I think this sums it up for you perfectly. If it feels pointless and drives you insane then giving it up is for the best. If when you step back you realize the toys aren't that important to you then they probably never were in the first place. If the only toys you truly covet come from lotteries maybe you are more interested in the exclusiveness than you are in the actual toys.

For a lot of us toys are the form of art we collect. I believe wholeheartedly that everyone should collect art. Every single person. Doesn't matter if it's posters or movies or stickers or books or comics or stamps or toys or ceramic dishware. We all need art in our lives. Luckily most art is easier to get than sofubi. Lots of it is cheaper too!

As far as sofubi goes I've entered well over three hundred lotteries in the past decade and won maybe 20 of them. Not once have I ever gotten upset that I lost. Or felt like the system was unfairly rigged against me. Or got mad at others who won. Those reactions have less to do with sofubi and more to do with the kind of person you are.

@hellopike : I won the mecha gorrilla-ju back then, when was it, 5 or 6 years ago... at that time, they were like 18,000yen only :)

@Waterbear : I totally agree with you, this is why I will keep at least some sofubi pieces.

I think my biggest issue is that I"m curious and not very patient. When I see something I like, i just want to get my hands on and have a look at it. But at some point, you may find the figure not as interesting as expected.
For example, I was really looking to get the snake/skull figure (can't even remember the name). I managed to won a lottery but once on hands, I just realized how poorly it was made.

I am split on my feelings on one aspect of collecting these toys in the age of Instagram:

Seeing brand new collectors come out of no where with deep pockets, only collecting the newest, hype-est toys as quickly as possible.

Great going guy- you’ve been collecting six months and you’ve amassed 100s of toys, and it’s all butanohana, HxS, RxH adult figures, MVH and headlock.

some days it bothers the hell out of me, seeing these people with more money than patience throwing the secondary market prices all out of wack, and knowing that some (most) of them are simply fair-weather fans that’ll add nothing long-term (or short-term really) to the hobby and disappear one day. Their collection never to be seen or heard of again. That big collector “Messiyiu” comes to mind. He hung around for what, a year or two? Helped drive HxS prices through the roof and moved on to another hobby it seems.

but then on the other hand, some days I say to myself let them collect and drive the the hype to all NNN or TKom or whatever- it leaves the things I collect under the radar because it’s not the flavor of the month.

today is an under the radar day.

@hellopike ”Spending lots of money doesn't make you a collector, it just makes you a chump.”

    - Coop

These nerds that buy their way into the community are only interested in relationships with the artists to consistently pad their social media numbers. And the only other collectors they’re interested in are ones they either know can’t compete with them, or fawn over their collections with praise. Of course, this is strictly my opinion of what I feel I’ve noticed, and not tantamount to all collectors with means. I will say I find it strange that Headlock picked up SO much speed and garnished SO much popularity. Don’t get me wrong, cool as shit to see since I firmly believe Ken and Knuckle deserve it. I’d only been back collecting his toys for a few years before his resurgence at DCon 2018. But he had leftovers Sunday afternoon that weekend, and now he gets like 50+ deep before doors even open. But he does make bigger runs, so it’s easier to see so many more in collections. And it has become a big part of mine; Kustom Monsters and much older figures.

This. But social media - IG in particular - have warped minds so deeply that The Jones' now number in the thousands, tens of thousands, millions, rather than just the well-to-do neighbor down the street. The platform has altered perception of reality so much that we think everyone has it better than us.

But, I just shake my head at the whole conversation. Accept it, move on. Whinging about it isn't going to change a damn thing...as evidenced by 15 years worth of posts on SB, let alone the decades worth of posts on all other collecting forums throughout the www.

An artist friend of mine told me about a collector who butters him up when one of his hype colabs releases are coming out and gives him the cold shoulder otherwise. That manipulation I find to be really gross and toxic to the community as a whole.

I don't get too bent out of shape by the Instagram hype but the idea that many of us are entering supposed "Lotteries" is flat out unjust. It is super annoying people that post all the ridiculous comments then start posting toy pics ahead of a release.

I didn't even care about not getting this but it is exactly the type of nonsense that goes on all the time. There are many other "Lotteries" I'm far more interested in but this is a concrete example of the hook, line and sinker these makers use to generate interest. It is what drives all this noise of individuals basically hyping and providing free marketing in hopes of a "score."

EXAMPLE: Sour Lemon recently had a "Lottery" for their friends of sour lemon. You could submit entry for membership as well as their anniversary toy. To enter you needed to send them a message with your personal information.

They explicitly stated that selection will be held via lottery.

    • Then after the "lottery" an instagram post from them: "Just as a point of note for future releases: If you’ve never shown up on our radar before (in the form of likes/comments), or your feed has zero toy/pop culture/art content, or you don’t even follow the @anti_social_sofubi feed (which seems as shady AF) . . . then it’s likely your submission of interest got put to the end of the list."

So who here is "shady"? Them collecting e-mail addresses for a supposed lottery or individuals who may not have posted pictures of their toys or like enough of their posts?

Guess what. THAT IS NOT A LOTTERY. A lottery is a game of chance where winners are selected randomly. Collecting e-mail addresses and personal information for a shady ass rigged game is shady.

There is a solution and that is about being transparent. Tell people that may enter that you are collecting their information and that they mayy be consider but DO NOT say you are doing randomly selected game to drive more interest.

I understand people are trying to root out resellers or flippers but trampling all over everyone else to do so is just wrong.

It's hard to swallow the idea that the way someone sells their own toys is "unjust" or "trampling all over anyone else".

I find the repost this image to enter and the give my your social security info and cock ring size to enter stuff just as obnoxious as everyone else does but they are toys. You have no absolute right to them at all in any way shape or form. None of the entitlement ANYONE feels towards them makes a lick of difference. Anyone who makes a toy can sell it to whomever the fuck they want however the fuck they want and none of it is inherently wrong.

All the it's not fair bullshit is ridiculous. When someone pays anywhere from 5 to 15 thousand dollars to make a toy they have every right to hook up their friends or family or sell it to the highest bidder or roll around in their toys naked then light them on fire and roast marshmallows over the burning corpses. They owe YOU jack shit.

Obviously I prefer and appreciate the artists who do give random people a decent chance but there is no such thing as selling YOUR OWN TOYS the wrong way.

I literally posted quotes. If you are marketing your goods and collecting personal information and running a lottery you can't just do "whatever you want." That isn't about life not being fair. It is about marketing your brand
Yes, I do fee entitled that someone collects my name and e-mail address for a lottery they are running and only later told it wasn't a lottery. I've given them something (my personal information) in exchange for a chance to win the lottery.

Market and sell your toys however you want but be transparent up front about what you are doing. This isn't my opinion there are basic laws surrounding this kind of collection of personal information.

This was an example. In the case I posted if you haven't done this they don't consider you for the lottery but they only tell you that after the fact. That is my issue. Not trying to create some shit storm over it.
Anyways, new here but not new to toys or life.

People were bringing up liking and reposting and kissing up to artists as being super obnoxious. I was really just trying to point out that many artists/sellers actually make this a requirement even if implicitly to be considered in a lottery.

The Sour Lemon scenario was meant to show this because after the lottery they explicitly said exactly this was one of the ways they choose who wins. This definitely drives people towards this obnoxious behavior.

I've lost many many lotteries and I don't care but I'd prefer people to be a little more up front about their process.

Anyways, I'm not trying to throw Andy or Sour Lemon under the bus. I'm not trying to piss anybody off just trying to engage in a conversation.
