I think those “80s neon pop culture mashup” paintings are cool cheese and somewhat Depche ala mode.

Whoof. I got Through about half of that... but I did notice that Adam and Man at Arms we’re basically driving the Eternias version of the mystery machine. Lol

I'm seeing more and more Tsuburaya/Toho rip-offs being produced these days... sure you can claim they are "pachi" but something doesn't quite sit right with a lot of these. I would classify Terrible Whore's FuckQ series as pachi, creative enough to use elements to make an actual cool toy.. whereas a maker adding a third eye to Hedorah and shoving a matango in his stomach is just plain lazy fan-art.

I personally think the Terrible Whore Fuck Q’s are a little too smooth, intricate and artistically driven to be pachi, but they are pretty damn great. Even still, he certainly took elements of what they’re derived from and came out with a virtually new approach. That Hedorah just rips elements from multiple renditions of other, existing Hedorah toys and smashes them together with a pointless ass third eye and Matango in the body.

Maybe it's just me, but the new Terriblewhore release feels totally fugly. The Garamon maybe-pachi was nice to look at, if a bit lacking in soul. The 'Kanegon' on the other hand throws out all the charm of the source kaiju. Let's take the beautiful rounded edges and noodly appendages of the original monster, and nullify them with a chunky body, a mono eye and blocky pincers. Bravo.

^^ The giant M.U.S.C.L.E claw hand I could take or leave but the new take on the monster baseball bat is pretty cool IMO.

Was looking forward to replying to an "aggressive" comment directed at me in "self-defense" (quotation marks used purely for making things clear on this board ever since the whole you know.. banning incident.. take it as a disclaimer)

    To quote @kid_miracleman :

"Glenn, contrary to what you think, not everything you aren't into is "going to end up in a landfill". The King Korpse from my show was literally the first item that sold, and he has a dedicated collector base that trades between one another at fair prices. James is one of the nicest dudes I've ever met in the scene and respects the shit out of his fanbase. And I would think a guy who hosts toy shows for an incredibly insular market inviting hype artists wouldn't be so quick to throw stones."

First of all no matter how good my personal taste is, and I must say it is quite exquisite - everything we collect will end up in landfill no matter if it's fugly or not.

And as somebody who has run multiple exhibits (yet who doesn't need to preface anything the say by mentioning it unlike some other guys) I can say that having an item sell first does not in any way validate it's legit status in the sofubi scene. I'm happy to throw stones because unlike many other "curators" out there, SVM just doesn't invite any and every maker out there who will say "yes".. we actually curate our shows you know? We try and weed out the fugly shit (even though in the early days a couple of things slipped through...) and present artists that we have an interest in.

So in an effort to spice things up a bit and give myself an entertaining read during my day at work, I present a long overdue submission to the fugly thread.. by the way I'm sure James is a nice guy, but we are separating art from the artist here. King Korpse looks more suited towards being a mass-produced movie tie-in toy on the shelves of Target for a fraction of the price - which in all fairness could just be a result of James Groman working for big commercial companies doing exactly that. I see it as being fugly in the sense that it just doesn't sit well at all next to other sofubi toys that have a simple but strong charm to them.

Click thru to see the toy.

Posted this more for the dodgy paint job rather than any dis towards the sculpt or maker.

So, its an old Calpis logo that was changed in 1981 because of its racist connotations, very much like the Takara logo was changed in 1984 for the same reason. My question would be, why has this chuckle head waited to 2019 to do a paint homage for a racist logo? Other than just trying to be controversial etc?

I was surprised to see this from Longneck. Someone had brought up him doin’ it once before with another one of his toys, but I can’t seem to recall it. Regardless, it’s in such piss poor taste and just as childishly, shittily edgy as the Hitler trash.

I believe you are thinking of the primitive native doll that VVC attempted to produce based on the old Takara logo? Longneck never made anything in this vein prior.

As a totem, it can serve a purpose.

If every thing in history is washed over, the cycles continue. If one paints a doll based on old controversial art, only the artist knows the intention. If some of you start saying Yoda is racist, you are doing so with an objective of appearance.

As a totem, this Longneck doll serves the purpose of a lightning bolt to thoughts and perception. Conversation begins, understanding and disclosure etc.

Outsiders will talk and discuss the matter as they feel in regards to their social contacts. How is this bad form but Hirota using Coco Brazil as a "Brutal Monsters" accepted?

At least with Yoda, Death Menargo in all its attachments, is a totem of Horror, as it always has been. I don't condone nor disapprove of Yoda on this, since only he can answer the intentions.

    Perhaps ask him directly?

If you'd like a home-spun variation on this, the easiest example I can think of is a certain plot point in Ghost World, the movie.

@kichigai I think history has more than enough racists “totems”. A group that’s been discriminated for hundreds of years doesn’t need this reminder.

Wether Yoda has something positive or negative to say with this piece, making this in 2019 just seems tone deaf and only offensive.

This goes for any toy maker, trendy or not.

Yoda also did a black face Yoda-Q toy. He just didn’t post it on his Instagram. It was sold through another outlet. I can’t remember or care who the outlet was.

    @Kerk1

Totem are not in and of themselves racist, they are inanimate objects covering many taboo subjects. Have you or anyone else considered telling your thoughts directly to Yoda?

He speaks English well enough to understand, so if this is something you feel strongly about, reach out to him.

Your thoughts on Hirota using Bobo depicted as a monster? Wonder how his surviving family would feel seeing him portrayed in that manner.

Point being, perhaps moot, but Bobo was a living human being. While this new Menargo is a vinyl monster doll painted up like an old paper advertisement, offensive or not.

VVC did not produce that. Kikkake did. They attempted to exhibit it for Kikkake’s solo exhibition but after receiving feedback they removed it.

For the record, the blackface Yoda Q was posted alongside accompanying photos of African tribesmen when the lotto was on. Obviously the guilty parties found it humorous and not some “totem” for deep contemplation. These are neo kaiju makers not people with amazing politically fueled artwork. That’s neither here nor there. I just found it funny that I saw people whinging about Kikkake gave Yoda and Nag a pass at the time.
