Looking around, I seem to see or just not notice the trade in blanks, stripped and beaters to be stripped seems to have declined. Is custom paint no longer a thing unless it's your own design or a legit collab with another?
Also, toy repair; there used to be a very few people who did it as pros. Do we all just buy new editions now?
Third; is there any way to get broken wires out of bendy toys and put new ones in?
Finally, am I missing it and there is already a perfectly good thread somewhere that I have missed? If so, sorry in advance.

As someone who painted a lot of toys once upon a time, people seem much less interested in buying custom painted toys than say 10 years ago. It might be because I’m not hustling enough or advertising… but I rarely strip a toy to paint these days, unless it for myself. Plus in a hobby that was always expensive, prices for this stuff now is bonkers. It was one thing to buy a toy for $20 or $50 and paint it, But now when new toys or blanks can cost hundreds from the maker… eh, it’s not worth the risk. Plus everyone and their mother can get an airbrush and paint now and be a customizer. It used to be quite the barrier for entry, so you only had a few dedicated people doing it. Now there’s no shortage of people painting. Some good, some not so good. And there’s so many avenues to display your customs, and sadly, skullbrain isn’t high in that list if you want exposure. Also, I won’t strip older painted toys anymore unless they are beaters. A lot of my favorite stuff is coming up on 20 years old and a lot just isn’t being made anymore, so I try to limit how many I personally take out of circulation. Plus there’s only like 6 people left in the world interested in a Hellopike custom skullbrain these days.

You’re probably not following the right tattoo artist accounts on IG.

Hellopike is right, there’s just a lot more complexity to the hobby and way more folk after toys for display than to customize.

actually, the last two custom paints I bought have been from him and I can’t recall when that was. Lol.

that said, the fb groups seem to have enough interest to find what you’re looking for (just be warned it is the fb cesspool and you are dealing with toy nerds, so thread lightly).

the need to strip toys is void when many failed toymakers are sitting on unsold stock, and "customizers" clamor to collaborate and paint their own runs.

I think that there is a bit of a discrepancy in your statement though- the failed toy maker is just that- a failed toy maker. Those toy sit unsold because they’re not good. Not every idea someone has for a toy should be made, but these days it’s a race to get a toy made and be an artiste. And just like every toy idea shouldn’t get made, not everyone who wants to paint toys for sale should. It’s more a question of being honest with yourself about your vision, talent and ability.

As for customizers clamoring for collaboration: I was that person years ago, begging to paint runs. Sometimes I would be allowed to do it, sometimes not; but I realize with hindsight I was probably bothersome and a bit of an annoyance to some makers; and I’m sorry for that. But those days are over for me. I’m done asking/begging to paint toys for people. I don’t care enough anymore. I still like painting toys, but not like I used to. I’d rather be a collector than a painter these days. If someone would like me to paint they can approach me, otherwise I’ll assume they’ve got their situation figured out and don’t need me. And if I get an idea for a fun paint job, and I’ve got a cheap beater or blank I’ll strip and paint it because I wanted to realize my idea.

i should have purple texted my post- i just mean to over simplify and say that i think there are far more blank toys readily available these days as opposed to the early days.

I just finally started painting in December and have maybe got 10 days in total so far. A lot easier to buy paint, especially with Vinyl Wonder in the US now too (just bought a nice amount from them to try). There are also cheap blanks available all the time now too so no need to strip anything on my end. I am in no way painting to sell yet (maybe just trading or gifting if someone really wants something), it’s really more for my own enjoyment and I have to have the right motivation and idea to be able to paint for hours. Also, Florida is horribly humid and has been raining daily lately :?
