Sad news that Mr. Briggs passed away yesterday at the age of 88. A literary national treasure here in the UK, i'm not sure how his books faired across the pond but i bet people have heard of some of his better known works. A very talented artist, story teller and marvellously grumpy old man. My childhood would of been less interesting without his books to entertain me, Fungus was a big fave! Thanks sir, for all your great work that generations of kids and adults will continue to enjoy forever. Rest in peace.
There isn’t anything he created that I didn’t like but ‘When the Wind Blows’ captured the fear of a child growing up during the arms race, hoping the MAD doctrine would work, in the 1980s, like nothing else I read or watched. It was both scary, endearing and sad all at once. RIP
Absolutely, for a man known mostly for childrens stories it was heavy stuff. The animated version also including music by David Bowie and Roger Waters, certainly added extra weight too.
I only watched it much later (my 20s/30s); the writing and illustrations were impactful enough! Bowie and Waters were excellent choices to accompany the animation.
Yeah, same here. I was always glad to find the animated versions were handled well, but its on the page with his meticulous artwork that he had most impact. I've never seen the animated version of 'Ethel and Ernest'. I bought that book hardback when it came out and loved it. To see his parents portrayed with such affection and honesty was very moving.
