreys I surely will give the thread a gander and some love in the coming days! I’ve been inspired to take more photos of my lil guy

I agree 100% @ungawa222, such a photogenic sculpt. Wondering who the sculptor was too actually(and if they’ve done more sculpt work for toys since!)

    Meanwhile...unrelated...another boy came in.
    Loving these Rangeas Jrs.

Woah! do you still have them all?!:shock::shock::shock::shock:
I agree re. the purple one, the gold front teeth seems a bit distracting...Also would've preferred a face color other than magenta (also distracting!). The Hong Kong, Monotone Brown, and Monotone Blue are my favs.
