I’m not sure I get the hate on this one. It’s a fairly sizeable mascot toy and one off w/box, $640 seems on par with what other people are charging.

As far as the actual sculpt, it’s fun to see an artist known for highly textured sculpts experiment with smooth clean simple lines. It’s absolutely in the same vein as bearbricks, Kaws, etc. and I think that’s kind of the point.

Like nearly all of the figures pilloried in this thread, I didn't have any of that context. I don't even know who the artist is. I stick to my opinion that the sculpt is not very interesting, but I guess I was wrong to assume that it was a small scale figure that was being made in an edition of 30 to 50 or so.

So How big is it, exactly, and is it just an edition of one?

But keep in mind, here's the gold standard I am going to compare it against, a low-run, 46 centimeter tall licensed figure that costs 38,500 yen:

@Roger scrolling this thread and seeing a M1go Hedorah got me super confused for a second.
I like everything about that new mascot. I will try to get my hands on a black blank if that ever get released. Not for the price of a Hedorah though.

    Here are some beauties:

My opinion on the price notwithstanding, I don't think it's fugly. I try to not let other factors cloud my opinion about what I think is fugly.

To me, it looks like a mash up of fight figure and art toy. I don't think its his best work, but I actually quite like it.

I guess I need to understand the context here, but have to agree with Moog that personally, while it is not the sort of thing I would collect, I don't find it fugly by any standards, let alone in contrast to what other 'toys' populate this thread. But fair enough. People also would probably keel over laughing if they saw the sort of funds I spent on 50 year old dried up plastic dollies which look like unidentifiable monsters from some bootleg artwork, that kids has markered on.

I did immediately get the sense from that pic that this was a 'giant' figure, even without any things to gauge proportion (so I don't know how big it actually is). So price-wise, that doesn't come as much as a sticker shock to me either. The M1 Hedo is probably an unfair comparison [as are most things Yuji produces.... kind of liking quoting a Butanohana retail sticker price]. And honestly, even though it is just as a reference, it does kind of hurt to see it pop up here in any degree. So basically, I don't know anything about this toy, maybe the detail and backstory helps where you're coming from; while it is not for me, I feel it very much matches a current 'soft vinyl' aesthetic' so neither its appearance/execution or sales are jumping out at me as being particularly out of the ordinary.

Even for a mascot figure going for a soft vinyl aesthetics it’s not done well. It is so simple idk how you could even call it a mascot. It honestly looks like a DIY blank figure from a random kickstarter. I’m all for artists getting paid but this is just a mass produced blank. I feel like it’s pulling from so many different concepts while not hitting any of them.

I want to re-emphasize that I was holding up DX Hedorah as the gold standard, the thing I am going to compare any large expensive sofubi against. Many toys will never reach that gold standard but they should at least aim for it if they are charging hundreds of dollars for what they are selling.

Not sure if this masterpiece has already found its place here. Probably ok to repost it.
Now, is there a version of that thing in rainbow vomit?

Looks like 'Multiple Miggs' has been busy. Another plastic nightmare conjured up from inside the mind of a serial killer. Rancid flesh, weeping sores, maggots, and a greasy cock and balls for that touch of class ... you know, the usual things people look for in their toys.

Its just fucking putrid. It looks like it stinks enough to make your eyes water. Please, somebody set fire to the damn thing and put it out of its misery.

After reading about that poor girl who died fused to her couch for 12 years, this steaming pile of garbage becomes even more vile.

I feel like these toys are the ultimate creative cop outs; it’s easy to think up what’s going to make everyone cringe—boils, sores, stitches, misplaced/oversized genitalia, skulls, bones, too few/many eyes, blood splatter, puss, patches of hair, deformities, company mascots given the silent hill treatment etc. ooooh! Shocking!!! Zzzzzzzz you don’t even have to have an opinion to come up with details. just tap into the “shit no one wants to see on purpose database “.

I still haven’t seen a mouth full of food…but maybe some “genius” will bless our senses with that “stunning” detail on their next plastic bowel movement.

I’m not saying that if you like shit like that you have poor taste…or people shouldn’t make what they like— to each his own. But I do feel that if someone gave me a collection of these toys, I wouldn’t be satisfied simply trashing them. I would need to make sure no one would ever lay eyes on them again, so renting a wood chipper wouldn’t be out of the question.

    then burn the wood chipper.

It’s hard to to imagine meeting the guy who made this, and not asking him, “what are you? Some kind of asshole? You worked on that?”

With respect, it sounds like you are totally saying peeps who commit that kind of turd and the ones throwing money at it and displaying it have poor taste. And that is reassuring.
That thing managed to be both lazy and horrendous at the same time.
People collecting that stuffs are in need of an intervention.

Also, now, thanks to you @Vombie I’m imagining a head with revulsed eyes and a huge open mouth chewing rainbow painted shit. Maybe it has a butt and it’s regular shit going through the mouth and rainbow shit going down the butt?
Please someone make that toy so my mind can rest.

I think my real issue with all of these things, and part of why I almost wouldn't even want to see them posted here (though I think that this place is still such a minor corner the effect if any is negligible), is that these 'artists' are undoubtedly the same type of people who thing they are being somehow so counter-culture and 'edgy', and that these toys are somehow artistic for the confrontation and reaction they provoke. And I would argue it is anything but that. This provokes nothing original or imaginative. Kind of like how wearing appropriating Nazi themes in your clothing accessories is totally punk. They are just screaming for attention, without any justification or merit. My base instinct is to ignore them, and the silence probably hurts their ego more than anything. Hence giving them the least attention possible is probably just what these toys deserve. We're really getting to a stage where it is so far into the comically sad and disdain over their existence, that the ongoing and massive output of these toys feels like it is teetering on the brink.

But yeah, if that is your thing and you are truly enjoying it for what it is, and not some other ancillary notion, then by all means, go nuts. There is no shortage of 'pieces' for you to enjoy.

@ultrakaiju I doubt that. We re curating the fugliest of the fugliest here. All exceptions are instantly being discussed, defended, nuanced etc. I can’t believe that peeps who are committing those things we enjoy hurting our eyes with here can think as far as you do.
