@xSuicide Squadx - I also enjoyed looking at this one. Perfect dark grimy colors on that red vinyl with those glowing eyes. It's a shame that it looks like one of the owners knocked it around a bit -- paint chip on the nose, lip, and forehead. Better condition might have only put the ending price even higher though. Congrats to whomever bagged this bad boy.

Yes, both of these things so much. What an incredible and beautiful example.I don't have any expectations of owning a Bemon Kougai, but I sure would love to all the same. And this sort is nearly a dream version for me, sample or otherwise (even if it was 10,000 piece production). Just love those colours. The vintage IKB vibe is all over it, and executed with such precision abandon. It takes expert painting skills like this, Yuji, etc., to make it look so random and easy. Wow. And, I guess from my point of view and what I have seen even the 'normal' releases selling for, does this not seem to be an incredible bargain at that price? Damn, I would've adopted him easily at that if I could. Thank you so much for sharing, Robert. Ah, at least I'll have those pics to drool over and keep inspiring those ambitious dreams....

@deafmetal I’m just a massive sucker for the Bullmark Minya colors on a lot of toys. Never thought I’d see it on a Kougai! I did notice the chips and such, but when it’s older figures, especially one of this griminess, I tend to find it charming. Adds that “it was played with” feel to it.

@ultrakaiju I would have to say it’s something of a dream version for me, as well! And I also agree, that, even for a sample version, while $1K is absolutely nothing to sneeze at(especially during these times) it didn’t go for as high as I thought! With the IKB feel and aesthetic it actually looks like it existed in kids’ homes and imaginations during the Hedoro’s 70’s peak!

Pay to play and say the name. The only thing I can appreciate about Honda’s aftermarket prices are the *actual* scarcity of his toys. And I very much still appreciate the lore behind his name and the mystique of his person.

Currently on Mandarake for ¥300,000. I thought this was a handpaint, mainly due to the price and the fact that I’d never seen it before. It’s a run of nine, which is rather low compared to his usual 30 - 33. Easily one of the coolest and weirdest painted Kougai I’ve ever seen, and it’s incredible. Bemon simply can’t be touched, no matter how many try. I’d love to be able to shoot this one!

@Anti Social Andy No way, dude!!! It’s so hideous, it’s charming! One of *the* better and best intentionally over textured monsters! These paints are so goddamn outside the box and out there. Something about it as a layman and collector just makes sense to me.

I don't know what that is but I'm sure Andy would slap you in a dash for this opinion. (I happen to be with you, its a nice Kougai)

@BrickBat It was all I could work with, but I think you got the slap/dash combo a little better.

I wish I could study a Kougai enough to come up with some definitive reason why these wild ass paints work on the sculpt. I think inherently it could be because it’s the first, and really only time I’ve ever seen sprays like these on kaiju. If only I could question Honda himself for these color and pattern choices!

I think you can slap most random paint jobs on this baby BECAUSE its so textured. Any paint adds some extra definition to the nooks and crannies, more colors just adds more to look at. Im not a huge fan of rainbow on figures but I feel the Bemon kougai sculpt may benefit from it on occasion.

It’s much for me... and somehow the most bothering thing about this paint app is the nose. I don’t like it pop up like this. Couldn’t say why.
Anyway at this price point it sure isn’t a toy for me.

@nico000 I think the white spray strip just happens to go down the nose and exaggerates it to prominence. I won’t argue that point, but it doesn’t deter me from wanting to own it!

@Urk im glad you said ‘most’ ‘cause you certainly can’t just slap any bullshit on a Kougai and make it work. I’ve seen some awful customs and some just okay ones. I wouldn’t say an actual rainbow paint would be very appealing to me, personally, but the multiplicity of colors used in random is so great. Bemon paints are so experimental and almost look like they were applied haphazardly, but I can’t help but maintain the belief that a lot of thought and intent went into each figure.

Maybe that's why it's 1 of 9 . . . each with different mix combinations but ruined in the same way!

First mixed parts, I believe so. First painted, I’d say clearly not, since toys have been getting airbrushed since the 70’s. Though if you mean first handpaints, like, one offs I’d like to think so!

Speaking of mixed part painted Bemon, here is mine. It’s a custom paint by Rich as the colors might suggest. Haven’t seen it in a long time. It’s sitting in the EU and I’m in California.

From what I’ve read, especially here in old threads, a lot of the blank mixed parts were painted over for customs. I’m not sure how many left the mixed colors breathing, but I generally see full spray coverage.

@hellopike I'm not necessarily disagreeing. It’s like organized chaos for me. At the same time, though, I genuinely don’t think many, if any, could replicate it quite the same! It’s just something so distinctly messy.
