Actually, you can't - depending on the work of art. In Europe, the concept is referred to as artists' moral rights - and the rationale is that great works or art belong to all mankind so "owners" only hold them temporarily, in trust, for future generations to enjoy. In the US of A, it's part of the copyright act, known as VARA for Visual Artists Rights Act, and it prohibits the destruction of "important" works of art. The Gargamel piece doesn't qualify - although in my opinion, I'd rather have it than Guernica - but the rationale for VARA is the same one being expressed here - some stuff shouldn't be wrecked even if you paid for it.
This is a newer concept in US law though, as is a lot of your freedoms being taken away as the copyright office bows down to content providers and crazy senators.... making our copyright law more like EU than the original concept of what US copyright was meant to do.. encourage the arts and sciences for the good of all
I figured I would distribute the .5 amongst the "little people"... you know, to make sure I don't lose touch with community and the other riff raff.
Dear stealthtank, I really didn't want to attack you personally. Still now I think the zags belongs to the display they were made for but that didn't gave me the right to to call you a Bozo. Sorry hen
Hey there stealthtank, I'm curious which business you're in. I'm guessing 8 years ago would put you in the Internet businesses that made it through the crunch.
hey multimillionaire, why not just give the thing away or sell it here cheap to a boardmember you know will worship it? that would be pretty fucking RFSO.
