Does anyone out there collect animation cels? My wife loved the cartoon Ulysses 31 when she was a kid and recently mentioned that she wouldn't mind grabbing a cel from the show. I did a bit of searching and didn't come across much. If anyone has any good leads on places to grab cels, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I really want to but it can get quite pricey depending on what you want. And if you get more than lets say a character foreground the price can shoot up even higher. But i love cell animation pieces ether way.
Way back in the day (80s) I used to have a few. They are becoming rarer now that everything is done on computer.
When I was in Tokyo recently I saw a bunch and was surprised at how available they still seem to be (all at a couple different Mandarake shops).
If it's not a "key pose" the cels can be pretty cheap. Sometimes you can get the cleaned up drawing with the inked cel. If you want background art with it, it can get expensive. There are a lot out there for 80s and 90s cartoons. There's always 1 booth that's all cels at sdcc, and maybe wondercon, selling everything and anything. It's fun to browse through what he has.
I have an animation cell from Samurai Pizza Cats with an original painted background. Of course, it's sitting in my room... Until I move out and actually have wall space.
I actually picked up a boat load of Samurai Pizza Cat Cels a while back during SDCC. I only have space to display 4 of them.
I have a few Ren & Stimpy cels. They were around $150 each I think, which isn't too bad but I've seen cels for way cheaper from shows that aren't as popular. It's also important to note that the backgrounds you see with most cels are just printed reproductions of the actual background used for that scene. Sometimes a dealer won't even have a background at all, so it's just an acrylic sheet with a painted character on it, I've seen those go for like $30-$40. @wingnut0 Maybe try reaching out to an animator or creator from the show and see if they can provide some direction for you?
I have a handful of cells. I used to have photos of them, but I can't seem to find them. When (and if) I uncover my cels, I will share photos here. Hopefully this weekend. I do however have a photo of a recent original artwork painting I obtained. I think it might have been used in a magazine like Terebi-Kun, but I cannot confirm.
OK, finally managed to locate them and snap a few pictures. (And Photobucket is really not making this easy! I had a hell of a hard time over the past few days getting the site to let me login, and then to properly orientate the photos. The site seems crazy bugged lately. Even now I just can't get them to be right-side-up. I rotated them repeatedly, and it keeps showing them rotated when linking them (although I finally have them appearing properly on their website) no matter what I import and/or edit through photobucket itself.) Not all the best subject matter, but they were all extremely affordable and more of curiosity pickups / future framed wall decorations. Bonus points to anyone who can name all the source material. (This is my favorite - great subject matter)
I have over 70 of these im going through right now from The Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog. Pretty good stuff to!
Really interesting @Headhunter - dig the Bravestarr ones. What other shows do you have in that lot of 70? Was this something you picked up en masse, or did you mean you were going through your own collection? (if the former, let us know the 'spares' )
Isn't that the best way to do it? I mean, by comparison, one could argue one of the major things which made MOTU so successful is just incorporating every possible things under the sun (and beyond it). Sword and sorcery, science fiction, classical fantasy, ninjas, giant insects, lizardmen, cyborgs, warrior princesses, rock people, ghosts, wizards, cyborg headed elephants, dinosaurs,.... all alongside each other. I mean, there was something for everybody, no matter what your fancy.
I actually have a really weird set of animation cells I am getting ready to frame and put up. I Wil round them all up and take pics some super fun stuff.
That 70 is bulk Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog cells. I've got a lot more Bravestarr as well. Everything I'm buying is bulk except for a few pieces. I have a small amount of Mutant League as well.
I have heard that framing cells can result in faded lines, so maybe frame and hang behind some swanky black velvet curtains.
Or just make sure you got heavy currents to keep light out if your framed work is in a room with windows. There is also a more expensive option for custom framing where you can opt out normal glass for special UV plexiglass.
