This has been a tough week, and it is early days. Sad to hear that Joe Flaherty has also passed, after a brief, serious illness. So many incredible roles - and characters - but for me he will always be a pivotal part of that wonderful and countlessly influential cast. I am sure his many performances were the source of immeasurable inspiration for generations of future comics that followed. While he might never have garnered the blockbuster status or name recognition in the homes of US/American audiences like some of his fellow cast members, it was not because he did not earn it. Pitch perfect comedic timing and delivery. Beyond SCTV He went on to other great shows like Maniac Mansion, Really Weird Tales, and Freaks and Geeks. And, as a brilliant character actor, he had no shortage of minor parts in many other television shows and films, in his career spanning five decades. [ He will be missed. I really liked this comment I read by comedian Stewart Reynolds,
Oh man, this is so sad. His Count Floyd lives rent free in my head. Many pleasurable hours spent watching his brilliance, along with his amazing cast mates on SCTV. RIP
He was great in sctv but I really looked to him as my own dad stand-in on freaks and geeks. He was a good role model, man
I was just the right age for Happy Gilmore. "You will not "X", you jackass!" and "Red Lobster? My treat!" Are both things my friends and I use to this day. Those will hit a bit differently now.
