    Detolf moving question
So I'm moving this weekend and I'm starting to sweat my 12 foot moving truck choice. I've been taking my stuff to the garage and it fills one side of a small two car garage, but i have room to go up I guess as it's not stacked high. I have no bed or couches to move, everything I own is in various sized plastic sterlite tubs (toys, clothes, etc). The only thing not in the tubs are my records and I have them in special boxes (about 20) sized for records. I also have a bike and these four detolfs.

My big thing was I didn't want to have to drive this giant 16 ft truck 6 hours and have a ton of space where things could move around. Better to be tightly packed than empty space. Will have two small cars to throw stuff into also.

Think I have enough space? More importantly I've bubble wrapped the 4 detolfs (and will use blankets/ pillows) but should I put them in first or last in the truck? I'm thinking first and maybe put a pillow in btw each one and then use packing tape to tape them all together, followed by blankets. I'm not disassembling them (but obviously have removed the glass shelves inside). I've disassembled all my other shelving furniture as you can see in the pics.

Oh here's my load if anyone is good at eyeing up what will fit in a Budget 12 ft truck. I measured and it seems good but you never know:[IMG]

You might want to take them apart. they aren't exactly the most structurally sound.. then you could just keep the glass vertical between some things. would cut way down on the space they take up too.

Ehhh I get what you are saying but I really don't want to take them apart. The Expedit shelving unit- no problem was taken apart in 5 minutes. Detolfs I don't know I'd rahter not. I guess if I run out of space I'll have to- but trying to avoid that.

I took mine apart when I moved them because of the lack of structural integrity, but that was also before I had any lighting in them. Setting that up is a pain in the ass. If I had to move them now, I would probably take my chances and leave them assembled.

I hate to say it, man- there's certainly enough work involved in moving- but I'd recommend taking them apart. I would not at all trust moving them assembled in a truck, even heavily padded. And yes, I say this as someone who has owned, assembled, disassembled and moved Detolfs.

If you go ahead with them assembled... fingers crossed for you!

I forgot I have lighting attached inside now. Yeah I'm just going to take my chances i guess. So does all that stuff look like it could fit into a 12 ft moving truck?

I've moved my detolfs twice without any damage, wrapped them up similarly with plastic wrap and tape. Didnt need any pillows but I would suggest putting them in the truck first all lined up against the back wall of truck if possible. To avoid any of the edges getting chipped you can put a towel or furniture blanket over the tops/bottoms.

Looks like a 12 ft truck will do the truck provided its high enough...

You are certainly well organized and well packed for the move! Lucky for you, you don't have to worry about large furniture. Detolfs seem pretty delicate, and I have to agree that disassembling them is your best bet. But...do you have any friends with a truck or van? Can you borrow a field van or field truck from work and have friends help you? The more the merrier.

You'd probably have to lay down a really thick layer of moving blankies (if you are lucky enough to have a van, you could have two buddies sit with the cabinets and minimize them bumping around in the back of a van, or tape rows of empty boxes stuffed with newspaper, to the sides and bottoms--like a suspension cushion?), and then transport them. Risky though! You should definitely see if you can get your friends and your field buddies to help! The move will go faster. Sorry about all the stress and the impact on your life, but having experienced similar circumstances, you will be much better off after the split. Your health, safety, and stress levels will perhaps leave you less "grumpy" :)

I'm big on orginazation! They way I see it those plastic tubs will last forever and since I'll be moving again soon I might as well use them. Plus they stack nice. Unfortunately I'm not moving local- it's a place called North Wales PA which is 25 minutes northwest of Philadelphia. If it was a local move I could probably do the van thing but this is it- 6 hour drive away from here.

I hate moving more than anything. Well the house life was fun while it lasted but unless I get a really nice job where I know I'll be planting myself for a long time- looks like it's back to the bachelor apartment life again once I land work.

Just eyeballing it, I think you'll be ok on space as long as you are thoughtful...especially with two car loads too. As for the detolfs, I'm with you on not taking them apart. I'd rather throw mine off a cliff and start over than disassemble and reassemble them. My instinct is to pack them into the truck last to ensure they aren't squished but then again it might be better to have them towards the center of the vehicle to minimize impact of bumps. Either way, just drive slow, chance it, expect the worst, and hopefully they make it just fine! Good luck dude.

You'll be fine on space. My co. has 18, 24, 26, etc.. box trucks and we load them to take advantage of all the space. If you're going to leave the detolfs assembled I'd buy a roll of stretch wrap and thoroughly wrap each one in it. And additionally buffer them from anything heavy that could mess them up in a hard braking situation. Based on a 6 hour drive you are bound to have at least one situation where you have to brake a little harder than you wanted to, especially if you don't usually drive a truck that size. I'd probably load them last.

I have moved detolfs assembled in the back of my car ... wrapped in a few blankets I had to stop and rethink after a few km's because the interior steel shelf holders were wobbling so badly I was sure they were going to break the glass. They were bashing hard against the glass every bump but I packed a blanket between the interior frame and the glass and made it - only about 20 km but it was good times8)

VERY smart idea (if you're going the assembled route). Those frames definitely tend to wobble like crazy... something to seriously consider in addition to protecting all the outer glass walls.

Moving from Buffalo but grew up and have lived in the tri-state area before ( NJ north and south, Brooklyn, Philadelphia).

Well I white knuckled it driving the moving truck but the detolfs made it safe and sound and are now in a storage facility. I used winter tires and buffered them from the front wall of truck and just packed tight. As far as the storage unit I compromised so toys and records remain here close to me but unfortunately boxed up.

Glad to hear everything made it all right, Lixx. Moving is the biggest pain, and as someone who has been transplanted more than I care to think on, I think there are few things that I find as displeasurable. Hope the new digs turn out very well for ya, and it is just the first step into a much-improved situation, on all fronts.

Thanks, yes I hate moving more than anything. Combine it with a bad breakup, having to look for a new income source, as well as being cut off from some of the only things that give me joy like mixing records and collecting toys, and you have the perfect shitstorm.

I've always been of the mindset with all Ikea furniture of -Don't move it-just buy it again. haha. Detolfs are $60 and getting them from point A to point B in one piece is not worth more than $60 to me.

You know I did not think of that because I thought they stopped making detolfs! Just checked and yes they do- althought just black and white wood finishes unlike the beige natural wood finish I have now (and love). Good to know though. Also happy to actually be in an area where I can access an Ikea (King of Prussia) which is only 15-20 minutes away rather than having to cross the border and drive over an hour into Canada. LOL Yes one more fuck you to Buffalo which I will not miss

Topping this ancient post because I need to know if you moved the Detolfs and how it went. :) Debating following my own advice up there and just re-purchasing! haha

@missy OK so obviously you need two people to load them on a truck. I've moved mine twice (once in a moving truck for a 7 hour journey). The trick is to buffer the glass panels with bubble wrap (see pics above) or tape pillows/cushions around them. Next you want to secure them on the moving truck so they are in no danger of falling over. I usually put them towards the back and surround them with objects that won't allow them to move- but at the same time big enough that they won't crash into them. I.E, a couch etc. Since I packed my 12 foot truck tight last time, I stacked big boxes of records- they are heavy, around them and was fine. It's all about cushioning the glass and making them immobile.
