In the wake of Snowpocalypse 2010, the National Weather Service has released new naming conventions to indicate heavy levels of snowfall. The new names are:

Marusan Standard Size - More than 8.5"
Bullmark Giant Size - More than 12"

Sources for weather-related news are advised to adopt these standards as soon as possible, particularly the little monster-shaped graphics for the maps.

I’m so glad we don’t have to deal with that shit here in Colorado. I mean it gets cold, but not really that cold. It’s actually supposed to be 50 here this upcoming weekend.

Tried to find the right thread. This seems right. My daughter and I are hunkered down here in Texas starting round two of power outage with temps in the teens. Ice and five inches of snow on the ground in Austin, which I've never seen in 20 years. Plus more freezing rain tonight.

We did get a few hours of power this afternoon, and the pipes haven't burst yet, but it's probably just a matter of time.

At least my cell service has been solid and I managed to snag the Marmit Captain Ultra Joe with the brown shorts I've been looking for. :)

Hope other Texas brainers are doing OK!

Stay safe, Blake! Unreal situ out there- just called a buddy in Austin. He and his fam are doing okay... but it's in the 40s inside their house. For others though- elders, sick people- this has got to be pretty dire. Be sure to leave your faucets on at a trickle, that can help prevent freezing!

I live in an apartment, and the pipes already burst. (I have been dripping all my faucets, I swear!) They shut off the water about an hour ago. I remembered to fill some jugs for drinking, but neglected to fill the tub so we could flush the toilet. My already mad teen is going to be madder. :(

Sorry to hear this Blake. I've been wondering how people experiencing these record colds cope. How do you stay warm when it's freezing and below freezing?! Hope everyone is managing to stay safe and warm, especially the seniors and those with medical conditions. Thinking of you all and hoping the weather improves soon!

p.s. glad to hear you got the toy (priorities! :))

Sorry to hear as it must be incredible stressful and I've heard nightmares about what this has done to the community.

Thanks for the kind words. We have had some mental hardship, but not so bad. I have no idea when we will have water again. Im thinking two weeks at the earliest. Other folks who just had service cutoff but no busted pipes should get it back faster, but who knows. We have had consistent power for more than a day, and I had enough food in the house that did not go bad. I failed to fill the tub while the water was running, so I have been melting snow today to flush the toilet. So dumb.

I think I was lucky living in a first floor apartment with only one exterior wall. It only got down to 55 inside when it was in the teens outside. I have talked to people whose houses got to below freezing inside. I have a coworker that depends on dialysis. I have not heard from her and really hope she's OK.

My teen is like, Dad, this is what life is like for people my age. It's one thing after another and we can't rely on anything. She's said this before, but it did not really click for me till this week. Even with the pandemic. I don't have much confidence that any true systemic changes will occur in Texas to prevent this happening again. I just signed a new lease a couple weeks ago, and I'm starting to see that as a deadline to make some big changes. This storm is not going to shake Texas' go it alone attitude, and I'd rather find somewhere more community minded for me and my kid. Mandarake can ship me toys pretty much where ever I live

This resonates for me. My youngest is 7 which means for 60% of his life Trump was the president and for 15% of his life there's been a global pandemic.
Having been affected (albeit not tragically) by wildfires the last several years here in northern California I feel for everyone who is suffering as a result of these natural and unnatural disasters. These things are getting to be too regular.

February 2019 was the hottest ever on record in the UK, February 2020 was the wettest and February 2021 is on track to be the coldest.

Looking forward to February 2022 and the plague of locusts!

We keep telling our (now grown up) kids to enjoy their lives and don't bother having kids . . . the world's FUBAR and is only gonna get worse!

I think that is the same advice I will be giving to my kids. That said, once Bill Gates has all the chips implanted in us and we read his new book maybe the world can be saved. I am VERY mildly optimistic that we can un-fuck ourselves with technological advancements and massive changes in energy and usage habits. That said, the best case scenarios seem pretty bleak.
