Okay, this one is next level cute. Johnny Akihito returns with his second entry into Headlock’s foray of soft vinyl offerings. MYCE is another perfectly translated, 3D toy from Johnny’s 2D paintings. The size and roundness makes it a great toy to handle and look over, as well as easily displaying anywhere and everywhere, reminiscent of BxH toys of old. Very warm, woodland colors to the paint! Butt cheeks, buck teeth, cherub whisker cheeks and smile, and a vest patch, overall this cheese chomper looks like a Chuck E. Cheese animatronic, and I’m all about it. Very interested to see what colors come next!!! Spoiler
2 recent pickups from DCon London – the CB Diablo and a custom smiley Shinigami Megane Very happy have both in the collection! and here was the queue at Ko-Re Ko-Re as soon as the doors opened on Fri...I'm pretty sure that they were the only stand with visitors for the first hour or so some cheeky buggers even started queuing behind my desk!
Just a quick lil’ diddy. I’ll have the same ol’ Infinity Glass Style Studio Shot™️ song and dance here soon.
Love this clear blue vinyl. Very translucent, but still so vibrant and saturated in its shade! The purple sandals and light blue charm are so complimentary to the base, and the loin cloth sets off a nice breakaway for the eyes. Another home run from Headlock, and a great release through ISH. Spoiler
There was no shortage of Headlock available at DCon, in terms of releases, between the Creature Bazaar and ISH booths. Out of ISH we get both the new GID Great Garloo and the debut release of the Cyclops! We’re familiar with the Great Garloo, but this new Cyclops sculpt is awesome! Originally coming from a show at Sunny Daze in August of 2020, put on by Psycho Wheels, Knuckle had sculpted these solely legged Cyclops heads out of resin and mounted them on wooden platforms donning plaques. Justin, with his use of the Harryhausen license, proposed to Knuckle this be made in sofubi. And here we are! It’s goofy. It’s cooky. But it’s fun! Spoiler And of course, there’s the returning classics!!! Spoiler
Thank you for sharing the back story of the Cyclops! The original color on the resin sculpt is looking great too! I imagine we might see it coming in vinyl.
@animator I found it so interesting that they chose to produce the entire run in the exact same mixed parts. No one can ever possibly trade and swap to make a solid. Never seen that done before!
It seems to me like Headlock has dramatically increased their production run for their most popular toys (last Flying Freak seems to appear everywhere, the Devil Creatuur Bazaar too, that mixed part one, I think the bride was too but I havent seen much of the last two cats, the halloween one and the pink one). Do you guys have the same read? Does that affects in any way your appreciation and desire to collect those toys? It's very much the opposite take as many artists people seems to have grudges with here. I imagine having their production in China and it being different from what Japanese are doing makes it possible for them to do so.
I don’t think it’s so much that Headlock is ramping up the production numbers, as it is that Ken’s been spreading releases around globally. You’ll see some of the same release in Taiwan, Japan, US, etc. So it looks like there’s more in existence as they’re more spread around the world to collectors. With the numbers at Creature Bazaar’s DCon booth there really wasn’t that many, especially in comparison to how many people were lined up. Onto the meat and potatoes of my post: Frankie’s Bride!!! What a beautiful entry into the Kustom Monsters line! She’s perfect!!! Knuckle very much kept continuity alive with the facial features and “bone” structure of Lil’ Franky, but also brought so much of Elsa Lanchester’s portrayal of the Bride to life! The hair, the eyebrows, the smirking lips. Everything presented here comes alive very well. Beneath her dress is a bandaged body, though I will say her hair is quite top heavy, and makes her difficult to stand without the dress to balance. So be weary if you’ve yet to remove the first layer of garment! The colors between her skin, her eyes, lips and the bandages/hair all work so wonderfully together. It comes off as what I’d imagine her to organically appear as, as if the ‘35 film were in color. This is another one that’s got me extremely interested if he continues to make more versions down the road. Spoiler
The vinyl dress was a very fun surprise I didn't expect! I love getting sofubi in hand and finding a design element I had no idea about.
Yeah, I did not expect you would be able to remove the dress like that! Maybe that means a Mummy toy is coming soon…
@kid_miracleman @Russblue11 @bryce_r The removable dress was quite the surprise to me, as well! Though I will say it’s a bit of a chore to reassemble her getting the dress back on. There’s a little impediment, particularly at the neck, to get her head reattached. But that’s a non - issue in the grand scheme of her build! A woman mummy would be fantastic, being the body already exists! What’d also be cool would be somethin’ of an Invisible (Wo)Man with a bandaged body and a clear, unpainted head. Sort of a reversal to Dr. Griffin’s appearance of the classic bandaged face and trench coat.
We certainly need a mummy! And thanks for doing the effort to removing that dress ! I m enjoying seeing the pics and will keep mine on. I noticed in early pics that the dress was shorter and we could see the the mummified feet. I think they made the right decision going with the longer dress yet it was pretty cool seeing the feet and being able to imagine the whole body.
It is a great piece and considering it was originally posted in January, one that felt like it was a long time coming; however, definitely worth the wait. I'd be surprised if we didn't see a Mummy - the legs and arms are already done - and it certainly fits into the Uni Monsters theme.
@Mr Fox There certainly was a lengthy gap of time between a reveal and release, but as you said, well worth the wait! Legs and arms do make for a strong possibility of a Mummy release, and if they continue diving into the Universal lineup it’d be so great to also see Dracula come to life!
This was a difficult toy to shoot, but it’s still such a damn fun one. I was surprised by just how thin and flat laying this rug release is. Ken and Blue Hip Studio took to the rug approach quite literally, as this genuinely looks like it could be a decorative centerpiece in a sofubi toy’s living room, even if cliché in front of the fire place(and that’s not a bad thing)! As demonstrated in the second photo the flatness also provides for a cool platform for other toys to stand on top. I’ll never get tired of the Tibeo’s happy face. Spoiler
Congrats Bob. Looks great. Unfortunately, I don’t have much success with local lottos, so missed out on both G.Cue and Grey Myce, which was a shame.
@Mr Fox cheers! To be honest having scored both the pink Yoshio and red Chino last month I was fully expecting to miss out this time so was proper surprised when I got the invoice. Hopefully you have better luck next time!
