Why did I read this, of course I had to place an order. Not that anyone cares but i'm excited to pick these up:
    House
    Eclipse Series 17: Nikkatsu Noir
    Youth of the beast
    Equinox
    Branded to kill
    Eyes without a face

I care! 'Youth of the Beast' is a great film! Such a twist at the end. I might have to get this and 'Tokyo Drifter'

EDIT: Crap sale is over, oh well next time.

Tokyo Drifter is AMAZING! That finale... Mmmmmmmh. Even better than Branded to Kill, which isn't half bad either!

I really wanted Eclipse Series 37: When Horror Came to Shochiku but it's on backorder and the sale didn't apply to back order items :(

Bummer, but keep an eye out for the next Barnes & Noble Criterion sale. For some reason Criterion themselves don't always seem to have full stock on hand, probably because their discs sell in much higher volume via other vendors. That Eclipse set is a lot of fun, worth having.

Just watched Equinox for the first time. I love the original version. The other version with the extra footage is really bad. The one good thing is they got the actors back to film the new stuff. The extras on this dvd are incredible. Well worth the money.

Totally agreed. The Equinox set is one of many Criterion packages that's much more than just the movie. It's both a tribute to the spirit of independent filmmaking and a marker in the history of cinematic special effects (e.g. Dennis Muren later worked on Star Wars, etc.) I originally saw Equinox as a little kid on late night TV and it spooked the heck out of me. I couldn't get the monsters out of my head. Watching it as an adult, it's just so corny ... hard to imagine it being scary. For a long time it was unavailable, and then for years you could only find it on bad VHS tapes recorded from TV at eBay. I remember being ecstatic when Criterion announced that they had the property. Glad you enjoyed it.

According to the special features the vhs was released by Wizard video so that version was just from a tv print?

  12. Dean

No, frankly I never knew about that version. What I meant was literally homemade tapes of old TV broadcasts of "Equinox" that I used to see at eBay in its early days. If I had known there was a commercial version I probably would have bought it "way back when." I don't know anything about the quality of the Wizard release or whether it was "authorized."

If you go back to the special features and go through the photo gallery there are pictures of the cover and a few covers from oversea releases. The effects are cheesy but so inventive. The giant footage is so cool yet so easy to do.

After reading this I stopped at a B&N on my way home yesterday but they don't stock Blu-ray DVDs, only regular DVDs (?)
I was lucky to get out of there without buying anything else, whoa!

I went looking for the REPOMAN Blu-ray but I had to go order it online instead.

That is weird, our B&N has an entire shelf dedicated to Criterion BR.

My local B&N doesnt carry ANY dvd's or cd's anymore. Same huge store but the movie/music section is now dedicated to kids toys like lego's and thomas the train :x

Damn, that sucks... unless you're into Thomas. ;) Picked up On the Waterfront, Wings of Desire, Naked, Quadrophenia and Dazed and Confused (needed something a little light hearted).

Great set, but fairly pricey - makes me happy I held on to my old box set of the Zatoichi movies. Such a beautiful box set though, I could definitely see why an upgrade would be worth it. Now if they come out with the Lone Wolf and Cup series, that would be something.

I preorde that zatoichi set. Its actually even cheaper on amazon.

Yeah, saw that BR Zatoichi set on Amazon, bam preorder

I just prefer to own BR rather than rely on streaming sites, especially when even if they have the films, they mess with the aspect ratios:

    That price changed fast -
Will wait for cameltracker to email me when it comes back down.
