Here's a photo of my old standard sized Takatoku. He may not live with me any longer, but that doesn't mean that I don't love him!

Found this pic online somewhere. This Bandai Kikaida 01 is my precious right now. I literally search for pics hoping to get another glimpse. Pathetic right?:

I would not say that is pathetic at all. We all do it - well, I do anyways. And I would say that is a sign of being a real collector and appreciator of these toys. This isn't just some fly-by-night, spur on a whim interest. I have googled and saved tons of pictures, and just love discovering new views and photos of toys out there, even if they are not for sale or I can't afford them.

What is much worse, on a personal level anyways, is the shear amount of time I have spent poring over and analysing the detail and paint minutiae in toys, and drawing comparisons between them; especially for tiny or really horribly grainy images. Oh, the many hours we devote to this hobby. But I wouldn't say any of it is wasted!

This is the one Brian was referring to, right? I am not sure why its said that this is so hard to obtain. I've seen plenty over the past few years, especially on ebay. Granted, its not cheap. But it is available.

No that's the Takemi Light Up I was mentioning earlier:

I know Bandai Kikaida 01 comes around, just haven't seen one in a bit except on YJA- which they always go for a mint there.

Well, not vintage, but did a quick photo shoot with this MaxToy clear version today. Really love the clear vinyl figures, and the inserts on this one are very nice. I know it can be more difficult to work with, but I wish more modern companies would take on clear/cyborg guys. MaxToyCo did a great job on these guys.

And for good measure (since I have already broken the 'rule'), here is my other MaxToy version of the regular Kikaida. I highly recommend picking these guys up if you have the chance. An excellent figure, and perfect substitute to a vintage figure for someone on a budget, and for the others who already have vintage Kikaidas, well they fit right in!

It is a Kikaider bootleg of the 70s very similar to the licensed made by Takatoku.

Vintage Kikaida TakaToku with Bandai sticker.
I already had some time trying to catch one of these but for some reason or another I always let them pass or asked for them in the last minutes of the auction.

You do a great score, this sculpture has something that always catches my attention, it is also a delight to see a toy of these in such good condition as yours.

    _________
Interesting article from Mandarake that appears to have been written 16 years ago...

I grew up in Hawaii during the 1970's watching Kikaida and Kikaida 01 on TV and played with the different toys from both series that were imported from Japan. While I started to hear rumors of a Hawaii or export version of the standard size 01 once I restarted my toy collection as an adult, I've never heard/read an explanation for how the rumored Hawaii/export version varied from the one made for the domestic Japanese market.

To be honest, I'm sort of skeptical about what the Mandarake article says. (I should acknowledge up front that my take on the article is based on a machine translation that may or may not be 100% of what the authors intended).

First, I've never seen a 01 with a flesh colored vinyl torso that the article states is one determining factor. I've seen dozens of 01 vinyls over my life as it was all over the place when I was a kid. While I admit that I didn't examine each one to see if it was made of flesh colored vinyl, I think I would have noticed this distinction at some point (i.e. when seeing paint scratches that reveal a flesh color underneath) if all the ones sold in Hawaii were made of flesh colored vinyl.

The article also mentions the occasional difference in the red and blue coloring on the limbs compared to the torso as another distinction of a Hawaii/export version. I've always thought the color variation might be due to a slight difference in the mix of ingredients used to create the vinyl used to cast the parts. Since the ingredients were likely mixed together by hand, I can see how a little too much (or too little) of one ingredient could slightly alter the finished color of the vinyl. The article attributes the color difference to painting over the flesh colored vinyl. I'll have to go back and see if any 01's I come across were made with a flesh color vinyl torso that was immersed in paint to make the exterior red and blue.

The article also indicates that the silver paint used on the Hawaii/export version had a "metallic" finish to appeal to foreigners which leads me to think the authors of the article thought that a 01 with a flat or matte silver finish was made for the domestic Japanese market.

As a long time collector of vintage vinyls from the 70's, I know how condition-sensitive the metallic paint used on vinyl figures can be. I always thought the current day appearance of metallic paints depends on how a vinyl figure was stored over the decades. Depending on the environment (i.e. temperature, humidity level, dust, etc.), the surface of metallic paint may or may not oxidize over the years. If it does oxidize, the metallic finish will end up with a dull and matte finish. If it doesn't oxidize, the paint will retain it's original metallic finish.

I've seen metallic paint oxidize on a number of different vinyl figures (i.e. Bullmark's missle-firing MechaGodzilla and giant size Strong Zaboga are two examples that come to mind) which makes me think there was not a difference in the type of metallic paint used in the domestic/Japanese 01's versus the 01's made for Hawaii/export markets. I think it's more so a case of how the figure was stored over the past 4-5 decades.

I think the notion of a Hawaii/export version of 01 stems from the fact that the figure was widely available for sale in Hawaii back when it was originally released in the 1970's. The original Kikaida TV series was a huge cultural phenomenon when it first aired in Hawaii. As a result, there were a ton of toys from both series sold in Hawaii.

By comparison, although not by any means programming flops, I've read that the original Kikaida and 01 series were nowhere near as popular in Japan compared to what was basically "Kikaida Mania" in Hawaii. This could very likely be since tokusatsu super hero robots fighting a different monster each week were new and novel in Hawaii compared to Japan which was much more familiar with this sort of kids' TV programming.

Back in the 1990's-2000's, I knew a former vintage toy dealer in Hawaii who used to post ads in the local newspaper with pictures and buy prices for certain old vinyl figures. Pink Hedora, MechaGodzilla, King Bockle -- he had pictures of them in his ad and the price for each he was willing to pay in cash. He'd then pack a couple of suitcases filled with his buys to fly to Japan to do the rounds of the different vintage toy shops where he'd sell the vinyls he'd bought locally.

I remember him telling me once that, on one particular trip to Japan, he had so many standard size 01's for sale that one store owner skeptically asked if he was manufacturing them in Hawaii. At the time, the 01 was a hard to find vintage vinyl in Japan so the store owner couldn't believe how a person could walk into his store and have so many of them available to sell.

In my opinion, this sort of story helped contribute to the notion of a Hawaii/export version of the standard size 01. While it's clear there were Hawaii/export versions of some Bullmark monsters that had very different paint schemes from what was sold in the domestic Japanese market, I don't think that most other vinyl figures sold in Hawaii/export markets were made with any intentional, significant differences in the same way as the Bullmark monsters.

I could be wrong, but that's my take on the whole idea of an intentional, significantly different Hawaii/export version for most vintage Japanese vinyls.

I thought the only difference was a 'Made in Japan' sticker on the foot of the export version of the standard 01, I remember hearing about this years ago but don't really remember the details.

This site shows a bagged version with 'Made in Japan' sticker on the header and refers to it as 'Export Specification' (machine translation), so who knows....

That's a cool website. I've never seen that one before.

I'm inclined to agree that the only difference in most vintage vinyls sold in Hawaii/export markets was the addition of the Made in Japan stickers on the product and outer packaging. I think the idea of unique versions made exclusively for Hawaii (and other export markets) is probably more myth than reality with the well documented Bullmark monster variations being the only exceptions.

@blue227 Thank you for sharing so much information! I totally agree with you, and also found it very weird that Mandarake said the Hawaiian version is based on flesh vinyl, especially because the one they showed in the article is apparently based on red vinyl. It seems the Kikaider 01 is dubbed as "Hawaiian" only because most of them were exported to Hawaii back then. And even now Kikaider 01 is much more expensive in Japan than in America.

BTW, I actually bought mine from a Hawaiian dealer. I just miss a Kikaider 01 on YJA at the time, and happended to find another one on ebay a few days later. So I am pretty lucky getting my Kikaider 01 at a much cheaper price.

I don't know if I should leave to the “strange or weird auction" thread, this yellow eyed bottleg Kikaida ended at 381K yen! I know there are various kinds of Kikaida bootlegs, but is this one a super rare variant I didn't know or is this just a insanely nonsense acution??
