Furthermore, not everyone is going to like everything that every artist does. I’ve had people shit on my photos, say they’re boring, repetitive, same shit over and over, etc. It’s a bummer for sure, because I put a lot of time and myself into this, but when someone else doesn’t care for it, it doesn’t take away how much it means to me. Or how stoked I am on it. Criticisms, good and bad, have helped me shape what I do and don’t like about my photos in a positive way. And when someone says my photos suck, it’s clearly not for them, and that’s fine. There’s others that appreciate it, and most importantly, *I* appreciate what I do(even though I don’t consider it art). Kaws and Kanye are arguably two of the biggest artists in ‘fine art’ and music and I think both of their recent bodies of work are straight trash. Doesn’t mean I’m right. Doesn’t mean I’m wrong. But this is a discussion board where we discuss things. Opinions fly and sometimes tempers flare, but discussions are fun regardless. And sorely needed here.

I also find it extremely ironic that August, who I now know wrote a fuckin’ book about Tsuburaya(super cool) is complaining about the gatekeeping, while also seemingly implying that getting into collecting via Super7 Magazine, or even Kid Robot, somehow delegitimizes one’s opinion. I started out collecting Android vinyl figures, not even knowing what toys were yet, to working in a sofubi factory in Japan six years later and learning A LOT of history behind sofubi. Doesn’t necessarily make *me* legitimate, but I think it speaks to the power of collecting and how sofubi itself can completely rearrange one’s taste.

Thanks for calling out the wrong usage of the term “gatekeeping,” I was cringing but too lazy to say anything about it.

I’m just waiting for someone to put a penis on a cat toy, so the prophecy can be fulfilled and I can quit this stupid hobby.

That would be absolutely horrifying, have you seen a cat’s penis? It’s BARBED. -shudder-

Wait so people talking sh*t about SB? No!

I feel like there’s some backstory here that I was definitely too focused on the kaiju lotteries to notice

also, guy that tells maker not to join community Bc he’s salty calls community gatekeepers. Joke writes itself.

Nagata is the shit. He makes some stuff I really like(his buildings and that chibi tank and some of the mini stuff)and lots of stuff I don't like at all. Same with his paint work. Some is really cool and some is the exact opposite of what I like on toys. Thing is though he is really nice and happy and has more knowledge of old Japanese toys than anyone else I've ever spoken to. Dude literally filled an entire museum with just his vintage Ultraman stuff and he's happy to share his knowledge with anyone. He'll paint pretty much anyone's toys if they ask and he lets people go visit him to learn how to paint with an airbrush and vcolor.

My point is great people can make toys that a lot of people don't like at all. There is nothing wrong with that. I can think some of his stuff is ugly and still know for a fact he's a great dude. Those two things are never mutually exclusive. Insulting someone's work is not the same thing as insulting someone themselves. Learning to separate those two things is pretty fucking important for any artist.

Personally I think critiques and even insults are more important then all the "need" "want" "fire" nonsense from people who probably won't even buy the stuff you make.

That’s why so many people hate my ceramics teacher, if he doesn’t think you’re doing well he’ll flat out tell you. It’s that brutal honesty that keeps me humble.
People with an inflated ego just cry that he was mean to them. Learning that not everything made by your own two hands is beautiful can come as a shock to some people, I guess.
Nobody gets any better at what they do on praise alone.

No real backstory, i always thought he was a great collector and toy maker (and he's obviously a cool dude) but IMO most of his paint-work sucks balls. Of course that's just my opinion, plenty of people love his technicolour efforts.

I believe he's the person mainly responsible for the recent obsession with over-the-top custom paint work, so every man and his dog now think they're a fucking genius with an airbrush, just because they can blend a few colours together in a mushy metallic mess.

A two headed cat toy on an ape body that has four spider arms, with a penis painted in metallic rainbows. But the penis is somewhere unexpected.....

We do see a lot of folk parade by thinking they’re the next MVH or PK and can’t design a toy let alone sculpt one half the time, much less paint it. Not that Doug does that, but one can recall instances of that

This was somethin’ I initially wanted to mention in my tirade, but totally spaced on. I think this is the hardest one for artists to discern.

I literally had someone today tell me that in their opinion it is hard for me to transfer my 2D ideas into 3D and you know what?

i was more taken aback by the unsolicited aspect vs the opinion itself because i know it wasnt an attack on me or my art...just an observation and one that isnt far off from reality!

DUDE!!! Haven't you heard/seen??!!... They do make cat toys with 3 interchangeable balls/penises!! They're called "Crotch Staring Cats." The ones in these photos (in the link) have different types, and I thought each cat comes with its own type of balls (one has a flower, one has a mushroom, one has a penis). I thought this toy was humorous and ordered one on a whim. When I opened the package, the cat had a hole in that spot and it came with a little plastic bag with all three of those different balls!

I still don't have an Imgur account, so here's a link that will show you the cats with penises.

I hope this doesn't actually mean that you'll quit this hobby though!

Nah fuck y'all haters. "Oh this is not a tantrum this is without emotion" then you make direct hits on people with their own visions while you produce none of your own. There is a difference between saying "Nah, not my thing" and saying "You suck put away your crayons". I respect differences of opinions but people who say others SHOULDN'T produce their own visions can frankly go fuck themselves. Art isn't for the fucking timid, and if you don't make your own, then be expected to be called out by those who are willing to put themselves out there. You may have distinctive tastes, that even I respect, (The Moog, you really do have good taste and a great knowledge of history), but if you say you aren't gatekeepers by insulting those with those with their hearts on their sleeves, then you can't smell the shit that you smeared on your own upper lips.

In other words: if you keep hearing "Oh skullbrain has so many haters who say bad things about us" maybe you should look at this dumb fucking meme and stop and think twice for a minute. I've gained many great points, items, and opinions here, but at the same time, this rings true.

For the record, I've never said you should or shouldn't anything. I've simply ridiculed a paint job you did. Its a form of criticism. You are free to carry on ruining toys, and I'm free (until this thread is shut down) to take the piss out of them.

    Get over yourself.

Yeah, nobody is telling you to stop.
Some of us just feel you could do with a bit of critical feedback.
From a group of knowledgeable collectors from whose contributions you’re taking inspiration from.
In the scene you’re trying to contribute to.
With the eye to discern ‘hit’ from ‘miss’.
    At no cost at all.

Here’s some more unsolicited advice: paint less of others toys and keep making your own. They’re far better.

I swear, this hobby is littered with ppl that can’t take a comment in decent stride.

    and yeah, never stop posting
