Man! I’ve been trying to boost my Irutan collection over the last 15 years. It’s tough out there, hence why I’ve restored to tattoos cause it seems the sofubi is out of reach.

Those recent prices on the vintage dino vinyls are wild. I wonder if they are just from old collectors trying to complete a line, or overflow from the newer deep pocket collectors.

There was that Tatsumi Mook about dino toys that came out last year, it could have sparked renewed interest.

I can't believe that what happened when people chase for vintage or Kaiju monster. You can't found any good stuff under 10,000 yen now!!!

oops . . . looks like that Mayogon auction was cancelled because no bidders are showing. I guess 27.1 K Yen was not enough.

Well, it is a coin bank. How many coins can you save when a 3" plastic bank costs 27.1?

The previous one had ink on the back of the toy though which always seems to take off a large percent of top bidders. That said, I agree that vintage prices are way up on most things.

Apologies if this is the wrong place to discuss this, but any thoughts on the recent batch of fantastic vintage bullmark/marusan figs? i'm not sure about you guys but most look a little *too* new and shiny to be vintage. Or I'm wrong and they're some of the cleanest and vibrant examples i've ever seen.

Great question Brian. And maybe not the best place, but hey, who is paying attention to vintage these days except a couple of us diehards - so I am fine letting it slide. ^_^ So, there is always that certain level of question when it comes to toys that have had reproductions/reissues (especially the many eras [and companies of Marusan/Bullmark sculpts), but after looking a good number of these auctions and examining the photos in detail on several, I think - to me - these all 'feel' right. We were discussing elsewhere, but actually I think the incredible condition you've highlighted there is one particular reason this grouping is so unbelievable. Not only are there some truly incredible toys included (e.g. rare versions), the condition of them and others is, to be frank, astounding, for toys of this age. You could easily make up one of the greatest vintage toy museum displays with just some of these, let alone the whole lot. I would honestly suspect these were put away in a box somewhere and never touched by any child (or few people, for that matter). In fact, purely speculating here, but given the combination of breadth, condition, rarity, and number of toys here, and then lack of any packaging, I would not even be surprised to learn these had some supplier/production connection to them.

Getting back to the question, in short, to me these toys seem legit. While there have been some very incredible 'customs' in vintage paint schemes, the ones which stand out (e.g. past auctions on YJA) have largely been called our directly as such, and are made as tributes to the vintage toys. The Bullmark Mechagodzilla is a notable example from the past couple years. I don't think these are attempts to pass off new toys as the original thing. I think also there is the aspect of having this large grouping, which in a roundabout way lends credence to the whole, and therefore all of the toys contained within it. For sure this is not a definitive thing, but when you look at all the small factors together, including the strong bidding already which suggests others too see the incredible offering here, I think it actually leads to a more confident story, if you know what I mean.

Whatever the case is, these are some unbelievable toy listings, and the best we have seen in a good while [even discounting that there has seemed to be a bit of a dry spell on truly choice vintage toys]. I would love to know the [hi]story of this toy lot. Whoever this seller is, and wherever these toys came from, there are going to be some very empty wallets come next week. And a lot of envious people who can only watch from the sidelines, myself included.

PS - anyone want to contribute to the dream sofubi bank??

This king size Doragiras from the other day is drool worthy. Incredible paint condition . The end price was actually pretty decent compared to what some far more common toys have been selling for.

^^ A simply epic toy. It was a pleasure just to see one of these come up for sale, and a dream to have one. I am also a little surprised it didn't end far higher than it did, especially with the surge in vintage toy prices. I think I can only surmise it must have been due to a combination of (a) not being 'hyped' enough as a vintage character maybe, and (b) people mistaking it for the smaller [but still 'giant'] size. I love this sculpt dearly, and definitely wish I could have been in on this auction. Even with some cracking, this condition and paint is immaculate, and such a hard toy to find. At that price I consider it a veritable bargain. In any case one I won't soon forget.

Giant Takkong aside , this morning saw the end of auctions for a monumental lot of Marusan near mint/dead stock toys. That teal-winged Dodongo is one of the most beautiful vintage toys I have ever seen. It sold for 1,101,000 yen:
